We made it!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to make sure that I communicated with all of you one last time before we officially started our summer (which if we were in school would have been a half day!)

Perfect weather today to be able to just take a breath and reflect on the year and all of the craziness.

Like all of you, this is not how I expected this year to go. It was a struggle, but we made it through.

I enjoyed reading your journal entries, and getting more insight on your lives, getting to know you as people, not just students. While I’m bummed that we didn’t make it through the curriculum and for you to gain the knowledge of computer apps so that you can use them in the future, I do hope that you learned something.

My hopes for you into the summer and in the future:

I hope that you gained a little something that you can take with you next year and beyond.

I hope that this summer is the time off that you need to just relax. With things opening up, hopefully somewhat back to normal, we can feel human again.

I hope that you continue to learn. We weren’t crazy about online learning, sitting in front of computer all day; I would even venture to say that we got sick of our phones, too. Read books, draw pictures, have conversations, make something (follow a recipe, create a menu), write! Continue your journal entries for yourselves. Some of you have natural writing talents. Some of you shared your drawings with me, or decorating ideas, and you have true talent. Do something out of your comfort zone. You won’t even realize that you’re learning something, but everything is a learning experience, positive or negative. Think about and reflect on that. Do something not because you expect something out of it, but because it makes you feel better.

I hope that you don’t lose the learning you did this year. Two months of remote learning, you were still keeping your minds occupied. Don’t lose that. Three months of summer, make sure you still learn. Be cautious, be aware, be informed. Make your decisions based on that, not on fear.

I hope that you reflect on what’s really important to you. Yesterday I was having a conversation with someone and she said, “Life is too short, and you really have to put things into perspective.” Technology, phones, video games, material things, can only provide temporary fulfillment and you will eventually get bored with it. Do things to help you become a better human. This time at home gave us all a chance to think and really do some soul searching. I hope you do.

Know this…despite how class started off, progressed, ended up, you can always reach out to me if you have any questions or need any advice. I have always said that you may not like the answer, but you’ll always get the truth.

I hope that we are back in the fall, in the classroom, back to normal. As humans, we need the human interaction. Technology shouldn’t replace that. Even though we enjoyed not having to get up at the crack of dawn, there are so many more benefits to being in school rather than doing online work.

Enjoy your summer!

This is it! The last week! Assignments, Grades, Parent Survey, and anything else you’ve been asking about!

Well…we made it to the last week of school for the 19-20 school year. What a way to end it, right!?

I don’t want to get all wordy and write something so long that you’re not going to read anyway. But I do want to say a few things. Please make sure you read all of the way through.

This has been a struggle…for you, for your families, for us, for me. We have all done our best to try and make it through the best way we know. Never in my lifetime did I think that we would face what we have these last few months. While we may not have seen eye to eye on things, I’m proud of you for making it through. I said in the beginning that we are in this together, and we are. Trying to keep things as “normal” in a not-so-normal situation was definitely a challenge.

That being said, this is the last week. You will NOT have to complete journal entries for this week in the normal manner. THERE WILL BE TWO (2) THINGS THAT YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE BY WEDNESDAY, JUNE, 10 FOR ME:

  1. End of the year/semester wrap up: You will need to write one more thing for me. I want you to complete an end of the year/semester write up. I usually ask my students at the end of the year to provide me an evaluation/insight in how the semester in class went for you. You will set it up the same way that you did for all of the journal entries.
    • You are going to start a new Google doc
    • Click on the top left where it says Untitled Document. Click on that one time and change it to “Last Name First Name ID End of the Year Wrap Up”. (This is the only acceptable title. Anything else will not be accepted).
    • In the document itself, at the top left, where the cursor is (not in the header), you are going to type: 8-6-2020 or 8 June 2020.
    • Press enter once.
    • You will begin your write up. Begin paragraphs with a tab, and then a capital letter. Use complete sentences, and proper punctuation.
    • Begin with an introduction
    • Answer all of the questions below and add whatever else you would like.
    • CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND PROOFREAD YOUR WORK!! (Tools menu – Spelling & Grammar – Spelling and Grammar Check)
    • Put your name and ID number in the footer on the left side (Insert menu- Headers & Footers – Footer).
    • Select the line where you typed the date.
    • Click on Format menu – Paragraph Styles – Heading 1 – Apply ‘Heading 1’
    • When you finish the write up, share it with me (click on the share button in the top right and then enter in my email address: ferrisy@dearbornschools.org) so that I receive it.
  • What worked well, and why?
  • What would you do differently, and why?
  • What do you think of the class, and why? (This about being in the class and things we did prior to the shut down).
  • Is there anything that you would want me to consider doing differently for future reference, and why? (Think about being in the class and things we did prior to the shut down for this one)
  • Your overall experience of the remote/online learning. Would you want to do it again? Would you prefer to be in class 100%? Would you prefer to have online 100%? Would you want a split schedule (some days online, some days in school)? Explain why for each of your choices.
  • You can include criticism, just don’t be rude. Not everything is positive, but you can always take a negative and make suggestions with it.

