Today is Picture Day 🙂  Please send the envelope with the exact amount of money needed along with your child’s name on the envelope. Some have already ordered online if you’d like to do that, or forgot about it today.

Spelling words this week focus on the long a sound spelled ai, ay. main, sail, jay, may, stay. The Dolch words are: say, play, away, come, said

This week for our reading strategy we begin focusing on informational text. Reading for facts, headings, charts, graphs, etc. Since October is Fire Safety month, we have an article this week about fire fighters that we’ll read and gather facts from.

Writing also will then focus on informational writing and because it’s autumn/Halloween, we’ll be reading, learning, and writing about owls.

Our math this week continues with measurement using the metric system. We continue learning how to measure using centimeter units then will get into meter sticks used for measuring longer items.

Social Studies still focus’ on maps and where Dearborn is in the state of Michigan. Location words, north, south, east, west and being used.

Our science activity this week continues with properties of matter and seeing if we can build something out of paper strong enough to hold a book!

Enjoy the week 🙂

Monday October 15, 2018

Late Start this Wednesday. School begins at 9:35.

Library check out day is Thursday. If your child brought their library book home, please remind them to bring it back to school Wednesday.

Spelling words this week focus on consonant blends with s: spell, step, slide, skin, skip. The Dolch words are: help, you, came, new, best.

We’re continuing reading and learning about words that stand for sounds in books as our reading strategy this week. Also how does the use of repeated lines throughout a story help us understand the story?

This is our last week for a bit for opinion writing. Our opinion this week will be on the topic of Christoper Columbus and if we would have joined him on his journey across the ocean? We’ll be making a picture graph displaying our results. I also get lots of great opinions and thoughts on this topic 🙂 This ties in nicely with our new Social Studies unit on maps and learning about our community through map skills and using the direction words: north, south, east, west.

In math, we’ve started a new unit on measurement. We’re starting with using centimeter cubes to measure, then lead into centimeter rulers and meter sticks.

Our Science concept continues with properties of matter. This week’s property is meltability and learning that different products have different temperature points they melt at.

Halloween: We’ll be having a small party in class after the school wide parade in the afternoon. No gory or violent costumes allowed, including weapons that come with costumes. A note will be sent home closer to Halloween.

Enjoy the week!

1/2 Day this Friday Oct. 12. Dismissal is 11:45. No lunch served at school.

Spelling words this week focus on the vowel u: cut, cute, tube, cub, jump. The Dolch reading words: pull, must, just, soon, they.

Our reading strategy this week is onomatopeia–words that stand for sounds in writing. The students always seem to have fun with this and throughout the year I usually have students who find onomatopeia words in their stories.

The writing focus for this week and next continues to be opinion writing tied in with Social Studies. The topic is a fun place in Dearborn and why. We’ll also be having our first social studies test on the computer Wed. A study guide will come home today for you to help your child review what we’ve been learning.

We’re finishing up our first math module that focused on fluency and accuracy with strategies for addition and subtraction within 100. We are learning many new methods and it all will cycle around throughout the year with this new program.

Enjoy your week!

Raz Kids

Hello again,

I just signed all of the students up for a Raz Kids reading account. If they used the site before, their password is changed to their birthdate written as MMDDYYYY for example, if their birthday is Oct. 1, 2018 it would be input as 10012028. If they’ve never used the site, it has a series of books at their reading level to read. Quizes are taken at the end to pass onto the next level.

I have set each students reading level to reflect their current Fall score.

Give the site a try because the school has an account until February 2019. It may be renewed at that time.

We’ll be trying it one day in class also.

I hope your students enjoys this!

Happy Rainy Monday 🙂

I sent home a note last week about thin gloves/socks for a science project this week. Please have your child bring them to school within the next day or 2. They’ll be returned, only to be used to test for hotness/coldness of an object.

Spelling words this week focus on the “o” sound: fox, lock, pop, poke, cone, those, cold, stop, open, old.

Our reading strategy this week will focus on how the main character of a story reacts to a major event. We’re reading about a young girl who’s family moved to America from Korea. She resists learning to spell her name in English.

We’ll begin a new writing unit. Our new unit is opinion writing and support our opinion with 2-3 reasons. “Because it’s fun” or “Because I like it” will be stretched to why it’s fun or why they like the topic. The topic will be fun things to do in Dearborn/why Dearborn is a nice community, etc. A homework sheet will come about this as well.

Math will focus on continued fluency as well as numbers and operations in base ten. We’ll get into subtracting from 2 digit numbers. The parent homework helpers will come home with the homework sheets to help you understand this new program.

Science will continue to focus on the properties of matter. This week, as I said above, will focus on hot/cold properties.

We’ll also have our first library book check out on Thursday. I believe the students will be able to check out 2 books this year, based on past practice.

Enjoy the week!

Monday September 24, 2018

I hope everyone had a chance to get outside to enjoy that beautiful weather we had this weekend 🙂

Our spelling words this week focus on the vowel i: short and long sound: fix, did, fine, hike, trick, find, like, live, little, five

We’re continuing the reading strategy of asking and answering questions while reading a text. We’re using a Mr. Putter and Tabby story. If your child likes this story, many of these books can be found at the library.

Our writing this week will be a personal narrative as well as writing our learning goals for the first semester.

Math continues with fluency strategies for addition and subtraction within 100. I’ve sent home the homework explanations that go with each homework sheet. Those should help explain how things are being taught this year.

I hope you heard about the hats we made as our science activity. We’re focused on the properties of matter and which materials have which properties to help solve a problem.

We’ll be comparing different types of communities: rural (farm), suburban, urban (city) for social studies the next few weeks. We’ll be talking about how all communities are the same: they have people, businesses, building, places to have fun, houses, etc.

As a congratulations to those 6 students who turned in their summer reading logs the first week of school, Dr. Moughni will be having an ice cream party this afternoon.

Enjoy your week!

Monday September 17, 2018

Late Start Wednesday:  school begins at 9:35

We use dry erase markers for math. I have them but if your child would like to have their own, they can bring one to keep in their desk. Please make sure it’s dry erase and not a washable one.

Spelling words this week focus on e at the end changing the vowel to a long sound: cap, cape, ate, bake, back, can pick, make, black, cane.

Our reading strategy will be identifying character and setting in a week long story. The goal is for the students to take this strategy and apply it in their own reading.

We began a personal narrative (a true story about “me”). We will work on this story this week and next.

In math our focus continues to be fluency within 100. We’re learning how to make an easier problem within a larger one. For example, if they know 6+2=8, that will help them solve 26+2=28 and 86+2=88, etc.

Social Studies continues with learning about different communities. We’ll be comparing natural and human characteristics of our communities and others.

Science will begin a unit about the properties of matter. This will be a semester long unit.

Enjoy the week!
