2019-20 2nd Semester Swim Make-Ups for this week
We will be having two swim make-ups this week. Both will take place on Wednesday, March 11th. The first one will be in the morning at 6:30 a.m. and the second will be after school at 2:30 p.m. Students need to be prepared to swim at 6:30 a.m. and/or 2:30 p.m., so getting to the locker room 5 to 10 minutes early will be necessary. Hope to see you there.
Schools Open During Election Primary

March 3, 2020
Greetings,
With the March 10th primary election just around the corner, I thought it might be helpful to share a few thoughts regarding the safety and security of our schools.
Changes in the Wayne County common calendar, and our obligation to follow that calendar, have resulted in November elections becoming a Professional Development (PD) day for all school districts and perhaps adding another PD day every four years in March might be part of a future conversation. For now, our district, along with just over half of the other districts in Wayne County, will be open on March 10th just as we were during the 2016 primary election.
For those schools where voting will occur, there will be a bit of change in the daily routine. Principals and engineers have plans in place that will ensure a minimal amount of disruption but it will require a little patience from all of us.
As for the safety and security of schools, please know that myself and others have been in touch with the City Clerk’s office and Dearborn Police. Our City Clerk is a long time supporter of the Dearborn Public Schools and he too understands the balance between running a smooth election and keeping schools safe. His office is estimating about 12,000 to 15,000 people voting at about 50 different precincts scattered throughout the city. That works out to an average of 300 people stopping by each voting location (actual numbers will vary by location but some polling locations may have fewer voters due to changes in absentee voting laws that have made the process easier and accessible to a larger number of voters). As with most elections, the busiest times will occur in the morning between 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. and then again between 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
From the beginning to the end of election day, communication and organization is key to keeping everyone safe. I have communicated with principals, engineers, and all other staff members providing them with guidance and suggestions to ensure a secure school environment. Of course, we have our outstanding Dearborn Police School Resource Officers who, as always, will be in our schools on election day. We have a great partnership with the Dearborn Police and they will once again be making an extra effort on election day to visit schools not just once, but frequently throughout the day in a program they call “Safe and Fair Elections.”
Our schools are part of the neighborhood and fortunately the people coming in to vote are the friends, neighbors, and parents of the students we see everyday. As a school community we need to take pride in the role we have to support a free and fair election process. At the same time we must balance that with the very real concern for the overall safety of the staff and students in our schools. By all of us doing our part to work together, communicate, remain vigilant, and follow a few simple precautions, our schools will remain safe, not only on election day, but every day.
2019-20 – 2nd Semester Swim Unit
Our 2nd semester swim unit will be ending this Friday, February 14th. The 15 minute swim test will take place on this final day of the unit.
Cell Phones During Final Exams
Parents,
We recognize that cell/smart phones are a regular part of yours and your children’s lives. In order to maintain the security of our testing sessions, as well as to reduce distractions for others, we are asking you to discourage your child from bringing their phones with them to school during our final exams this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Should your student absolutely need to bring their phone, please encourage them to have it turned off and stored in their lockers. If their phone comes into the classroom, students will be directed to turn them off and turn them in to their teacher during the testing session; at the end of the testing session, they will receive them back.
Any student who has a phone out during an active testing session may receive disciplinary action in accordance with our student code of conduct, possibly resulting in an out of school suspension, as well as possible invalidation of that exam.
We recognize this may be an inconvenience, but feel confident that this will better support a more secure and focused testing atmosphere. As a reminder, Dearborn High School is NOT responsible for lost or stolen cell phones or electronic devices.
Letter from the Principal -Week 12

Week 12
Hello Parents,
There are only 5 days left and we need 200 more parents to let us know how we are doing by answering a few questions on our Parent Survey. Please spend a few minutes today!
Congrats to the whole crew that put on our play last week, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” I love watching our kids realize their talents in such an awesome way! Way to go Girls Volleyball on winning the district championship. They play in the regional semi’s against Churchill this Tuesday at DHS, 7 pm, they’d love your support.
Next week Dearborn High is participating in the “Battle Against Hunger.” The Battle Against Hunger is an annual collective effort between Dearborn High School, Fordson High School, and Edsel Ford High School. All canned goods collected will be donated to Zaman International to stock their warehouse and all funds collected will be donated to the Amity Foundation. The Kick-Off Event for the Battle is this Sunday; we’ve included a couple flyers that give more information.
As a reminder, this Friday is the end of our 2nd Card-Marking. Please make sure to encourage your students to get all of their assignments turned in by Friday and to do their best on any end of card marking tests.
Thanks
Mr. Martin
