Monday December 3, 2018

PTA book fair begins this week. Our class is going Friday morning. If you’d like your child to purchase a book, please send money in by then. A form will be coming home this week.

Library books are due Wednesday. Our book check out day is Thursday morning.

We’ll be having our second Social Studies test this week. A study guide will be coming home today. The test is taken on the computers and the written portion in class as a usual written assignment.

Spelling words this week have the diagraphs we learned last week at the end of the word: each, match, which, dish, wish. The Dolch reading words: both, this, that, wish, wash.

Our reading strategy is point of view. We’ll be reading stories and talking about the different characters point of view of the same events.

Our writing focus shifts to narrative (story) writing for the next few weeks. I’ll be reviewing that stories need 1 or more characters, a setting, a main event or problem and a solution to that problem.

Math this week continues the focus on counting to 1,000 using a place value chart and writing the models for numbers.

Enjoy your week πŸ™‚

Monday November 26, 2018

Good morning! I hope everyone enjoyed their time off however it was spent πŸ™‚

We are collecting for the Mitten Tree again this year. New hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks are welcome for donation to a worthy community group.

We’re back to a full week and moustache day is Friday.

Spelling words this week focus on what is called diagraphs (ch, sh, th, wh) letters that blend together to make a new sound. chill, chase, sheep, think, while. The Dolch reading words are: where, when, thank, then, she.

This is our last week for a bit on informational reading and writing. We continue to read articles and focus on the main ideas of the paragraphs by using the facts. We’ll finish up our paragraph writing about owls. Each student has their own facts they chose that were interesting to them. We’re also learning to use transitions between sentences to make our writing flow better.

Math this week and next focus’ on understanding place value units of 1,10, and 100. Many different counting activities using our meter sticks, tape measures, stick bundles, and even the clock.

Science will involve viewing and sorting different forms of water in liquid and solid form (snow, hail, sleet, rain, etc.)Β  This leads into where water is found on Earth.

Social Studies will begin a few lessons on the positive and negative consequences of changing the environment of a community. We use a community called Treeville that stands in the place of a real community. I always bring up how Dearborn’s community was changed when Fairlane Mall was built. It was a huge wetland that was the “front yard” of Henry Ford’s home “Fairlane”. It was filled in to make the mall. Much community protest for and against this project way back when it happened.

Enjoy your week!

Monday November 19, 2018

No school Wednesday-Friday this week. Please enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. School resumes Monday November 26.

No spelling this week due to the short week.

Our reading strategy continues with informational reading for facts. We’ll be doing some reading about the Pilgrims, who they were, where they came from and why they came here. We’ll also read about the famous ship they sailed on, the Mayflower.

We’ll also do some writing about people and things we’re thankful for.

We’re starting a new math unit that focus’ on counting and using base 10 units (ones, tens, hundreds, thousand) to 1000.

Stay warm πŸ™‚

Zearn.com new math site :)

Dear Parents,

Zearn is a math site that supports what we’re learning with our new math program; Eureka Math. I’m excited for them to begin using this to practice their math skills.

Each student will sign in using their First and Last name without a space in between as their username. The password is their birthdate using the form like this: 11042011 (2 digits for month, 2 digits for date and 4 digits for year) just like for Raz Kids.

The site is zearn.com.Β  The class code isΒ FQ4M9A

Please give it a try and let me know how it goes πŸ™‚

Cold Weather dressing

Now that the weather has changed, please make sure your child has gloves/mittens, in addition to a warm coat with a hood or a hat to wear for outside recess.Β  If they wear boots to school, please make sure they have their shoes to change into once they get here.

The concert Thursday is also our gym day. If your child would like to wear a nice outfit for the concert, please send gym clothes to school for them to change into.Β

Second Grade Music Concert this Thursday at 10:00 in Main Cafeteria. We’re looking forward to seeing you there πŸ™‚

Conferences are this week Tuesday and Thursday once again. If you’re scheduled with me and can’t make it, please call the office or send me an email to reschedule.

Spelling words this week focus on the long e sound spelled “ea”, “ee”, and “y” at the end of the word: meat, mean, queen, beet, baby. The Dolch reading words are: eat, please, sleep, three, many.

For our reading strategy, we’re continuing to read non-fiction and reading for facts about the subject. Those facts would answer questions who, what, why, where, when, how.

Our writing strategy ties in with reading. We’re continuing to read about owls to gather facts and writing what we’ve learned.Β  This week using library books. We’ll begin later this week, to write those facts into a paragraph.

My goal is to finish up the current math unit about measuring this week. We’ll continue to use tape measures, meter sticks, and rulers as our tools.

Social Studies will continue with looking at our map of Dearborn and finding transportation methods within our community. Also discussing the types we don’t have such as boats, subways, commuter trains.

Thank you to those who helped your child with the ways you use water in your job at home or work. We’ll be using those answers to categorize for the fun use of water and necessary/work use for water.

Library Book Check out is this Thursday. Please have books back to school by Wednesday.

Enjoy your week πŸ™‚

Monday November 5, 2018

No School tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 6 due to Election Day.

Spelling words focus on the long o sound: grow, low, toe, goes, soap. The Dolch words: own, show, know, now, how

We’re continuing to focus on informational text in both reading and writing.Β  We’re reading and writing facts about a girl who’s family is deaf and also reading facts about owls so we can write what we’ve learned about these birds.

Our math lessons continue with measuring and comparing lengths using meters and centimeters. We’ve learned that a centimeter is about the width of our pinky finger, an unsharpened pencil is about 20 centimeters, and our arms stretched out is about a meter. We also learned that 1 meter is about 2 of our classroom desks pushed together. We’ve been calling these Benchmark measures.

We’re beginning a new Science unit so the for the next 6 weeks or so we’ll be learning all about water, where it’s found on Earth, what those are called: river, ocean, stream, pond, lake, glacier. And how water has shaped Earth’s surface.

Social Studies is still reading different maps. This week is comparing Dearborn to another community using maps to see what’s the same and what’s different.

Please remember, some of you having conferences with me this Thursday after school. If you can’t make it for some reason, please send me an email. As in the past, report cards will be gone over and given to you then.

Have an awesome week!
