Dearborn Teachers Reading Academy (DTRA) – Dates posted on the district PD Registration site – DTRA provides participants in grades K-8 with extensive knowledge and research based practice in the components of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. These components are explored within the Daily 5/CAFE framework and include a focus on using assessments, brain research and lesson planning to strengthen reading instruction and increase student achievement. Modeling of mini lessons and strategy instruction uses a Reading Workshop model.
Struggling Readers – Dates posted on the district PD Registration site – Struggling Readers is a two day course that will review the five essential components of reading and focus on interventions that will benefit struggling readers. It will focus participants on research-based intervention strategies for at-risk learners. Teachers will review assessments and intervention strategies that will accelerate the performance of struggling readers. Teachers will collaborate to plan differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students through the application of powerful strategies that will improve student reading performance. A prerequisite for the course is proficiency with DRA and Running Records. Plan to bring data from work with at least one below grade level reader in your classroom (assessment, writing, other work samples).
