September 11, 2019 Update

Reminder that open house is tonight starting at 6 p.m. Please make sure you bring your child’s schedule (paper copy or planner or check student connect). I look forward to meeting as many parents as possible.

This week, students created their first Cold Write essay over the reading, “Thank you, M’am”. This is a baseline from which I can then begin to plan our writing units. It gives me a clear picture of what I need to do to help your children become better writers.

We have allocated the remainder of the week to completing the Reading portion of NWEA.

Friday, September 6 Update

Summer work was collected today.

We continued working on annotating as I modeled how to annotate the short story, “Thank You, M’am”. 5th hour students, make sure you finish the rest of the reading for Monday.

Students will be writing an essay in class on Monday and Tuesday of next week. NWEA-Reading is scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

2019-2020 School Year

Welcome to a new school year! I look forward to a great year ahead.

Updates for this week:

  1. Summer assignment (SSR) is due on Friday, September 6. Please make sure to review and add more information where needed. See me if you need my input. We will schedule book talks next week.
  2. Please make sure you have your notebook, binder, highlighters, pens/pencils with you so that we can begin getting organized.
  3. We will continue to work on annotations this week as we move from Langston Hugh’s poem, a “Dream Deferred” to his short story, “Thank you M’am). I have closely modeled annotation guidelines and distributed the book mark to be used for the remainder of the school year. We will work on our first writing sample this week and through next week.
  4. NWEA-Reading is scheduled for next week.

Please feel free to email me at houryf@dearbornschools.org with questions.
