I hope your child told you all about our wonderful day at Cranbrook 🙂 They seemed to enjoy the museum and seeing things we’ve learned about as well as, new science and history items.

Today we will have our last NWEA test–math. Students seemed to take the reading test seriously last Friday so I expect the same with this one.

No school this Friday or next Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday.

Unfortunately, I will be out this week, Tuesday-Thursday. My mother-in-law died rather unexpectedly last week so I’ll be out for the funeral this week.

Our reading strategy this week focuses on plant parts and their functions.

We’re writing our own narrative stories and I’m encouraging the students to write an imaginative version of a story.

Math will focus on measuring using inches, coin combinations and creating a bar graph.

Social Studies begins a new unit that emphasizes how communities solve problems.

All library books are due Thursday. If you have any at home, please send them in.

Next week, we’ll be doing a district encouraged STEAM activity in class. Students will need boxes (cereal, kleenex, these smaller type sized boxes), paper towel tubes, yarn/string. If you have any of this at home, can you please send it in. We’ll be doing this school wide so I’m looking forward to this 🙂

Good rainy Monday 🙂 I hope you had an enjoyable Mother’s Day.

Tomorrow is our field trip to Cranbrook. Please remember to send a lunch with your child in a bag. We have a day filled with educational, fun experiences. Please have your child here on time because the bus can’t wait if anyone is late.

Late Start Wednesday. School begins at 9:35. NWEA testing will be on Thursday morning this week. We’ll test 1 subject this week, then another next week. 

Due the schedule, no spelling words this week.

Our reading strategy continues with informational text and reading to ask and answer questions from the text.

We will write our last opinion paper the next couple of weeks based on a social studies topic about changing the environment.

Social studies and science topics become woven in with reading and writing. We’re reading about events in other communities that relate to Dearborn events regarding changing the landscape and environment. We’ll discuss the positive and negative consequences of the changes. We’ll also have another social studies test Wednesday.

During science, we continue to view our seeds growing and the watching the changes. We’ll be reviewing the plant parts and their functions.

We had our last library book check out for the year last week. If you find any school books at home even if they’re not library books, please send them in.

I still need field trip permission slips from some students. Most have turned them in. I will send home a second copy to those students who told me they lost theirs. The number of chaperones I need is based on the amount of students going. If your child is not going with us please send me an email or a note. Thanks to those who have sent them in.

This week’s spelling words focus on plural and singular words: woman, women, goose, geese, mouse. Dolch words: us, seven, cut, shall, far

This week for our reading strategy, I’ll be reading a book about Henry Ford. I’m weaving in social studies to learn about how an individual has impacted our community. Reading non fiction text and answering questions is still our goal. The students enjoyed learning about their choice of animal these past few weeks as well.

We planted seeds and will observe their growth over these next few weeks.

We’ll end math unit 6 today and begin unit 7 tomorrow. We’ll be learning about units of measurement–both with length and money.

Our spelling words this week will be plurals with “es”–words that mean more than one: boxes, witches, dishes, fixes, sandwiches. The Dolch words: only, much, bring, drink, light.

We’re still focused on informational text reading. This week will be reading about plants to combine what we’re doing in science. We’ll read a non fiction article and answer questions.

Science will be planting seeds and observing their growth by changing certain things about the growing conditions: light/no light; water/no water, etc.

Math moves on to even/odd groupings today. To know if a number is even or odd it needs a “partner”. If there is one leftover after making groups of 2, it’s an odd number.

Social studies continues with change over time in a community. We’ve been looking at some old pictures of Dearborn which the students have been really enjoying.

Our writing continues with finding more facts and information about the animal each student is researching.

Today I sent home a note for our May 14 trip to the wonderful Cranbrook Science Museum. I will need 4 parent chaperones. I sent the note home today so those who want to go but haven’t filled out the background check have time to do so.

There is no fee for this trip 🙂

Please sign for your child to go and come go into the office to fill out the background check if you’d like to go. These take a couple of weeks to complete.

Please send back as soon as possible.

Please send in a fruit with a seed inside for Science Wednesday. Thanks. We’ll be looking at a variety of seeds and the fruits/plants they come from.

We’ll be making timelines this week in Social Studies. That will be the homework tonight. You’ll see the directions to draw 1 important life event in each square. We’ll assemble them in class Tuesday.

We’re continuing with making arrays in math and writing the repeated addition problem that matches. This leads up to multiplication which is taught in 3rd grade.

We’ll continue informational reading including the asking and answering of questions from the text.

I hope your child has told you about the animal they’re learning about for writing. They each got to pick an animal from a set of books I had gathered. We’ll be using these next weeks to read and write facts we’ve learned. If they can get more facts at home via the computer, that would be great as well. Have them bring them in as long as it’s something they can read and understand. I usually do a google search for the topic name and add in “for children”. Such as: zebra facts for children. That will get you to something that is more at their reading level.

PTA Egg Hunt is Wednesday. $4 can be brought in today or tomorrow if your child would like to participate.

We continue our reading focus on informational reading. This week, we’re reading an informational article about our skeleton. Using an image is the main skill.

We’ll begin our animal reports this week by choosing an animal from books I’ve pre selected from our library and book room. We’ll be reading for specific information and recording the facts on our organizer.

Math continues with our section about creating equal groups. This is under Operations and Algebraic Thinking. We’re using the language “groups of” meaning how many groups of ……… are there?

In social studies, we’ll learn the vocabulary “artifacts” to talk about how do people learn about life in the past? From pictures, journals/diaries, talking to people, artifacts.

Science continues with our life science until. We’ll be continuing our discussion of what makes something living compared to non living?

I am sending home the previous math books we were using. We haven’t done everything in them due to time constraints and this being a new program. Feel free to have your child work through the Starry Night book for computation practice and other books to reinforce what we’ve learned.

I’m back in class so here is the information for this week.

If I sent home a conference note, I’ll see you today after school at the scheduled time. All others, report cards will be sent home tomorrow.

The money ($4) for the PTA Spring Egg Hunt can be sent in any day this week.

Don’t forget to send in the purple reading log for the week of Spring Break if your child completed it.

Our reading strategy this week is focused on facts in informational text. We’ll be reading multi paragraph texts and answering questions from the text. Some have illustrations to use and others don’t.

We’re circling back to informational writing also. We’ll be reading about various animals and writing facts we’ve learned. We’ll probably be researching 1 animal per student and gathering interesting facts.

Math begins a new unit. We’ll be getting into easy fractions and equal groups of objects.

Social Studies is learning about the past so our field trip to the historical museum was a perfect introduction.

Science begins a new unit on life science and living and non living things.
