Week of Sept. 30

We read a book , The Big Orange Splot in class. It is about diversity in a neighborhood. In this book, a man repaints his house to reflect his colorful dreams. At first his neighbors are appalled, but one by one they begin to embrace their dreams/personalities through their own houses.

Objective: The students used the Engineering Design Process to create a house that represents their dreams or personalities using items from our MakerSpace area or they drew their dream house on paper. We have already discovered that we have very diverse personalities. We have interests in bugs, soccer, flowers, rainbows, unicorns, animals, etc..

Week of September 9 & Open House

We had a great turnout in the STEAM classroom for Open House. The children showed their families around the room and participated in STEAM challenges.

We also talked about tools of science this week. Students explored with magnifying glasses and eye droppers. They used the dropper to put colored vinegar on baking soda and observed the reaction.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back Whitmore Families!

I am looking forward to another exciting year in  Science Enrichment!  Each class will have enrichment once a week for 45 minutes . We will be focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) lessons in enrichment. Throughout the year, the students will be participating in hands on activities and experiments to  support  the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  The students will learn about the science and engineering design process as they engage in our science investigations. Math is incorporated into many of the investigations as students measure and compare data.  At the end of the year we were able to use our chrome books to learn some beginning coding. We will build on to that experience this year. Whitmore Bolles received a grant through Ford Motor Company and the District last year and we were able to purchase many new materials to use in the classroom. We will continue to work with these materials this year to develop further understanding of the science and engineering process. We also started a Makerspace area in the classroom last year. The students can use the things in this area to imagine, create and problem solve using the engineering design process. Our Makerspace area is growing. I will be posting a list of things that will help keep it stocked. Many of the lessons involve teamwork so the students collaborate (synergize) with others to work on a project and follow the 7 Habits in the process. So many fun and exciting things happening in enrichment this year!!
