February Check in

Hey everyone! Greetings from the wonderful world of science. This has been such a strange first month of school, despite the fact that this is our 5th week of second semester we have only seen one another a few days! Be aware that as you are checking your grades (or your child’s grades) you are not looking at a full reflection of what you have been up to. First of all we have only had one quiz, one lab (or two depending on which hour you are in), and one test. Also I am always at least ONE week behind in terms of grading since everything you do week one is turned in Monday or week two and so forth. Please continue to check the calendar at the bottom of this page daily for what we are doing on a daily basis, and to keep updated on upcoming test/quizzes!

Happenings in the world of chemistry

Its December already how did that happen??

In both honors and regular we are working on the periodic table and electrons. There will be a unit test in both classes over atoms, periodic table, and electrons soon. (Ch 4-6)

For Honors chem this test will be December 11th and for Regular Chem it will be December 7th.

Last week we did a flame test lab below see the link for the unknowns if you were out!

Never trust an atom they make up everything!

We have been busy budding chemists in Mrs. J’s chemistry class! We are currently beginning our third unit in which we will be studying atoms, electrons, and the periodic table. As I tell my students the first half a semester is adding the ‘tools’ to our ‘chemistry toolbox’ these are the last tools we will be adding. It is finally starting to feel more like chemistry around here! Students were asked to create a timeline of the history of the atom. This week we will be exploring just how tiny an atom is and then what an isotope is. We had some repairs to our chem lab the last week and a half or so, so its been a while since we have been able to go into the chem lab in order to do labs so we are excited to get back in there this week! Twice!

As always I encourage students to be completing all classwork/homework daily and then spending an additional 5-10 minutes reviewing it. Those extra few minutes are the difference maker in your success! Remember what we have been talking about TAKE PRIDE in your work. DRIVE is key, if you put in the effort success will follow.

Card marking one is a wrap!

I can’t believe how fast the school year is progressing! We are starting our 8th week of school tomorrow. We are currently studying matter in both honors and regular chemistry. Please make sure you are keeping up with your work! Remember that all lab work is summative.

Despite the outcome of the game I am so proud of our football players, and their performance against Fordson. It was cool and rainy but they played hard, and there were lots of dedicated fans! I was honored to be chosen by one of my chemistry students, Ali Kleit to wear his jersey for teachers appreciation. Thanks Ali!

I am looking forward to meeting many of your parents this week at conferences. It will be a time to discuss progress in class, and look forward to the rest of the semester. Conferences will be Monday 4-7 and Wednesday 4-7.

Have a great week!!!!

Skittles Fun

Check out some first hour students experimenting with skittles in order to determine if they are actually flavored the way we are lead to believe, or if the candy companies are tricking us. Science is all about discovery!

Calendar is readable! And weekly updates

So after a long time of messing with this iBlog business I have figured out a way for you guys to see the calendar a lot better (I hope). I have it set so it is at the bottom of the main screen! Please let me know if this works better. Remember I will daily post all classwork and homework all classes did!

Last week updates- Last week was a busy week of getting used to the new school year (and a new school for me!) We went over and established norms we will utilize all year, went over class and lab expectations, and began to look at lab equipment and experimental design!

Things to look forward to this coming week:

We will be looking at what it is to think like a scientist. We will continue to think about how to answer essential questions. I will again be asking you to get in groups and work together to interpret data and come up with solutions. Honors classes will have a quiz over equipment on wednesday, general chem will have a quiz over syllabus/lab equipment Friday.
