Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Read the rest of this entry »

CARE TO THE CORE

CARE TO THE CORE!
Next Thursday, November 3rd is the date of our big Response to Bullying event renamed Care to the CORE.  The change in the title highlights the  long history of Character Education in our District going back 25 years to 1991.
The event starts at 6 pm and runs about 90 minutes.  It is entertaining and more importantly delivers a powerful message to our community that the Dearborn Public Schools is committed to using a variety of programs and tools to enhance the culture and climate within our schools.
Click the link below to the event flyer!
Hope to see you there!

Whitmore Bolles Mentoring Program

Hello!

The mentoring program will be returning this year at Whitmore Bolles.  The Whitmore-Bolles Elementary School Mentoring Program is a program aimed at developing a learning, sharing, and helping relationship between a student and an University of Michigan-Dearborn student volunteer.  Mentors will be students from the University of Michigan-Dearborn student group, Mentors for a Brighter Day.  The adult mentors serve as positive role models who offer the student guidance and support in growing socially, emotionally, and academically.  Mentors will meet with their student mentees on a monthly basis during the designated lunch time in order to have special one on one time to do an activity, work on an academic task, or simply talk and have lunch together.
It is our hope that the returning mentors will be able to still be paired with some of their same students as last year.  However, there are no guarantees and new matches may need to be made.

If you would like your child or student to be involved in the mentoring program, please email me directly and I would be happy to pass along a permission slip in order for your child to be involved in the program.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Student Broadcast

Hello, All!

The Leadership Environment Action Team is undertaking a revamp of student broadcast this year. The action team is requesting parent volunteers to contribute to their team.  They are especially in need of tech savvy family members to help out. If parents work during school hours, they can still contribute in a consult role.

Thank you!

WELCOME BACK!

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone is having a smooth transition to the 2016-2017 school year. I would like to offer my social work services and support to any families or students that may need my help as we begin a new school year.  Please free to email me directly at johnstk@dearbornschools.org or call 313-827-7292.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for families and parents throughout the school year, including Blessings in a Backpack!

Blessings in a Backpack provides food for elementary school children across America who may otherwise have little or no food to eat on the weekends during the school year.  Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. There are currently five Dearborn Public elementary schools participating in this program – including Whitmore-Bolles Elementary.

The program could not be successful without the help of volunteers. One great way to volunteer is to help us pack the backpacks! Below are the dates that we need families to volunteer in order to pack the bags after school.  All packing occurs at 4:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, located at Cherry Hill and Military.

Thursday, September 29th

Thursday, October 27th

Wednesday, November 9th

Thursday, December 15th

Thursday, January 19th

Thursday, February 16th

Thursday, March 16th

Thursday, April 20th

Thursday, May 4th
Packing the bags is a quick, easy activity and a great way to give back to your community.  If interested, please email me directly and I will add you to our volunteer list.  Thank you, in advance, for all your help and support with this project!
Have a great evening,
Ms. Johnston
