January 24, 2020 Update

Almost all students have completed their NWEA testing in Reading. If you haven’t, please come during Advisory or lunch.

H.W. finish the Greek Root Words wk.sheet for Monday if you weren’t able to finish it in class. All hours, except for 3rd, should have been able to pick up a novel from the library because of a meeting that was taking place in there. I will make sure to schedule a time next week for us to go. Make sure you continue to read at home on a nightly basis.

Have a great weekend!

January 21, 2020

Welcome to Second Semester!

We will continue with NWEA tomorrow and possibly, on Wednesday. Those not done will have to come in during Advisory or lunch to finish up.

Note that IXL for NN and PP were entered. Those who didn’t finish on time will get partial credit. Students submitting for late credit must approach me and show me their scores. Not a great start for some students!

Students who didn’t print their essays or finish up the final touches will be given that opportunity. Thanks for those of you who have made every effort before school and during advisory to finish those up and submit. Note: These can only be finished and printed in class.

Next unit is Mythology – I am looking forward to this unit!!!

We will start our focus on Greek and Roman root words as we study Mythology. Students will have a quiz every Friday on root words until we complete our unit.

January 14, 2020 Update

We will be moving into NWEA-Reading tomorrow and plan to continue through this week and part of next week.

Please note that all late work must be submitted by no later than Thursday.

IXL NN & PP are due by Sunday night.

Note that many students have yet to finish A,B,C,D on IXL

January 13 – January 14, 2020

We will continue to work on the in class writing assignment today and tomorrow. It took longer than expected.

Once done, students will print at school and submit. Note – students cannot work on this at home.

I am doing notebook/binder checks this week – students can visit the December 13 blog for topics covered.

IXL scores were noted this morning – some students earned a 0. These were due last night and students were given a week to complete. On a weekly, bi-weekly basis IXL will be assigned and should be completed on time.

We will begin NWEA Reading this week and will continue through part of next week.

H.W. IXL : NN & PP (all skills)

Continue to read your novel on a nightly basis

January 8, 2020 – January 10, 2020

Welcome back to school and a happy new year for all. I hope you all enjoyed your time with your families.

We have spent the passed few days focusing again on the process of writing and on the concept of static/dynamic characters. Today, tomorrow, and Friday, students will be going through the process of writing on their own in class. They are allowed to only work on the brainstorming, graphic organizer, and drafting in class and not at home. I need to know what they are each capable of accomplishing at this point, after several cycles of lessons on writing, on their own.

H.W. IXL (A,B,C,D – all skills) due Sunday night, Quiz over #13-24 of “A Christmas Carol” vocabulary on Friday

Note that binder and notebook check will happen this week and next week. Students should be ready for this check as I will randomly call up students. Students may check the post from Dec 2019 that has the topics for SSR and bell work.

December 17, 2019 Update

We finished up our stations today. Students should have the 7 activities completed to submit upon entering the class tomorrow. Tomorrow is also the assessment for “A Christmas Carol”. Students may use their station packet to review important and key ideas (themes, Spirits of Past, Present, Future, symbols, allusions, characters, etc.). The reading can be accessed by searching: A Christmas Carol by Fred Gaines PDF. The audio can be accessed by searching: A Christmas Carol by Fred Gaine audio.

Students should be reviewing their grades. Late work will not be accepted later than Thursday. Some students did not complete their IXL (Y 1-7).

December 16, 2019 Update

To access the play, search A Christmas Carol by Fred Gaines pdf – it is the first search result.

Started our Station Work for “A Christmas Carol” which requires students to rotate from one station to another and focus on different elements of the novel. Whatever was not completed in class, from the 4 stations we visited, must be done for homework. Tomorrow, we will visit the last 3 stations and do a quick review over for the assessment. Note that by Wednesday, you will have 7 worksheets completed to submit at the beginning of the hour. Take note of each concept as they relate to what you will be assessed on, but the assessment is not limited to just those concepts.

FYI: Assessment over “A Christmas Carol” is on Wednesday. You need to know the elements of Drama, the setting of the story, the societal issues taking place during the time period, why Dickens wrote the play, the characters, the themes, symbols, allusion, the events and their meaning for Scrooge, the development of the main character and what he sees and learns from each spirit , etc. The assessment will be made up of 25+ questions on ilearn.

H.W. IXL due tonight, finish up the station work that you didn’t finish in class, Metacognitive table will still be collected tomorrow

December 13, 2019 Update

We completed the reading of “A Christmas Carol” today. Students took their Vocabulary quiz over terms 1-12 on ilearn and turned in their worksheet for scenes 1-4. They continued to work through their metacognitive table which is due on Monday.

H.W. IXL Skill Y (1-7) – must earn 80 or above, make sure you place @bryantmiddle after your username or it will not work

Finish metacognitive table to turn in on Monday

If you have missed any part of the play, you must read it – simply look up A Christmas Carol by Fred Gaines PDF for the reading. You may try looking up the audio to see if it is available. You have a quiz over the play on Wednesday and must be prepared.

Notebook check will take place either next week or the week we return. Below are all the topics that I will check for both reflections and bell work:

SSR & Reflection #13:  How can reading change you as a learner?  How can it help you as a member of society?

SSR & Reflection #14:  Summarize what you have read thus far in your novel.

SSR & Reflection #15:  Complete a plot diagram for your story

SSR & Reflection #16:  Continue working on the plot diagram #15, and for #16 write a 4-6 line rhyming poem about your novel.

SSR & Reflection #17:  Read for 10 minutes and then draw out a character from your text.  Identify who it is and label the characteristics that are unique to that character.

SSR & Reflection #18:  Write a letter to the author about your thoughts on the novel.  Make sure you elaborate by providing insight and possibly asking questions.  You should have at least 7 sentences.  Start with Dear author’s name and end with Sincerely, your name

SSR & Reflection #19: Read first.  Then provide a summary of what has happened thus far in your novel.  Make sure you indicate important events and the buildup of your characters. (12-15 sentences)

SSR & Reflection #20- Which character has changed as a result of events they have encountered in the novel?  Elaborate in your explanation.  (5-7 sentences).

SSR & Reflection #21:  Write a review about your book either promoting it or discouraging readers from picking it up to read.  Rate it from 1-5 and then discuss your reasoning.

Bell Work #6:  Explain the following-

“Vera said:

‘Why do you feel you have to turn everything into a story?’  So I told her Why:

‘Because if I tell the story, I control the version.

Because if I tell the story, I can make you laugh, and I

would rather have you laugh at me than feel sorry for me.

Because if I tell the story, it doesn’t hurt as much.

Because if I tell the story, I can get on with it.’ ”

Bell Work #7:  What does the following mean to you? “Normality is a paved road: It’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow” – Vincent van Gogh

Bell Work #8:  draw out what you remember of the format of an essay.

Bell Work #9:  What does the following by Abe Lincoln saying mean to you? “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but it you want to test a man’s character, give him power”.

Bell Work #10:  Write the quote down and then discuss what you think Leo Tolstoy was trying to say. “Freethinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges, or beliefs.  This state of mind is not common but it is essential for right thinking.”

December 12, 2019 Update

Continued reading “A Christmas Carol” Scenes IV & V and worked on the metacognitive table.

Reminder to finish up Scenes I-V metacognitive table, questions for I-IV and study for tomorrow’s vocabulary quiz. I will be collecting all the work for the play in the next few days. In addition, make sure you catch up or re-read portions of the play that you may have missed before next week’s quiz.
