Stay in place day 2 Social distancing day 10? Who knows. No matter how long you have been social distancing or staying inside or not working I hope you are doing well. I’m sure you guys enjoyed no new work yesterday!

Forensics Students- Good news the sun is out and the new work for today involves you heading outside. It looks like there are three assignments but there really is only one, the first link is just to download the directions and background information, print this if possible, if not you will want to keep it handy when completing the post lab questions. The next two links are just a place to upload your data, and then post lab questions. The directions sheet will talk you through going outside and measuring the wheel base, track width, and tire width of a car. Please use either your own car or a relative’s vehicle. Use caution, it would be best to be working in a driveway or garage if possible. You will need a tape measure or some sort of measuring device. If you do not have a tape measure but do have a ruler or yard stick you could use string to make the measurements and then hold it up to the ruler. You may need to enlist the help of a family member. If you are struggling with how to make the measurements with the materials you have please let me know and we will work together. Remember my office hours are 10-1. Once you have completed your data table, either by printing it out and filling it in, or by creating your own, take a picture of it and upload it under tire track lab part A, then complete the post lab questions under part B. We will not be posting a new assignment tomorrow, But Friday at 9 am we will post your last one for this week. Please make sure your tire track notes/CWP, this lab, and Friday’s assignment (Forensic Files) are all completed by Friday at 11:59 pm.

Chemistry Students- You should still be working on your project, you need to upload your graphic organizer/planning page today by 11:59 pm. I also posted a forum today, it has a short video about how soap breaks apart the COVID-19 virus. Please watch the video and respond to the forum by Friday at 11:59 pm. I am then asking you to reply to classmate’s posts by Sunday at 11:59 pm. In addition to the forum and project planning you should continue your work on the household chemical inventory. Since its so nice out today maybe you could look for somethings out in the shed or garage. Let me know if you have any questions!

I hope that all of you are staying safe and healthy. Please continue to follow the Governor’s orders of staying home unless you are an essential employee, gathering essential materials, or are outside getting some sun on this gorgeous day! Thank you all of you who have been responding to my daily questions and check ins.

Welcome to Week 2

Good morning! I just sent out an email to all my chemistry and forensics students, so please check your school email if you haven’t already. I will be posting grades on mistar today but will be checking them as ungraded for now. This week I will be posting assignments just like last week, all assignments will be due Friday at 11:59 pm, with the exception of the chemistry project planning page which is due Wednesday. Please be aware that this situation is still fluid and changing rapidly. I will let you know of any updates as soon as I know.

Today is the LAST day to pick up chrome books from school. DHS will be open for chrome book pick up from 1-3. Remember that we aren’t sure how long we will be home, or how virtual learning will change over the next few weeks, it is important that you go get a chrome book if you do not have a reliable device to use at home.

I know how stressful and scary all this has been, keep in mind your number one job with all this is to take care of yourself! If you need anything at all feel free to reach out to me, or our wonderful social work staff, just because we are not in school does not mean that your resources are gone. We are all still working. If you are looking for some destress options please read the following documents: Dealing with stress and anxiety Relaxation Techniques

Week One

We have made it to the end of week one of our remote learning. You guys have been doing such an amazing job, thank you so much for staying with it and working together to work out the issues. I have submitted a lot of names to administration for students who have not made contact with me yet, this morning I will be updating that as I know some of you have submitted work since. Please continue to reach out to your peers to check in on them and see if they need any assistance. Tonight marks the first due date. FORENSICS Students: by tonight at 11:59 pm I am looking for you to have the footprint ID lab, both forensic files, and the footprints differences assignments turned in. We will begin posting work for next week starting at 9:00 am Monday, we will follow the same procedure as this week, we will post an assignment each day with all of them being due Friday. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help out, or if you have any suggestions or input. CHEMISTRY students: you must have brain stretch, and mole practice done today. Along with uploading your worksheets from last week if you still haven’t, and please submit your project proposal. As promised I will not be adding another assignment today.

Everyone please take a minute to walk outside and enjoy fresh air for a bit! It is crazy windy outside today but its really warm, and supposed to be cold later on. I hope you are all doing well and making the best of all this. Remember to try and stay positive! Make good choices.

Thursday Check-Ins

Good morning! I am sorry I didn’t post anything yesterday, I sat down for my office hours and got caught up chatting with you all, responding to emails, and posting assignments! First of all I want to start this morning by saying thank you for all the kind words and check ins I have received from many of you. I hope that you are all doing well, or as good as we can be all things considered. During my office hours I wanted to let you know that I am happy to just chat as well as help with coursework. I know I personally am missing communication with people other than my dog! Although speaking of Andie she has really been enjoying this time, she is living the doggie dream, taking lots of walks and hanging out with her people.

Okay so what should YOU be doing? Aside from staying home, and staying well that is! Well first things first Forensics Students: There are now three assignments for you to complete by Friday at midnight. Crime Scene Footprint Matching, Forensic Files Sole Searching, and Footprint Differences. We will be adding one more tomorrow. Please let us know if you have any questions as to what the expectations are. Chemistry Kiddos you are up next: Your capstone project is posted. The proposal is due by Friday at 11:59 pm. All I need for the proposal is what product you plan on researching. Please make sure that you also complete the brain stretch, as well as the assignment I post today (this will be due Friday night as well, I will not be posting anything new tomorrow). If you were not able to upload your worksheets from last week, or you didn’t complete the start up quiz please do so today as well.

