September 17, 2018 update

Today, I modeled what I expect on the SAT worksheet.  We went through and covered synonyms, contributing factors, and sentences. The SAT worksheets will have to be turned in with the quiz every Friday.

We also started practicing close reading by annotating a text.  Again, I am modeling what I expect from students when annotating.  We will continue working on annotating the rest of the week.

Most hours got their literary term quizzes back.  For those who didn’t, it was just a matter of not having time in class to pass out.  You will get them tomorrow.

H.W.  continue looking over your SAT words for Friday’s quiz

Please make sure to bring in the composition notebook for tomorrow’s class.

REMINDER:  Picture Day is Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 18

September 14, 2018 Update

Happy Friday and a great weekend to all.

Today, in class, we organized our binders.  For students who didn’t have the binders and tabs, you should have written down the label for each section so that you can come to class prepared with an organized binder on Monday.  Please make sure to do so.

I shared the first SAT list of words (mimic, cajole, fabricate, refrain, and revel) with students and went over, citing examples and completing one of the sections together.  The quiz is next Friday.  Every Friday there is a quiz and a new list is distributed.  I explained the quiz format – students must know the five words and be ready to write them down on the quiz sheet and to use those words to continue the quiz where I will have 5 sentences written out and they need to choose the word that fits into each sentence.  We will continue working on this on Monday so that there is guidance here in class but students are free to complete it at home if they are comfortable doing so.  These sheets will be submitted with the quiz every Friday for my review.

We still have a few summer book talks to complete.  The goal is to have these done by Monday or Tuesday.

Reminder:  picture day is Tuesday, September 18th.

September 13 Update

Thanks for those parents who were able to make it yesterday to open house- it was very nice meeting all of you.  For parents who were unable to attend, please feel free to email me at houryf@dearbornschools.org with questions.

In class we are continuing to work through summer book talks.  I am so proud of the students as some are facing their fear of public speaking and volunteering to do their talks.  It takes courage to stand up and present in front of your peers.

Tomorrow, please bring in the required material especially the binder with tabs and the notebook so that we can organize the binder.

Reminder:  tomorrow September 14 is a half day.

September 11 Update

Students took the Literary Terms Quiz today.

Students have started with their book talks.  We will continue to present the next few days.

Reminder students:  share your schedule with your parents for Open House tomorrow.  Have them take a picture of it with their phones or write it down in their planner and give them the planner to bring along.  Let’s help parents find their way quickly around the building without delay to the class sessions.

September 7 Update

Summer Homework is due on Monday, September 10 at the beginning of the hour.

The Literary Terms Quiz is scheduled for Tuesday, September 11.  The Literary Term worksheet which we completed in class is also due for points on September 11, so make sure you have it with you.

September 6 Update

Please note that we have started the NWEA Reading assessment today.  This may take a few days to complete.

Students should be finalizing their summer reading homework to submit on Monday, September 10.  Please note the expectations and rubric was again shared with students to make sure the required material is completed.  Students will submit their work on Monday and present their book during the week.

We spent the week going over Literary Terms.  Students worked individually, in groups, and as a class to better understand the terminology we will encounter this year.  While some terms are review, some were new to the students.  THERE IS A LITERARY TERM QUIZ SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK.  DATE IS YET TO BE DETERMINED AS WE NEED TO COMPLETE THE NWEA READING PORTION FIRST.  I will notify you once I have a date.

Welcome

Hello Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 7th Grade ELA Blog.  Please note that updates will be made here throughout the week to keep you posted.  I look forward to a successful year working alongside all of you.  Please feel free to reach out if you have questions and concerns.  My email address is houryf@dearbornschools.org. Students, if you ever need my help please stop by my room before school, during lunch, or after school.

I am happy to be part of the Bryant Staff this year.  This is my first year of working in the district.  I have 15 years of experience in the education field:  13 years in West Bloomfield as a middle school and high school teacher and 2 years in Dubai as Head of Middle School English and Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.  I grew up in Dearborn and am proud of the fact that I am a product of the Dearborn Public Schools. I graduated form Fordson High School, moved on to receiving a double major in English and Psychology, a secondary education degree, and a Masters in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

As an educator, I believe that it is important to inspire kids to appreciate words and to know their power in spoken and written form.  Most importantly I think that students will value reading only when they understand its power to change us and the world around us.  In class, we will take the time to analyze text, understand what lesson it holds for all of us, and learn to better articulate in spoken and written form.

I look forward to partnering with you and hope to see you at Open House on Wednesday, September 12.
