8.5 Pharaoh Hatshepsut: Promoter of Egyptian Trade

  • Pharaoh during the New Kingdom (1473-1458) – (haht-SHEP- soot)
  • Egypt’s first female pharaoh- demanded the same respect as male pharaohs
  • First shared power with male relatives
  • Hatshepsut dressed in men’s clothing- even wore a fake beard
  • She spread stories that her father was a god
  • Encouraged trade, which helped spread Egyptian influence along the Nile River and nearby Middle Eastern lands
  • Built the great temple at Dayr al-Bahri- 200 sphinx statues placed at its entrance
  • A sphinx is mythical creature with a lion’s body and the head of a human
  • Those who cannot answer its riddle suffer a fate typical in such mythological stories, as they are killed and eaten by this ravenous monster

8.6 Pharaoh Ramses II: Military Leader and Master Builder

  • Ruled from about 1290 to 1224 B.C.E.- during the New Kingdom
  • Called Ramses the Great- one of the most famous pharaohs
  • He had over 100 wives and more than 100 children- Nefertari
  • Ramses had hundreds of statues of himself erected- 60 feet high
  • Story has it he captained an army at age 10- fearless soldier
  • A peacemaker- singed the world’s first peace treaty with the Hittites
  • Ramses ordered more temples and monuments to be built than other pharaoh
  • His mummy is one of the best preserved bodies ever found
