Updates and this week’s assignment post

Hi Everyone,

Reminder that Chromebook distribution will take place on Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28 from 12 to 3pm both days, near the teacher parking lot and food distribution area off of Horger Street. (Bring your student ID).

I hope that if you were fasting, this weekend wasn’t too difficult for you. I also hope that your first week of the new online learning schedule wasn’t too overwhelming. I know that it’s stressful. I’m right there with you. There’s a saying that goes, “One thing that remains the same is that everything changes.” This has been the theme for this second semester. I’m not feeling discouraged. I know that it’s a challenge and we will face this challenge head on.

Just as we had put out our schedules of meeting with students, online video chat requirements for classes, we unfortunately have to change. Per Dr. Maleyko and the Executive Board, we are no longer able to use Google Meet or Google Hangouts to video chat during our class times each week, until further notice. If you read his statements that he put out on Twitter and his blog, it was due to students who violated the district’s technology guidelines policy. Therefore, I won’t be able to schedule video conferencing at this time.

You will still be able to connect with me through email. I will still be posting assignments, updates and information here on the blog, and through email and Remind.

My policy will continue to be to respond to emails within 24 hours. If there is something that requires a more in depth discussion or conversation, we will try to work something out.

Your assignment for the week is as follows (the assignments are due by midnight Sunday, May 2).

For this week:

  1. You are going to start a new Google doc for the journal entries beginning with today’s date (April 27). (All of the entries that we have done the past month will be stored on your Google drive, but you’re going to start fresh with this one).
  2. You are going to call the Google doc “Last Name First Name ID Journal Entries for the Week of April 27”.
  3. The first thing you are going to type the date as the heading (NOT the header). 27 April 2020.
  4. Press enter once.
  5. You will begin your journal entry. Begin paragraphs with a tab, and then a capital letter. Use complete sentences, and proper punctuation.
  6. CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND PROOFREAD YOUR WORK!!
  7. Put your name and ID number in the footer.
  8. When you get to the end of your entry, press enter once, and then click on Insert Page Break.
  9. Your new page will be the entry for the next day (28 April 2020).

You will do this for each journal entry. By midnight Sunday, you will be submitting a 5 page document (each page is a journal entry for the week). You will be graded on all of these numbered items.

For your planning purposes:

I will respond during office hours Mondays and Fridays (between 11-2; you will need to be patient. I will get to them during that time, but may not be the instant you send the email).

Ramadan Mubarak

I didn’t want this day to go by without me wishing you a blessed Ramadan month. I know it won’t be the same without the big family gatherings, but hopefully we will still enjoy all of the blessings this month with will bring us.

Letter from the Superintendent

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, due to the irresponsibility of several students in the district, we will be unable to conduct Google Meets/Hangouts. See the link below from Dr. Malyeko.

I’m not sure how we will get around this one so just continue to read the blog posts and your emails for updates.

If you still need a chromebook…

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share this information with you if you are still in need of a chromebook.

Chromebook distribution will take place on Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28 from 12 to 3pm both days, near the teacher parking lot and food distribution area off of Horger Street.

New Week, New Plan

Well, as you all have probably heard, our district is implementing a new remote learning plan to take us through the rest of the school year. There are a lot parts to the plan. You can take a look at it on the district’s website at www.dearbornschools.org.

Please click on the following link and listen to the message from Mrs. Alcodray:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/19Kdr-ECZgQcXDqFbPfsBaKkCIkFDws6/view

Fordson takes the district plan and makes it specific to our needs. It includes the schedule of meetings and how you will be graded.

I know you will have questions. Please read the link about the Fordson plan and the schedule. We will meet for Google Hangouts on Wednesdays from 1:00-1:40. You MUST participate in these Google Hangouts as one of the two assignments you will get for the week. (The second is the work required and assigned for the week as well). Some of the assignments will have multiple parts to them, some will only have one. You must submit your assignments/completed tasks by midnight Sunday of each week. Your grades will be updated by the following Friday.

To access the Google Hangouts for each week, you must do the following:

  1. In a web browser, enter https://meet.google.com.
  2. Click Join or start a meeting.
  3. Enter the name “Ferris CompApps.”
  4. Student Etiquette Tips (how you should conduct yourself in the Google Hangout:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iX37v3QiH_Mo1zQgcGa4DX3X6HEb2Y6quiUqXzZU3O8/edit?usp=sharing

Your assignment for the week is as follows (the assignments are due by midnight Sunday, April 26).

NOTE: Make sure you read these directions. They are different than what we have been doing with the journal entries in the past:

TYPING.COM

Directions will follow and we will discuss this more in the Hangout on Wednesday.

I’m not piling on the work. This is a learning experience for all of us and it’s going to take a minute for us to get adjusted to the new schedule. Things will change a little next week and the assignments will be a little bit different.

I would like to get more feedback from you all, but that will take place on Wednesday.

Email me if you have questions.

For your planning purposes:

I will respond during office hours Mondays and Fridays (between 11-2; you will need to be patient. I will get to them during that time, but may not be the instant you send the email). If necessary, we can have individual video chats to discuss if the email is not sufficient.

It’s Friday…and it’s snowing in April!

Snow day today…and we’re schooling from home! What a nice (maybe) surprise to wake up to. Guess it’s a good thing we’re staying indoors!

Well, this week seemed to go by pretty quick. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, but I’m glad it’s Friday. A funny story for youn(a lighter moment in these crazy times)…

My daughter was doing the laundry and asked what she should do with the fitted sheets for her bed. She said she didn’t know how to fold them. I told her to set them aside and I’ll take care of it. Then I thought again and said that it would be a great teachable moment. I told her to Google “how to fold a fitted sheet.” She did and was surprised that it was the first option in the menu items. I was in the kitchen and all I could hear was the yelling and screaming from the frustration. I was laughing to the point I couldn’t breathe! She finally came out of her room and said she was never going to change her sheets again because this was too complicated (she will be changing her sheets…that’s not an option!)

