Balanced or Unbalanced?

We worked on these problems on the board today in our INB:  Balanced

Many students are still finishing their problems and took their notebooks to complete for homework.

Here is a sample problem that shows how to do this type of work:

This is an example of a balanced equation. Remember: the equation is UNBALANCED if ANY of the element totals don’t match on the right and the left… but it can be tricky if you don’t combine them into one list like I have done in the example. Some of the problems are sneaky. 🙂

Friday Update!

Good afternoon everyone!

What a wild day…

Today students should have turned in their Counting Atoms Practice with the coloring sheet on the back. Those who did not have been ZAPPED for Monday. I printed a few extra copies… look for the one I handed you first, and then get them while they last.

Today’s quiz was short… only 3 molecules to count out and each one had 4-5 questions to answer about it. Makeups from Monday’s quiz were handled today as well.

Students had an 8 question homework assignment. Some finished it already and turned it in. We are deciding whether equations are balanced or not by counting all of the atoms on both sides of the chemical equation and comparing the element totals. I have attached a “cheat sheet” I projected on the board for one of the classes in case it is helpful to any of you for the homework assignment.  BALANCING EQUATIONS CHEAT SHEET

Have a great weekend!

Update on This Week’s HW

Good morning parents!

A special thank you to students who worked really hard last night and finished their homework. However, several students reached out to me complaining that they needed more time for whatever reason, so I granted an extra day on this homework. It is now due on Friday!

I’m sorry, since students had no trouble completing 18 problems in 40 minutes, I didn’t think 12 problems for homework would be too hard. I think the coloring sheet was a little bit too much for one night. Thank you for your patience.

Week of Feb 25-Mar 1

After our Atoms Review Quiz, we started taking notes on counting atoms in molecules. Students will have practice activities between now and Friday’s quiz. Expect to see homework tonight that is due tomorrow, Thursday 2/28. Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Atoms Review Quiz

Good morning!

Today we are working on Atoms Review Quiz. Students will show their understanding of the structure of atoms and how to count subatomic particles. It is an open-notes quiz. We will also discuss using my blog and progress report grades. Happy Monday!

Extra Assignment

Parents of 6th hour students only:

As a result of overall classroom behavior, a 2nd assignment was given to students in my 6th hour class.

Read pg. 82-87 in “Introduction to Matter”
Complete questions #1-10 on pg. 87

Students complained that they should not have to do the assignment if they were not the students misbehaving… however, the entire class was misbehaving, so the entire class received the assignment.

Eight students completed the assignment. These students who followed directions and showed respect for the teacher will be rewarded with extra credit for their work on this assignment.

All other students received a phone call home to discuss their behavior.

This assignment cannot be made up.

Try to have a nice weekend!

Week of Feb 19-22

Hello everyone!

This week we started putting things in our Interactive Notebooks. We started with “Atoms Review.” We took lots of notes this week to cover a whole bunch of chemistry in just a few short days. Today’s assignment was to work on 5 practice problems in our INB and turn it in before the end of the hour! Students who did not finish can expect to be sent to “ZAP” during lunch to finish it.

We will close off the week with a worksheet assignment practicing the “APE MAN” strategy for counting subatomic particles. Students who do not finish it by the end of the hour MUST show me what they did during class and get my initials on their paper before they leave. Parents: please note that students had the entire hour to complete these problems. If they are taking it home, they are either struggling with this concept a lot or were not on task during class. Check for my notes by my initials! Thanks 🙂 Have a good weekend!

** 1st hour: Only one student did not finish. He was asked to ZAP during lunch to complete it. No homework!
** 2nd hour: All students who were present today finished their assignment. No homework!
** 6th hour: Only one student did not finish. He will be asked to ZAP during lunch to complete it. No homework!
