STEAM March 30-April 3

Hi everybody! I hope you are doing well. I have included different lessons again this week with the same format. I put the Maker Stations posting from a previous blog in this blog as well as a reminder to complete 3 activities. I am adding new pictures that were sent to me. Please send me pictures of your maker station creations or science experiments to put on my blog and feel free to email me flemink@dearbornschools.org I will be happy to email you back.

Cayden sent me an email about the science experiment that he did. The experiment was posted on my blog last week if you want to try it yourself:

Cayden Waske from Mrs. Bennetts classScience experiment from march 23-27
When we put the baking soda and vinegar with the water it started to fizz.  And then when we put the raisins in alot ofbthem went down except one.  Then they started to rise back up.

Storyline Online is a great STEAM resource for parents and children to do at home. There is no login and the story is read to students. Storyline Online has an activity guide section for teachers and parents with many STEAM activities relating to the story. I have included the parent activity guide which gives discussion questions and STEAM ideas relating to the book.

Mystery Science is a science resource we use. You should be able to click on the links to get to the lessons.

Brain pop is another good science resource. Students can take the quiz at the end of the lesson. There are also other activities they can do corresponding to the lesson. The site also contains lessons from other subject areas. They have given us free access for schools that are closed. User name – flemink – password – Whitmore2020

Maker Stations

I am including the Maker Stations in this blog post again so you can continue to work on these at home. Brooke Brown has created a free pack of 15 Maker Stations for three weeks of at-home learning. Each Maker Station includes simple challenges using items around the home, scannable QR code resources, and a student recording sheet. Enjoy the activities! You can do them all but please complete at least 3 total over the next month. Bring the student reflection and recording sheets (the page with the blueprint) to school when we get back so I can see what you did. Another option would be to take a picture of your finished projects and send to my email: flemink@dearbornschools.org

These are Justin’s finished projects

STEAM – March 23-27

Hi again! I hope everyone is staying healthy while we are not in school. I have included different lessons this week with the same format. I have put the Maker Stations posting from a previous blog in this blog as well as a reminder to complete 3 activities. I also added a science experiment at the end that a friend of mine put on YouTube. If you do the experiment home, write a couple sentences about what happened and or how you would change or improve the experiment. Please feel free to email me flemink@dearbornschools.org

Storyline Online has an activity guide section for teachers and parents with many STEAM activities relating to the story. This week I have included the parent activity guide which gives discussion questions and ideas on how to create projects with recycled materials just like we do in class. The possibilities are endless.

Feb. 24-28

Young 5’s sorted fruit loops by color, put fruit loops on a graph, then shaded in how many of each color fruit loops they had. Then they were able to eat them.

Our ASD students enjoyed watching tornado tubes in action.

2nd graders demonstrated with their bodies how water makes its way through different types of soils.

January/February STEAM

3rd graders are learning about forces and motion.  They designed a ramp to see if the height of the ramp affects the speed and distance of an object that slides down it.

3rd/4th – participated in a walk around the room to 5 different stations, writing information on post it notes about weather and weather tools.

5th grade – Rescue device and rescue carrier challenge  using items from our MakerSpace.  This engineering design challenge emphasized the importance of teamwork to complete the finished product.

Holiday STEAM

Kindergarten – Design a boat for the gingerbread man to get across the river

The gingerbread man is crossing the river safely!

1st grade – create a trap to catch the gingerbread man

Gingerbread Man Trap

3rd Grade – Parachute for Santa

Parachute for santa trying to hit the target

4th Grade – Do you want to build a snowman? How tall is it?

Thanksgiving STEAM

Kindergarten STEAM – Design a hideout for a turkey

Turkey hideout

1st Grade STEAM – Design a dinner table for Thanksgiving dinner

3rd grade STEAM – Design a float for a parade

4th Grade – Design a trap for a turkey

5th grade – Design a marble run maze for the turkey (marble) to go through

Keva Planks

Students in all grades enjoy working with Keva Planks. Some classes used a 2D picture to make a 3D creation. Some classes designed their own plan using the engineering design process and then created their 3D version. Some classes made a plan in their notebook, sat back to back with a partner, and followed a plan one of them drew to see if both 3D creations turned out the same. They discovered it is important to add detail in plans so it can be duplicated.