2.WEEKLY CHECK IN: ON WEDNESDAY, send me an email letting me know you’re checking in. Please compose the email correctly:

  1. Subject line: Check in 6-10-2020
  2. Greeting: Dear Ms. Ferris,
  3. Paragraph/sentence letting me know you’re checking in and anything else you wanted to say.
  4. Closing (Sincerely,)
  5. Your Name (first and last)

GRADES:

I’ve been getting a lot of emails about grades and the gradebook. Yes, I know that your grades may look like they are “not moving.” They are moving. Unfortunately, they aren’t moving as much as they would be if the assignments were being completed in class because the point values would be more. Your percentage is moving, while the grade may not.

The district plan for this shut down is graded differently than what the normal grading scale would look like, so at the end of all this, I have to enter grades in manually.

As I explained at the start of all this, the grade before the shut down is the starting point.

  1. If you were passing before the shut down, and doing MOST/ALL of the required work throughout the shut down, you will receive a G on your report card for the final grade (this gives you credit for the class without it affecting your GPA in a negative way). You will NOT see this in the gradebook as I will have to go in manually and enter the letters.
  2. If you were failing before the shutdown:
    • and you were doing MOST/ALL of the required work and check ins during this shut down, you will also receive a G on your report card for the final grade, instead of the E.
    • and you did minimum/NO required work and check ins during this shut down, I will review each student’s work and determine if you will receive credit (G) or no credit (N). (This would be a good time to make sure you do the assignment I posted today to make sure that you at least did SOMETHING) since there is no make up work that can be done for this class.
    • An “E” in the gradebook doesn’t necessarily mean that you will fail computer applications. There are a lot of factors to consider. Make sure you do the assignment posted for this week if you’re not sure and worried!!

Credit means that you will not be behind credits for graduation and you WILL NOT have to repeat the class (which is good but not because you didn’t get all of the fun, useful information that should be taught in computer applications!)

No credit means that you will have to take the class during summer school or in the upcoming school year(s) to make up for it.

Please do not email me and ask me what your grade is, or if you’re passing or failing. As I have stated above, make sure you do the assignment posted for this week if you are worried and not sure. Do it well, do it completely, and do it like your grade depended on it, right!?!?

PARENT SURVEY

Lastly, here is a survey that your PARENTS need to take (not you) regarding different situations that may happen in the fall.

For translation assistance, parents may call 313-580-2532 Monday June 8th through Friday June 12th 8:30a.m. through 4:30p.m.

This week’s work

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I apologize for not sending a reminder text for the journal entries to be due by Sunday. Hopefully you remembered to get them in on time.

We are in the home stretch. This is the last week where I will give a formal assignment for you to complete.

WEEKLY CHECK IN: ON WEDNESDAY, send me an email letting me know you’re checking in. Please compose the email correctly:

  1. Subject line: Check in 6-3-2020
  2. Greeting: Dear Ms. Ferris,
  3. Paragraph/sentence letting me know you’re checking in and anything else you wanted to say.
  4. Closing (Sincerely,)
  5. Your Name (first and last)

JOURNAL ENTRIES

Some of you are doing a great job following the directions given for your journal entries each week. Some of you think that if you just put something on paper, that’s going to work (it’s not). Here is your assignment for the week is as follows (the assignments are due by midnight Sunday, June 7).

