Free Press Article and the Education Trust Report on Teacher Evaluations: Dearborn included in Dataset.

I recently spoke to a reporter from the Detroit Free Press and she used one of my statements that was published in the front section of the Detroit Free Press on September 20th.  Here is the link to the article which is a response to a recent report by the education trust.  https://www.freep.com/article/20120920/NEWS06/309200269/-1/7daysarchives/Most-teachers-found-effective-rating-system-questioned

They used teacher evaluation data from dearborn in their report.  The report is definitely flawed as there is no link to achievement data or any other data to support their opinion other than the fact that the authors believe more teachers should be rated at an ineffective or minimally effective level.

Here is the link to the Education Trust Report. https://www.edtrust.org/sites/edtrust.org/files/publications/files/Strengthening%20Michigan%27s%20Teaching%20Force_0.pdf

Teacher Evaluation Committee Meeting September 18th and Evaluation Timeline.

Listed below are the general notes from the September 18th, teacher evaluation committee meeting.  Members present include Chris Sipperley, Hassane Jaafar, Julie Maconochie, Steve Saleh, Fatme Faraj, Jill Chochol, Shannon Peterson, and Glenn Maleyko

  • We first went over Stages and the online system. As previously mentioned in a blog post we will pilot this software in 6 schools. The launch will occur soon.
  •  We talked about timelines and credibility. Making sure that things are done effectively.
  • Teachers can be evaluated on all standards and elements.
  • Talked about Student Data and how that will look moving forward. We are not confident based on what we are hearing from the pilot districts. We are waiting for the state to provide direction.

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE

  • The Timeline will be posted on the blog. Please scroll Down.
  • A self evaluation must be completed by teachers and brought to the goal meeting (this is will not be part of the personnel file but it should be shared with the administrator).
  • It is recommended that teachers  keep a notebook with the standards and throw evidence in the book. Ex. Similar to the plan I portfolios.
  • We discussed whether or not a pre-conference form is needed for Plan II teachers. At this time we do not have one but teachers can request a conference.
  • Moving forward we want a combination of scheduled observations and those that are surprise observations. We also want to implement routine walkthroughs for evaluations.
  • We discussed the student data piece and that we are waiting on direction from the state. Stages allows for a weighting system that we will look at although we will not officially use it this year.  We will just analyze the data. We discussed a specific rating system, we have left it open for flexibility. Next year we will have to move to a more specified system.
  • Teachers should be aware of the building initiatives and should have goals aligned with building and district initiatives while allowing for individual flexibility
  • Teachers may be evaluated on all standards and elements during the year even if they are not reflected in the teacher goals.
  • After the 1st year we have all learned a lot and things will get better with the timeline and with moving forward. We all want effective and fair evaluation

HR Technology for Files and Evaluations

We have worked hard all summer in order to prepare to pilot a new software program for teacher evaluations. The software will provide for a more effective and efficient way to implement teacher evaluations and it is totally web based and secure.  We are using our own evaluation document but will use the software to support implementation.  The six schools that will pilot the Stages software for the 2012-13 school year include. Fordson, Duvall, Miller, Stout, Bryant and Maples. We hope to bring the entire district over to an electronic system in the 2013-14 school year. In addition Mr. Troy Patterson has created a pilot with ilearn and we are looking to implement that software in at least 2 schools.

We also plan to convert all HR files to an electronic system. We are using CEO software and hope to have this conversion completed within a year.

Dear ELL Staff and District ELL contacts:

We have successfully enrolled 49 APPLES applicants from across Wayne County into the Madonna teacher certification and ELL endorsement programs. We have 11 remaining openings for para-professionals that work in a classroom with ELL students that do not already have a teaching certificate.

If your district has a para pro that meets this definition, pls give them the attached application and encourage them to apply.

The deadline is Thursday, September 27th, 2012 @ 3pm. Only fully completed and timely submitted applications with supporting documents will be reviewed.

Your assistance in helping us meet this goal is appreciated.

Michigan Teacher Evaluation Pilot

Greetings Everyone,

Dearborn had applied for the Pilot on Teacher Evaluations that is being run by the state. We were initially accepted but decided to decline because we were unable to use the Danielson Model which is aligned with our current system. However, the state was gracious thankful that we had initially applied. Even though we are not going to be involved in the pilot.  I wanted to pass on the information regarding the pilot.  Click on the following link. Michigan districts to try out national model
