Thank goodness for power 🙂

This is the last week for the morning fruit/vegetable snack.

This week’s Spelling words focus on the “ear” sound:  near, gear, deer, peer, where. Dolch words: was, their, were, think, buy

We’re still focusing on the reading strategy of reading a non fiction passage and being able to answer specific questions as well as understanding the main idea. I am tying this into our writing by having the students read their animal books for facts related to their chosen animal and writing those facts down on a recording sheet.

Math continues to focus on measuring and this week using a ruler and a tape measure. We will also learn about the area of a shape.

We’ll also be learning more about Dearborn’s history for our next Social Studies unit.

Enjoy your week!

Monday April 9, 2018

Welcome Back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable break so now back to the routine 🙂 Please return the reading logs that Dr. Moughni passed out within the next day or two.

Our March PBIS reward time is Wednesday afternoon so, if your child tells you they can bring a toy or electronics it’s fine. Students earn the reward for displaying respectful, responsible, and safe behavior throughout the school day for the month. No clips down to orange or red and/or no more than 2 clips down to yellow in a week. I keep a list here with who has earned the reward and what choice they have made–no one can pull one over on me 😉

Spelling words focus on –are and –air sounds:  stare, dare, rare, fair, chair. Dolch words: read, any, pretty, does, every

We pick back up with our informational reading which involves reading for facts using headings, captions, titles, as well as diagrams and illustrations. We will also use these strategies to learn about an animal and write information we have learned.

Math begins a new unit on measuring length using inches, centimeters, rulers, yardsticks, tape measures, meter sticks.

We’re finishing up a social studies unit about how people work together in communities. We’ll be having a test this week again and I’ll send home a study guide to just refresh memories. I usually haven’t done this because we’ve taken tests right after finishing up a unit so material was fresh in their minds. This time, will be different since we didn’t have time prior to break for the test.

Enjoy your week!

Today’s field trip

The student’s thoroughly enjoyed learning a bit about Dearborn’s history and pioneer life. Please ask them about what they did 🙂

We do have 1 more field trip Tuesday May 29 (the day after Memorial Day) to the Cranbrook Science Museum. I will need 5 chaperones–please come in as soon as possible to get your background check completed if you haven’t already.

This is another great place to visit.

Enjoy your spring break 🙂

Monday March 26, 2018

Last week of March–wow!

No School Friday for the beginning of Spring break. We return April 9.

Our trip to the Dearborn Historical Museum is this Wednesday morning. Lunch will be at school as normal. We’ll be back well before our scheduled lunch time. We will be walking outside among 3 buildings so please dress for outside weather.

Spelling words this week focus on the “ja” sound spelled “ge” : cage, bulge, range, pledge, large. The Dolch words: of, will, fast, tell, off

For our reading and writing strategies for the next 4 weeks, we’ll be focusing on informational reading/writing. Facts, Facts, Facts and the main idea/big idea.

I’ll be having each student choosing an animal to research and write facts about into a report.

We’re finishing up our fraction unit in math and continue with learning the businesses in our community and how some stores specialize in selling products to meet consumer needs.

Earth science continues as well with discussions and writing about living/non living things.

READ a shirt day is Thursday for Spirit “Friday” 🙂

Enjoy your week!

Monday March 19, 2018

Happy Spring! (Tuesday) :)))

Spelling words this week focus on the “hard” and “soft” sounds for the letters c and g: city, cent, cave, gym, girl. Dolch words: give, gave, clean, carry, call.

We’ll be continuing our CAFE strategy of sequencing a story focusing on the key events as well as setting and characters.

Our Writing unit also continues with each student writing their opinion of a book they like that they think someone else would like to read. They are supporting their opinion with 3 appropriate reasons.

Our new Math unit is all about fractions. Students need to be able to read, write and show the fractions 1/3, 1/4, 1/2 for circles, squares, and rectangles.

We’re learning about natural resources and capital resources (tools, people, money) needed to make products. This is taught through stories then related to our daily life.

Spirit Friday is hat day. PBIS February reward day is this Wednesday. I have already talked to those students who have earned this reward. Those that chose a toy from home will bring it that day, as well as, any electronics.

Have a great week!

Monday March 12, 2018

Late Start Wednesday. School begins at 9:35.

Spelling words this week focus on silent letters: knee, gnaw, write, lamb, doubt. Dolch words: want, ride, saw, there, sing

We are continuing to sequence events in stories this week as our reading strategy. Remembering to also identify main characters, setting, and key details.

We’ll begin another unit on opinion writing and focus on a book we would recommend others read–giving 2-3 expanded reasons why they should read that book. I’m expecting reasons beyond, “You’ll like it.”  At this stage students need to write “why” someone would like it.

The math focus this week is reviewing strategies for adding 3-4 2 digit numbers.

Social Studies will reinforce the term “opportunity cost”. This means, when we are limited to only making 1 choice to get something, the opportunity cost is the item you gave up to get your first choice. For example, you want to buy new shoes and you have to choose between 3 kinds you like. We make decisions and think of positive and negative reasons for each pair of shoes. We then buy 1 pair so gave up the opportunity to get the other 2 pairs.

Enjoy the week! Let’s hope this is the last week for snow…. 🙂

Monday March 5, 2018

What a surprise Friday’s snow day was!  Some special events happening this week:

PTA Book Fair–Those students who wish to buy books will be able to Tuesday morning. Forms will come home today. I had planned to send them home Friday.

Our Annual Literacy Night is Tuesday from 5:00-6:30. This is always a fun event.

Please remember, if you haven’t sent in your child’s permission slip and $5.00 for our field trip, please do so as soon as possible this week. IF the slip is lost, please let me know and I’ll send another one with your child.

Library book check out is Thursday. Any books at home should be returned by Wednesday.

Spelling words this week: alone, again, agree, comma, idea. Dolch words: very, them, always, green, because

We are continuing our focused reading strategy which is writing key events of a story in sequence and orally discussing why those events are important.

We’ll also continue studying and writing story opening for personal and imaginative narratives.

In math this week, we’re revisiting number patterns, coin combinations (both making and counting) and graphing.

Since March is Reading Month, if any of you would like to come in and read a story to our class, you are most welcome to do so. Just let me know, and we’ll set up a day and time that works. The students love when their parents or family members come in 🙂

Enjoy the week!
