Our Daily Living Skill for the week is Sweeping. Read through the attached PDF with your family and then practice sweeping the floor in your home or even outside.

The recipe of the week is Swedish Meatballs from the News 2 You article. I have linked it below. It can also be found in the article Greta Thunberg. Maybe your family has their own recipe for meatballs, what makes your meatballs different? How are the recipes similar? Use the ingredient list, do you have any of the ingredients in your refrigerator or pantry?

Thursday: Leisure & Recreation (OT Therapy focused)

Friday: Leisure & Recreation (Movement & Mindfulness focused)

As always, if you have any questions or want to connect, please feel free to call or text me at 313-451-1251.

I miss you all so much! This week I was able to connect with many of you. If you have not returned my email or phone call, please do so as soon as possible. I want to hear from you! I have recently updated the tabs in my blog to include the most recent News 2 You articles, resources from our Speech & Language Pathologist and OT, and I have linked our specials teachers blogs. Please check them out.

I hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy. These past couple of weeks we have all had to change up our routines. Routines are important because they give us a sense of security and help us feel safe. We learn what is expected of us when we follow a routine. The predictability of a routine will help our young feel more confident which will lead to independence. Our classroom has many routines that we follow throughout the day. One very important part of our day is our Morning Meeting. After breakfast, we take the time to review our schedule for the day, look at the calendar, check the weather, answer the question of the day, and we move. Go noodle is our favorite website for movement, but we also find easy workouts on youtube. During this time, please think about keeping a routine. I have linked a short article here.

This week Young Adult Families should be receiving a packet of familiar activities that you can work on at home. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions. I have asked that you please send me your most current email to stay connected. Remind is also a great way to keep in touch. Please see the tab above to access instructions on how to sign up for Remind.

My goal for all of my students is to increase independence. In the classroom, we provide opportunities for students to practice skills with support. While at home, please consider using this time to reinforce that independence. Including your Young Adult in everyday living activities will encourage independence.

Some everyday activities that our students are familiar with include:

  • Laundry- sorting clothes by color, loading the washer, measuring the soap, turning it on, changing over to the dryer, folding, matching socks, putting it away, carrying the basket, etc.
  • Cooking- choosing what to eat, finding ingredients, following a recipe, using a microwave, measuring ingredients, make a simple meal (sandwich, cereal, leftovers), open packaged foods.
  • Cleaning- vacuum, dust, wipe tables or counters, wash dishes or load dishwasher, take out the trash.

Any activity that you typically complete throughout the day, please consider sharing with your young adult. Because our students abilities range, so should our activities. For example, maybe your young adult can pull a bag of trash out from the can and take it outside. Maybe they can open the lid to the large trash can outside. Maybe they can show you where to find the trash bags. Maybe they can open a bag to put in the can. Maybe they can throw something away, or place something in recycling. Engaging with our young adults while completing our everyday tasks will encourage independence and learning.

Below I have linked several resources/activities that we use in the classroom. Please consider spending a few minutes each day exploring the activities listed.

https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/EDLALL/ GCF global provides web based instruction on many everyday life activities including using money, cooking, time, and work skills.
