Thank You

It was so nice to meet so many of you last night at Open House! I love seeing families together and getting to make connections with the students and their families.

PTA Fun Fair today 4:30-7:00 on the school grounds. Beautiful weather to enjoy an evening outside 🙂

Monday September 10, 2018

Open House this Thursday night 6:00-7:30. This is the chance to sign up for conferences that will be in November. I look forward to meeting you!

1/2 Day this Friday. School dismisses at 11:45. No lunch will be served.

Spelling words this week focus on the review of short e, o, u:  jet, went, yet, dog, job, not, put, but, rub, jump. 10 words are given each week. 5 follow the spelling pattern for that week, 5 will be familiar sight words called Dolch words. I also give 5 mystery words each Friday that also follow the pattern but are not practiced during the week. Words are written in student planners by the students weekly.

We’ll be focusing on using illustrations and asking questions of stories we read this week for our reading strategies.

Writing this unit is narrative–story writing. We’ll be writing stories together as well as individually for the next couple of weeks.

Math continues to focus on the fluency of addition and subtraction facts less than 100.

Social Studies will continue to learn about different types of communities and comparing those to Dearborn.

We’re all settling in nicely to our routine and I continue to learn more about the students as people and learners. Very exciting for me!

Enjoy the week 🙂

Thursday September 6, 2018

We are all settling in to Second grade and learning the routines of the new again and of the classroom. We have some new teachers this year that you’ll meet at Open House next week Thursday.

This week we started the NWEA tests for the Fall semester. We took the reading section yesterday and will take the math today.

Planners came home this week. We use it to write special things happening for the week ahead and I have the students write the 10 weekly Spelling words on the page that matches to the date. We write a few each day so by Wednesday they have all the words in their planner. They should be studying the words each night for homework. Our words this week review short a and short i sound. The words are: has, sat, will, fix, him, his, ran, did , can, am.

We’re getting back to strategies that make good readers and writers. We’ve begun our Daily 5 routines and the students are doing well building their stamina back to sitting and reading or writing.

We are using a new math program this year. The big focus this unit is groups or number bonds of 10: 6+4, 8+2, 9+1, etc.

We’ve begun learning a bit about communities and what is found in our community of Dearborn in Social Studies.

Enjoy the week!

August 30, 2018

Welcome back to school and welcome to Second grade 🙂

If you found your way to my blog this week, I’ll be updating weekly with all kinds of information about what we’ll be doing for the week in school.

We’re off to a great start and all the children are adjusting very nicely and making new friends.

Enjoy your weekend and I’ll see the students back on Tuesday September 4.

Monday June 11, 2018

Welcome to the last week of 2nd grade 🙂

We’ll be straightening up, cleaning and organizing our classroom, desks, and lockers. I’ll let you know when the last day for backpacks will be when I find out at our teacher meeting today. I’ll be sending more items home daily from their desks.

The math books that came home can be used as review and practice. The multiplication pages will be a skill learned in 3rd grade so those can be used to get a head start on that skill. Your child can also go back and use the pages already done as review for skills learned this year.

If you find anything at home that belongs to the school or my room, please send it in this week. If you find anything over the summer, please save it and have your child bring it to me when school starts again in August.

We’ll be having a 2nd grade Field Day Wednesday afternoon so please have your child wear gym type clothes and shoes.

I’ll send report cards home when I get them this week. I’ll also be putting some papers and notes from me, the school, and community in the envelopes instead of sending everything home loose.

No lunch Thursday. School dismisses at 11:45

Thank you for your support and help this year. It was a great learning year for your child!

Enjoy your summer 🙂

Monday June 4, 2018

Welcome to the last full week of Second Grade 🙂

It’ll be a full week with the last of the unit tests so please encourage your child to continue to work hard and stay focused for these last days.

Spelling words this week focus on words with prefixes and suffixes: reread, preview, preschool, unable, disagree, friendly, likely, careful, coldness, walkable.

We’re continuing our narrative (story) writing this week. The students did a nice job last week writing a story of their own choosing and most all chose an imaginative narrative 🙂

Our reading strategy is reading 2 texts on the same topic and comparing and contrasting the ideas from both. This is done whole group and will prepare them for doing work like this on their own in future grades.

The big math strategy is subtraction with trading and we’ll focus on that a bit more this week as well as review other addition and subtraction strategies.

Books and papers will begin coming home little by little. Desks will be getting cleaned out and the room little by little will begin getting closed up for the summer.

We’ve still got this last week though of work to do.

Enjoy the week!

tonight’s homeowork

I introduced subtraction with trading today. If it’s too confusing for your child and they are too frustrated, just let it be and don’t complete it. Just return tomorrow unfinished.

The goal is 3 digit subtraction without trading (borrowing). They understood that goal so I moved onto the trading (borrowing).
