Have a great week!

Hello everyone! As we approach the month of March I would like to thank everyone of you for being involved in your child’s education and caring so much about their academic success. Your children are a pleasure to have in my class and it is so rewarding to observe their growth academically and socially. I am hoping to assess your child on their reading level by this Friday. I will notify you of your child’s reading level and provide with a grade-equivalent chart. Please make sure to look for this note in your child’s folder sometime next week.

I love March because it is READING MONTH!!! Even though students should be reading throughout the entire year, March is the month when students usually read the most minutes. In class we will be spending most of our daily 5 time reading to self, reading to the teacher, and reading to our friends. I hope you are able to come read a book to our class during this month. (A note was sent home today regarding mystery readers) Students are always excited to hear new stories being read aloud by people other than me! I actually just took my boys to the library this past weekend and had them choose some books to read during this month. I encourage you to take your child for a visit at one of the Dearborn Public libraries to check out some “good-fit” books. Here are some topics we will be working on this week.

Our spelling unit will focus on words with the “all” word family:

all, small, fall, call, tall, mall, put, with

Math:

We will begin our geometry unit this week. We will be reviewing some 2D shapes and then moving on to 3D shapes. Here are some great games your child can play to strengthen their geometry skills:

Hello everyone! We may have a snow day tomorrow so make sure to stay posted for school closings on our local news channels.  We do have a math test on Monday, February 29. I passed out the study guide for this test today. Please make sure to review it with your child over the next couple of days. Some of the questions may be a bit challenging but with lots of practice your child will understand these math concepts. Please let me know if you need any math tools or explanations for any of the questions on the study guide.

This Friday will be our PBIS reward party at 2:00.  Students who are attending will be making crafts such as necklaces, bracelets, and key chains. If you would like to volunteer for this fun activity just sign in at the office and come to our classroom by 1:50. I would appreciate your help!

Stay safe & warm!

I hope everyone has enjoyed their mid-winter break! This week we will be continuing most of the lessons from last week. We will continue with the spelling pattern /ow/ and /ou/ Our next spelling test will be this Friday.  The words will be the same list as last weeks.  Please make sure to continue guiding your child with solving fact families.  This is a challenging math concept that students need to grasp in first grade. Hopefully, your child has memorized their complete address.  We will be using this information during our social studies unit this week.  Enjoy the rest of your week!

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the weather this weekend! This Thursday students will be celebrating “friendship” by writing kind notes to one another and sharing some treats. We will have a small celebration Thursday afternoon. If your child would like they may bring in Valentine Day cards for their friends and a small treat to share. We have 25 students in our class. The cards do not have to be made out specifically to each friend. There will be  no school this Friday the 12th and Monday the 15th. Below are some topics we will be learning about this week.

Spelling: Students will be reading and writing words with the pattern of /ou/ Here are the weekly spelling words:

I would like to thank all the parents who contributed money and water bottles for Flint last week. Your generosity and kindness is greatly appreciated at McUnis! The students have finally finished their NWEA assessments. Last week students completed their NWEA math assessment and the growth they have made is tremendous. You should be so proud of your little one for improving and moving ahead in first grade. I strive each day to create a nurturing learning environment for your child and without your support I would not be able to bring out the best in your child. They are all such hard workers and extremely dedicated to learning. Your child’s NWEA scores will be sent home with report cards sometime this week or next week.

We have another busy week ahead of us. Here are some topics we will be learning about this week.

Science & Writing: We will wrap up our unit on weather this week. Students will incorporate their learning about severe weather during writer’s workshop. Hopefully when the students are finished publishing their informational writing they will bring it home to show you their writing skills.
