Well, the first month of school is behind us now. The students are doing great with our routines and schedule.
My goal is to finish assessing students this week and we’ll be able to begin our reading group rotations next week. We are still reading daily, by ourselves, as a group, as well as writing in our response journals as well as doing whole class writing. This week it’s a non fiction about storms. We do have 2 other teachers coming in during our reading block time to work with small groups.
We are continuing with the measuring unit in math. They are doing well with measuring the length of objects or line. The students are having a bit of difficulty with “how much longer/shorter” is one line or object than another. This will come but please continue to help them with this concept.
Today’s homework does not need to measure paper clips. We’ve been doing that in class. If you have paper clips at home and they want to do those parts, great. If no paper clips, then just measure with the centimeter ruler.
This week for social studies, we’ll be learning about 3 types of communities: rural (farm), urban (city) and suburban areas.
In science, we continue learning about the properties of matter. Last week was the great hat activity! They loved creating and I loved watching them 🙂 The properties were, soft, hard, opaque, absorbent. This week will be an activity with hot/cold items and which materials hold heat or cold in or out better. Each student will need a pair of gloves or mittens for Friday’s activity.
All for now, enjoy your week 🙂
