Class Standards & Expectations

CLASS STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS:

These are the classroom standards and expectations for my classes. Please familiarize yourself with these.

Attendance: As expected, I accurately follow all Dearborn Public Schools’ rules regarding attendance. You are expected:

  1. to be in class on time. Otherwise, you will be marked Tardy or Late.
  2. Tardy is defined as not being in my classroom when the tardy bell rings.
  3. Late after 5 Minutes and Late after 15 minutes is defined as you arriving in my room more than either 5 minutes or 15 minutes after the Tardy bell has rung.
  4. I will mark you either Tardy, Late after 5 minutes, or Late after 15 minutes based on what applies. If there is a problem arriving to class that is unusual, please discuss it with me. I am not unreasonable about the issue.  But you are expected to be in class on time.

Behavior: I accurately follow and enforce the student code of conduct. I expect every person in my classroom, including myself as the teacher, to treat everyone else with respect AND to expect to be treated with respect. All forms of harassment and bullying are absolutely forbidden. Hats, sunglasses and inappropriate clothing are not to be worn in my classroom. Inappropriate language is not to be used.

Vaping:  If I catch a student vaping or using any kind of smoking device, the school rules on that subject will be enforced to fullest. It is against all school rules to use any kind of smoking or vaping device or item on any campus of the Dearborn Public Schools.

Food and Drink:  There is to be NO Food, Candy, or Drink allowed in my classrooms with the exception of clear water in a drink bottle. Violation of this rule will begin with a warning and then move to a write up to the principal. I do not eat during class time and my students can follow the same rule.

A Problem In My Classroom: If a problem exists in my classroom between two students, and it should be brought to my attention, please do not hesitate to do so. I cannot help solve a problem if I don’t know one exists or if I am not aware as to the severity of the problem or issue. Also, If there is a problem with something that I, the teacher, am doing, that also needs to be brought to my attention.

Electronics: I Follow the Dearborn High School /Dearborn Public Schools Policy when it comes to phones and electronics in my classroom.  They are not to be used or out in view.  I will ask for your phone if I see it out. Giving me the phone without a discussion or argument will make the whole situation better. I will not “take” your phone from you. If you have it out, and do not choose to give it to me, I will be forced to follow school rules on the issue and write you up for discipline. It is not something I want to do.

Assignments/Due Dates: All assignments in my classroom are to be either hand written in black or blue ink or to be typed on a word processor. Assignments that are handed in after a due date, or in the case of a performance or project presentation, presented after the due date, could possibly lose up to one full grade per day for being late. Failure to hand in an assignment or present a project or performance will result in a Zero (0) for that assignment.

Retakes on Quizzes and Exams: I am very open to a student’s request for a retake on a quiz or exam. The public school system has a procedure in place for requesting a retake on a quiz or exam and I follow that process. However, because of that process, students should keep in mind that there is no guarantee that a retake on a quiz or exam will be offered. Therefore, students Should Not Assume there will be.

Meeting with Students and Parents:

I am always available to meet with a student and/or parent (s) regarding a student’s progress in my class.

My school email is as follows: viscomg@dearbornschools.org. Or I can be reached thru the school mainline at 313-827-1600. Email is probably the most efficient way to communicate because I can send back to you not only the information you request but it will be waiting for you at your convenience. However, if you wish to discuss the issue in person or over the phone, I am happy to do that as well.  I’ll return your message or email within 24 hours.

Grading:  All grading in my class is done on a point system. Your grade is based on the points you’ve earned vs the points possible. 80% of your grade is based on Summative Assignments ( quizzes, exams, large essays, projects, major performances) and 20% is based on Formative Assignments ( homework, in class performance workshops, inprompt essays, in class activities).  Extra Credit is offered occasionally, either as an additional question on a quiz or exam or as a special assignment or special participation. Extra Credit opportunities are always educationally based. However, while Extra Credit can be accumulated throughout the semester, it is ONLY added into a student’s grade column for the final marking period of the semester.

Grading Scale:  I use the following grading scale for my classes. The following numbers are percentages.

A   100-94         A – 93-90       B+ 89-87

B  86-84            B- 83-80        C+ 79-77

C  76-74            C- 73-70        D+ 69-67

D  66-64            D- 63-60        E   59 – 0
