End of week assignment

I need you to choose one assignment to do based on your reading/watching from this week. Please make sure you are enrolled for both Google Classroom and iLearn (I have shared the codes many times, please go looking for them before emailing me).

For those of you who are watching the youtube series, I have posted an assignment on that section of the iLearn (https://moodle.dearbornschools.org/course/view.php?id=3547#section-2).

For those of you reading A Scandal in Bohemia, I have posted another discussion topic describes what you need to do. (https://moodle.dearbornschools.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=18667#p44932)

To keep track of who is doing what, please choose your answer below. I would like you to answer the question and try to finish your work before Friday at 2:15 PM. Thanks!

Sorry for posting this late.

I will not be posting Khan Academy work this week, so please focus on either watching the videos or reading the story. The goal here is to watch or read a little bit every day this week, and check in on the discussion forum to see what you can contribute. Please make sure you are either reading or watching (or both) and discussing on the appropriate forum.

Both discussions for this week will be based on the game “Two truths and a lie.” Please post two truths and a lie about things that happened in the videos (up to episode 5) or the story. The good answers will be clever, better answers will include references to science or chemistry, and the best scores will go to people who engage in conversation/reply to other peoples lists by trying to guess or figure out which is the lie.

For the YouTube series Making Perfect Season 1: Pizza (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKtIunYVkv_RSLdWzWGYx8kmJQBVhNP0w) (Discussion forum: https://moodle.dearbornschools.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=18572#p44678)

For the Sherlock Homes story (A Scandal in Bohemia from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes) (Free eBook: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1661/1661-h/1661-h.htm) (Discussion: https://moodle.dearbornschools.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=18575#p44681)

Hope Spring Break was relaxing. Survey posted to Google Classroom

I am going to hold off from starting any new assignments today, since I just want everybody to fill in the survey. PLEASE FILL THIS IN ASAP. There are only 5 questions to answer other than putting your name and hour. I am making this due by tomorrow at 10 AM.

Continue watching the Bon Appetit Making Perfect videos about pizza and reading A Scandal in Bohemia. I will post new discussion topics tomorrow.

Keep working and figuring out iLearn

I need everybody enrolled in iLearn and posting when we get back from spring break. Enrollment code: pxcf2w

Here is the puzzle from yesterday with a hint post from me:
https://moodle.dearbornschools.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=18152#p43597

Other than that, just keep reading (I will be reading and recording the rest of A Scandal in Bohemia, Harry Potter, and maybe 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, if you would like to read along with me over break). A Scandal in Bohemia and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea can be read for free from Project Gutenberg. http://www.gutenberg.org/

I will also be trying to make my own perfect pizza (video playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKtIunYVkv_RSLdWzWGYx8kmJQBVhNP0w ). People are discussing this in the Learning From YouTube forum in the YouTube Discussions topic in iLearn).

Email me if you have questions or need anything. Remember, “no work, no credit.” Anyone who is not doing the work will be reported to administration to contact your parents.

Just an examination and reflection survey today, but please keep reading/watching and discussing on iLearn

I am trying to stretch out the work for this week to help people get a feel for iLearn. I’m sorry that it’s frustrating, but I think it will be worth the work.

Please fill out the google form (if more than 50 people fill it out before 2pm, I will sing Party in The USA and post it to youtube). It is based off the first two episodes of the YouTube series (if you have chosen to read the Sherlock Holmes story, no need to fill out the form, just post to the discussion board).

If you have more time, please work on Khan Academy and watch episode 3 of the youtube series.

New puzzle posted and Khan has a new assignment:

Since the correct answer was posted in the first puzzle, I have a new puzzle for you to figure out. This one requires you to gather more information than I give in the original post. Please ask some yes or no questions to help you get more information. You may also discuss amongst yourselves. This will require reading old posts for new information and working together. Announcement from Google Classroom

We are still learning how to get around iLearn, so I get that it is frustrating. Now is the best time to figure these things out because the assignments are based around the discussion forums, which means you don’t have to participate at a specific time, or before a specific time. You just need to make sure you read what others have wrote and consider that information before you post your thoughts.

For the book club – I have started a discussion board where we are trying to summarize what happens in part 1 by writing one “tweet” at a time. That means you start at the beginning, and write a sentence or two about what happened. Then someone will write a sentence or two about what happens next. The cool thing is that you can use the reply function if someone skipped an event. It won’t be perfect, but it should be fun, challenging, and enlightening.

For the YouTube channel – the conversation is going well, so I am going to keep that chat going for now. I will create a new forum to include episode 3 for tomorrow.

We will be writing a paper based on the work and discussions we have surrounding these things, so please be sure to participate in at least one of these discussion boards. There are no new assignments today for these two things (so keep reading part 1 of the story, and/or watch the first 2 episodes of the youtube playlist, then keep up the discussions in the forum).

Riddles, and YouTube, and Reading…oh my! [Google Classroom and iLearn]

First, take a breath…there are multiple parts and multiple choices to this assignment. To satisfy both requirements for school and requests by all of you, I am giving you choices for how you want to learn this week. First, choose between either reading the Sherlock Holmes story called A Scandal in Bohemia or watching the YouTube series Making Perfect Season 1: Pizza by the Bon Appetit YouTube channel.

For Sherlock Holmes: Read part 1 of the story by Tuesday, and post something to the discussion forum on iLearn (there will be more instructions on iLearn.

For Making Perfect Pizza: Watch the first 2 episodes by Tuesday and post something to the discussion forum on iLearn (there will be more instructions on iLearn.

Finally, for the daily riddles and puzzles, it is apparent that you are not reading the other posts, and just posting your own guess. In order to figure out the riddle, you need to learn from each other. (Hint…someone figured it out, but people kept posting after…)

I will be participating in these instructions and building quizzes based on what goes on in them. It is best if you participate and think about what others are saying in order to get the most out of this work.

A puzzle for today: What prize would you choose? [Google Classroom, iLearn]

On the discussion board in the Daily Puzzles and Brain Teasers section of iLearn, I have given you a choice between 4 different prizes. To help you make your decision, I have also included a link to a helpful story.

The enrollment code is posted to Google Classroom

These puzzles rely on the honor system, so please don’t try to Google the answer. You may use calculators and other resources to help make your decision and convince your classmates.

The expectation is that your work for today will be adding to the discussion board on iLearn. If you are having issues, please email me.

No real work today, just a review video, a survey, and an iLearn to sign up for [Google Classroom]

Posted to Google Classroom:

1. No chemistry or math work today, so feel free to take a break (or work on the Khan Academy)
2. Please fill out the survey for today because I will use your responses to design some different/fun activities for the next week or so of learning.
3. Please sign up for iLearn (enrollment code: pxcf2w) because I think iLearn has a better format for doing class discussions/forums.

(I have the due date set for today to encourage so I can use your responses sooner, but please do whatever works best for you)

[Please also check Google classroom for the information about video chats with me for checking in or asking questions or whatever you need]

Yesterday we did some work on the sizes of different things and how many small things can fit into bigger things. Today we are going to combine your mental pictures/models of that work with some math and the models of particles on the surface of the water. This is a lot of mental work, so please take notes and draw pictures. For any math that we do, you may use a calculator or your phone or google or wolfram alpha or whatever you need. The purpose is to do the thinking.