Well, my sister came to the rescue and showed her how to fold it. My sister inherited the weird things that people can do gene from my mom (Allah yerhama). She folded it perfectly and my daughter was going crazy! I told my daughter to email her life skills teacher and tell her about the torture I was putting her through!

So, today’s assignment is just to answer the attendance question. No journal entry for today. We’ll start fresh on Monday. Let me know if you have any questions:

What day is it!?

Hi Everyone,

I’m sure you were worried about the fact that I didn’t post yesterday’s assignment/attendance check in question, right?! Are you noticing that all of the days are running together and you can never remember which day of the week it is lately!? I’m sick of my phone so I don’t even want to check it, and then when I look at the calendar, I don’t even know which day I’m supposed to be looking at!!

I’m missing having some sort of schedule to follow to kind of keep me in line. Breakfast has become lunch, lunch is dinner, and dinner is a midnight snack! I’ll be working on things and realize that it’s already 8 p.m. and I haven’t even had a cup of coffee!

I hope you are all doing alright and that your families are healthy and safe. I’m not going to post an assignment for yesterday (4/15). That will just be a free day. Today and tomorrow, I’m just going to post an attendance question for you all to check in.

The district is working on a plan for how the rest of the semester is going to, and we are working on getting the details so that we can provide them to you. I know many of you are asking questions about grades and assignments and such. Once I get those answers, I will pass them on to you.

I will say this. Beginning next week:

  • we will have scheduled Google Hangout meetings/”office hours” so that we can touch base, discuss any work, and for me to answer any questions you may have. I know that neither you or I want to spend all day, every day on the computer, so I will come up with a schedule that works for all of us.
  • I will be reworking the way assignments are turned in. I’m sure you’re being bombarded with emails from all of your teachers each day and it gets overwhelming. I can barely keep up with all of the emails I get. I want to try and reduce that for both of us, so I’m working on that as well.

Here is your attendance question for the day:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfzIvLfoOMVlqQIAT19KFzu0H-4DUo60w8gvC17f_yAHocnqQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Let me know if you have any questions. We are in this together and while I’m not crazy about how this semester is playing out, we will figure it out the best we can.

Today’s Work and Survey Question

Good Morning Everyone! I hope you are all doing well after the crazy wind we had yesterday. I dreamt that my backyard looked like the tornado scene from the Wizard of Oz! (If you’ve never watched this classic, you NEED to!!)

After going through the over 200 emails I had yesterday, I began working on my basement…again! We only use our basement for storage and wow, does it store!! Students, if you’re parents are taking this time to organize and clean the house…THANK THEM! HELP THEM! Do your part and get rid of stuff that you haven’t used in a while. Make a donation pile so that when the donation centers re-open, someone else can benefit from the things that you are no longer using. I can’t believe how much stuff my family has accumulated over the years (18 years married with kids and stuff from when my husband and I were kids). I think I made a bigger mess than I started with yesterday, so I’ll be continuing that project again today.

Here’s today’s attendance question:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf8oDs90lL_24Xn7lOj-iiERgTqbbbjSYMsTDXrtSwtRxgYfA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Your journal entry for today (4/14) will be due tomorrow. Make sure that you’re following the guidelines that I posted in the first few blog posts (if you need to, you can go on the blog and scroll through all of the postings and read them: https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/ferrisca

Let me know if you have any questions.

Back at it!

Hi Everyone,

Hope you were able get some rest over the spring break. It was really nice not to check emails, or even be on the computer. I spent a lot of time with my girls and family, cooking, baking, and tackling my basement (this is a project that has been on my to do list for YEARS!!) I still have a ways to go, but I now have a path to walk.

I hope everyone is still staying safe and healthy. I hope you were able to get outside on the nice weather days that we had. I hope that you stayed away from the news and just be able to be with your families and enjoy each other’s company.

Now that we are “back” from spring break, we are back to the work. I still don’t have answers on how things are going to go for the rest of the year. Hopefully we’ll get some answers soon. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the unknown.

Your assignment for today is to

1) Complete the following survey (due by 11:59 tonight)

https://forms.gle/Zmd4MN2PUY14xkJc7

2) Write your journal entry for today’s date (this is due tomorrow). (The best time to write these journal entries is before you go to bed, or first thing in the morning). Make sure you refer back to earlier blog posts on what to include in them and how to format them.

Be on the lookout for Remind texts scheduling a Google hangout meeting later this week or early next week (hopefully that I can answer questions).

I still have the test that you guys took the week we got out of school that needs to be graded and included in the gradebook.

If you have any other questions, make sure you’re emailing me from your school email. If I don’t respond within 24 hours, please send it again. It might have gotten lost in the 100s of emails I’m getting a day now that we are online!

SPRING BREAK WEEK

Hi Everyone,

Well, I think we have hit a record…two days of sunshine!! A little chilly today but I still managed to get some fresh air and Vitamin D.

There will be no assignments for today other than the attendance question that was posted. You will not need to do a journal entry for today’s date (4/3). We will start fresh after spring break.

We have all been a little (or a lot) stressed these last couple of weeks with the changes to our daily lives. With the spring break week ahead, take the time to spend time with your families.

I will not be signing on to check my email, blog, or remind during this spring break. If you’re trying to reach out to me, know that I will not be responding until Monday, April 13, when we are back online for school.