All students all classes: As of right now I will be grading and providing feedback for all assignments you turn in on mistar but the assignments will be marked not graded. Administration has asked us not to let any assignments count towards your overall grade…..for now. I will be grading anything that is submitted, and providing feedback. You will be able to see your grade on each assignment, it will just not count towards your overall grade as of right now. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

One last thing I need a favor from you, please, please reach out to your fellow classmates and make sure they are accessing all the course materials, if you know of someone who doesn’t have reliable access to resources please contact me. If you or any of your classmates are in need of any resources remember you can reach out to me, or our wonderful social work staff. Together we will all get through this!

Staycation and Virtual Learning

I know that many of you are eagerly awaiting your assignments, or some information as to how the next three weeks will look. I would like to start off by letting you know that this is a learning experience for ALL of us! Students, teachers, and administrators alike. Friday we had some time to sit down and plan out what we wanted to accomplish over the next three weeks, but obviously no one was planning on this, therefore it is something that will be changing and taking form as we go. You have undoubtedly heard the word ‘fluid’ quite a lot in the last few weeks and are likely sick of the term, but the fact of the matter is this indeed is an ever changing a fluid situation. (my chemistry rockstars will remember that fluid means particles that can easily slide past one another and take the shape of its container, so in relating that to this situation think we need to act like a fluid and be ready to fit into this new situation) The reason we are all using this term fluid is because we know that things are changing, rapidly. Because of that it is imperative that you are checking your school email, and all of your teacher’s iBlogs daily. I would suggest subscribing to each iBlog for all of your teachers now if you have not already done so.

Later today you will be receiving an email from me to your school email. I will explain how to join my iLearn site if you are not already a member, I will also be attaching my remind log in information. My plan is to update you daily with an iBlog post, and a message from either remind or mass email. The expectation is that you continue to learn throughout the next three weeks. Remember that this is not a break, we have April 6-10th for that. This closure is out of necessity to encourage social distancing, and avoid further spreading of this outbreak. My suggestion over the next three weeks is to create a schedule for yourself. Set an alarm Monday-Friday (it doesn’t have to be as early as it would for a regular school day but maintaining a routine is important!) There are a lot of sample schedules floating around on social media, it might seem silly but I highly encourage it. It will help you stay up with school work, maintain a routine, and keep you from going stir crazy. Some things I encourage you to include in your schedule is a set block of time in which you will be dedicated to doing your classwork, time for screen free activities, some sort of physical activity time, and possibly some time to do some educational activities that are not part of your required school work (did you know that there are lots of museums offering free digital tours?)

Again I will be updating my iBlog daily, as well as communicating with all students via remind and email. If you are not signed up for my remind and would like to be the sign up information is below. All students of mine are required to sign up if they have not already done so. I also welcome parents and guardians to sign up if they would like to be included in reminders I will be sending. To sign up for remind please either download the free app or text 81010 for first hour forensics the code is @forenscij1 for second hour forensics the code is @johnsonfs2 for third hour forensics the code is @johnsonfs3 for fifth hour chemistry the code is @jchem5 for sixth hour chemistry the code is @jchem6 I will be checking my email and remind regularly as always. My official office hours will be between 10 am and 1 pm Monday-Friday. This means if you message me within that time period expect to get a prompt response, if you message me outside of that time period I will get back to you when I am able. Stay safe and healthy!

Teacher of the Year

Do you have a favorite teacher who has really impacted you in a big way? It doesn’t have to be a teacher you have right now. But think, think about a teacher who helped shape who you are. I am sure that you have at least one. Did you know that more than likely that teacher has NO idea how much he or she means to you? I love teaching, heck almost every teacher I know absolutely loves what we do, but it can often be a thank-less career. It is so hard to know if we are truly making a difference. Did you know that you can help your teachers hear how wonderful you think they are?? In the city of Dearborn we have a teacher of the year award ceremony every year! And it’s super easy to nominate your teachers! Click here to nominate (its super quick and easy!) And it’s true what they say it really is an honor simply to be nominated!

Updates

As a reminder I may not be posting regularly as a blog post but my calendar, found at the bottom of this page is updated DAILY. Each day you will find a brief description of what was done in class, as well as what was turned in. Make sure to check it when you (or your child) are out of school, on a field trip, forgot what the homework was, or you are gathering your packet in preparation to turn it in Monday mornings. I have lots of students who are still taking a LOT of time to get the weekly packets together. I do my best to make sure the list of what is to be turned in weekly is readily available, both on the student center white board in my classroom, as well as on the cover page distributed mondays, and of course the online calendar. As I have mentioned in class it would be very helpful to put the date on your papers each day, and then keep your weekly work in one place (either a section of your binder or the front pocket of your binder) this way on Mondays you simply need to take the papers and place them in order. I would really appreciate this, so we don’t lose our class time! I only get to see you 58 minutes a day, and in order for you to be successful I need all 58!
