Week of 5-29-18

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and was able to take some time to reflect on how thankful we are for all of our service men and women who serve, have served, and gave the ultimate sacrifice. This week we are working on taking our science and language NWEA. They are both longer tests that will last more than one day so please make sure the kids are well rested and eat a good breakfast. We are lucky to have AC in our room during this heat but they do go out for lunch and recess. The PTA is selling reusable water bottles with the Nowlin logo for Field Day. They are $2.00 each. We will be collecting the money up until the Tuesday before field day. You can send it in anytime. Please don’t forget to send in the permission slip and $15 for our year end Skyzone celebration. You must also fill out the Skyzone release form that is on Dojo, or in last blog post.

Week of 5-21-18

Happy Monday everyone. This week we are finishing up our reading NWEA. Next week we will start language and science NWEA. Once those are finished our testing will be complete. Watch for information and permission slips to come home soon for our year-end celebration.

We have finished MSTEP and we have 4 NWEA tests left. We will be testing this week on Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the first two of those. We will finish next week when we take the last two next Tuesday and next Wednesday. The Bandit Dash Color fun-run is this week. For the rest of our week, we will have a normal week.

Week of 5-7-18

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I can’t believe how fast time is flying by. We have M-STEP testing tomorrow through the rest of the week and then we start two weeks of NWEA testing. The type of work we will be doing in class will still be curriculum based so you will not see as much work coming home as normal. Don’t forget to send in your Bandit Dash permission slips and $10 per runner to get registered!

Week of 4-30-18

MSTEP and NWEA are upon us. While we will still working on learning across the subjects, the students will be testing for long extended times. We are still in need of donations of brain food for the kids to keep them motivated, working and doing their best. We have a donated fruit tray and some drinks have been donated. Any unused donation will be rolled into our year-end celebration. Please consider donating single packed apple slices, juice boxes, water bottles, and mints. Mints are scientifically proven to increase brain activity and we talk one before every single session. Homework will be light this week because of the testing but we will still have each subject:

Week of 4/23/18

It seems spring has finally sprung and the nicer weather is here. Next week starts our MSTEP testing. The two weeks following MSTEP will be our NWEA testing. We are still in need of volunteers to send in water bottles, juice boxes, mints, and/or healthy snacks to have before and during testing. If you would like to send something in, please let me know what you are planning on donating.

Reading-We are continuing with our strategy groups and will be incorporating our study of poetry into reading.

Week of 4-18-18

Hello everyone! I apologize for the late blog post this week. The Living Wax Museum was a huge success. I was so impressed with all of the students. They did so well! M-STEP with the 5th grade is in full swing so we have had guests in our room. The other 4th graders have been with us while their classmates test. Our class will start testing the first week of May. We are looking for donations of individually wrapped mint Lifesavers or a generic equivalent. We are also looking for juice boxes/small bottles of water and individually wrapped snack bars/healthy snacks for 24 students x 6. We have 4 NWEA tests and at least 2 sessions of M-STEP. If you would like to donate, please comment here, on Dojo or let me know! Thanks in advance for helping make testing as easy on the students as possible. Students also need to be finishing up their grade level Khan Academy Missions. Most students are around 80% and need to keep working until they finish their grade level mission.

Week of 4-16-2018

Hi everyone! I hope everyone stayed safe, dry, warm, and with electricity this weekend. Hopefully, some normal Spring weather shows up soon! This week our schedule is off a bit because we will have all of the 4th graders in here while the 5th grades M-Step test. The PTA is looking for volunteers to sign up for the Bandit Dash Color Run. If you are able and willing to grab a time slot, please go to ClassDojo and find their post with the Sign Up Genious. Our testing will begin next week so make sure your student is still reading for 35 minutes every night and getting in Khan Academy practice nightly. We have about a month left until all students need to be at 100%.

This week:

Math-Both grades are working on a new fraction unit. The 3’s are identifying fractions and their models and 4’s are starting to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

Science-3rd-Parana

4th-We are continuing our study of the body systems that help organisms survive.

Social Studies-3rd Parana

4th-We are looking at the responsibilities of each citizen and the things we need to do to maintain our freedoms.

Writing-We are finishing out narrative writing and will start working on a How-To piece that utilizes sequencing words

Reading-We are still working on figurative language. We are also going to start looking at the parts of a poem.

Week of 4-9-18

Welcome back! I hope Spring Break was a nice recharging week for everyone. M-STEP is starting this week for 5th and our class will be starting soon. Due to the splits in the building, our schedule will be changed to accommodate testing in 5th grade. The 3rd grade has their Lansing Trip tomorrow with Mrs. Parana and all students have their big Living Wax Museum project due on Friday. We will have other classes coming through our room on Friday to hear their presentations and look at their props/costumes. There are no make-up projects allowed for this because classes are only coming in on Friday. Students must bring their materials and be prepared by the morning.

This week:

Spelling: We are looking at words that end in /y/ and get replaced by/ies/:

Math-3rd-We are looking at how patterns in multiplication relate to patterns in single digit division problems.

Reading- We are working on informational text features and their purposes, locating examples of figurative language, and lastly, we are going to be looking the framework of different types of poetry.