For this week:

  1. You are going to start a new Google doc for the journal entries beginning with today’s date (June 1). (All of the entries that we have done the past month will be stored on your Google drive, but you’re going to start fresh with this one).
  2. Click on the top left where it says Untitled Document. Click on that one time and change it to “Last Name First Name ID Journal Entries for the Week of June 6”. (This is the only acceptable title. Anything else will not be accepted).
  3. In the document itself, at the top left, where the cursor is (not in the header), you are going to type: 1-6-2020 or 1 June 2020.
  4. Press enter once.
  5. You will begin your journal entry. Begin paragraphs with a tab, and then a capital letter. Use complete sentences, and proper punctuation. Don’t forget that you’re writing about your day, your thoughts, what you went through for the day. Make sure you provide details. I read them and make comments; I ask questions. If I think that you just threw words on paper just to get the assignment done, and didn’t think it through, the assignment is not complete. There is always something to write about. Even though our days are repetitive, there is always something that you can write about that makes it different from the day before.
  6. CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND PROOFREAD YOUR WORK!! (Tools menu – Spelling & Grammar – Spelling and Grammar Check)
  7. Put your name and ID number in the footer on the left side (Insert menu- Headers & Footers – Footer).
  8. Highlight the date.
  9. Click on Format menu – Paragraph Styles – Heading 1 – Apply ‘Heading 1’
  10. Click at the end of your entry (after the last word/punctuation mark). Press enter once. Click on Insert menu – Break – Page Break.
  11. Your new page will be the entry for the next day (2-6-2020).
  12. Start with step 3 for each of the journal entries for the week. You just don’t need to do the footer after the first day because it will be included on each page for the week.

You will do this for each journal entry. By midnight Sunday, you will be submitting a 5 page document (each page is a journal entry for the week). You will be graded on all of these numbered items.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS FOR JOURNAL ENTRIES, you can use any of the following topics.

  • You can write about what you did all day. Tell me, in detail, what your day was like, from the time that you woke up until the time you went to bed. Include all details. If you ate breakfast, for example, tell me what you ate, if you prepared it, did you wash the dishes afterwards, etc.
  • You can write about your feelings throughout the day.
  • Describe your favorite things about yourself. What makes you unique?
  • Do you think students should receive grades for school work done at home since attending actual school has been canceled? Why or why not?
  • Make a goal in the morning and reflect back on it at night. Write about whether you accomplished the goal, and if so, what helped you. If you didn’t accomplish your goal, what kept you from doing so. Reflect on what you could do differently next time.
  • Write about a time when you thought a situation was worse than it really was.
  • Is it easier to learn online or in the classroom? Write to support your position and why the other side isn’t easier.
  • Who faces more pressure: boys or girls? Explain both sides.
  • What is the worst chore to have? Why?

This Week’s Assignment: Answer a question to provide me some feedback, journal entry, and weekly check in…and one more thing at the end of this post

Well, we are one week down for fasting, and two weeks into the district learning plan. I hope that you are working on some kind of a schedule so that it’s not too overwhelming. At this point, I think we are all missing the comforts of life (hair salons, nail salons, grocery shopping and actually finding the things we need, spending time with our friends and family for iftar), but hopefully, we are all safe and healthy and all of that will come in time.

QUESTION/FEEDBACK: please answer the following question. I need some feedback as far as sending you information/reminds. I don’t want to bombard you with emails and Reminds, but I want to make sure that you remember to do the work that is required so that I don’t have to document that you need someone to contact your home to remind you to do the work.

You will do this for each journal entry. By midnight Sunday, you will be submitting a 5 page document (each page is a journal entry for the week). You will be graded on all of these numbered items.

SUNDAY, MAY 10 is Mother’s Day. You don’t have to go out and get your mom/aunts/grandmothers/mother figure in your life anything, but just make sure she knows she is appreciated. Make her a card like you did in elementary school, help her with things around the house, make dinner for her this time around to give her a break. She’ll thank you if she feels like it truly comes from the heart!

Weekly Check In

Hi Everyone,

I was thinking about different ways to have you check in with me since we aren’t participating in video chats for that component. Since we are supposed to meet on Wednesdays from 1:00-1:40, I will still provide that the check ins take place on Wednesdays. Send me a quick email with “Check in” in the subject line and for the message, compose your email with a greeting, telling me that you’re checking in, and anything else you feel like sharing, and then closing the email.

Obviously this is coming up today so I will give you until Sunday night to complete this check in (different from the journal entries).

Next week, I may do something a little different, but nothing overwhelming. Just keep checking the blog and the remind texts.

Stay safe and be well!
