What is the purpose of this course?

This course provides a foundational understanding of the Dearborn Writing Framework and the Writer’s Workshop Model. Emphasis is placed on research-based practices in writing instruction along with materials, methods, and skills used to teach students writing in grades K-5. Components examined include: 

  • An Overview of the Writer’s Workshop
  • Text types in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
  • Dearborn Educational Curriculum (DEC)
  • The Writing process
  • The six essential components of writing (6 Traits)
  • Using assessment to plan writing instruction
  • Conferring

To ensure that students become proficient writers, the focus of this coursework will be on the following: developing writing independence, differentiation of instruction,moving from assessment to instruction, brief and detailed focus lessons, organizing student data and monitoring student progress during writing conferences.

Daily 5 & Cafe Online Training Course

This course provides a foundation for understanding the Daily 5 framework and CAFE. Emphasis is placed on research-based practices in literacy instruction with materials, methods, and skills used to teach students reading in grades K-6. Components examined include: classroom design to develop and facilitate a strong, safe classroom community,  metacognitive learning, brain research, motivation in teaching and learning, developing independence, organizing student data, brief and detailed focused lessons, conferring, differentiation in the literacy classroom, moving from assessment to instruction, and monitoring student progress. This course provides practitioners with the knowledge and skills to successfully implement both the Daily 5 and CAFE in their own classrooms. 

Materials needed to complete this are the Daily 5 (2206 or 2014) and CAFE (2009) books by Gail Boushey & Joan Moser and conferring notebook.

Materials needed to complete this course are:  The Classroom Management Book by Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong (2014) and a Reflection journal or notebook

NWEA Online Training Course

What is he purpose of this course?

Online self-paced course designed to deepen knowledge in NWEA by increasing teachers understanding and ability in the following: 

  •       Deepen understanding of the basics of the MAP assessment 
  •       Develop ability to access and analyze reports 
  •       Explore how MAP assessments differ from other assessments both in purpose & in value 
  •       Explore and use MAP data can be used to inform instructional practice, differentiate instruction and implement interventions
