Elements of Plot and Point of View Test Friday, November 1st, 2019
We will finish our narrative unit this week with an application test that requires students to apply their knowledge of the elements of a plot diagram, types of conflicts and point of view to an unfamiliar narrative text.
Students will take a practice test on Thursday in order to become familiar with the test format.
Students should be familiar with :
Types of conflicts: External (character vs character, character vs. society, character vs nature) and Internal (character vs self)
Points of View:
First-person (I, me, my)
Second-person (you, your)
Third-person (he, she, they)
Know the three types of Third-person: omniscient, limited, objective

What’s Happening in ELA
Students have been learning about the structure of narrative text and the parts of a plot diagram. We just finished reading Ray Bradbury’s ALL SUMMER IN A DAY and have been identifying the parts of the plot. Some of the vocabulary students have been learning includes:
protagonist, antagonist, exposition, conflict (internal and external), rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, point of view
Morning Bell Work
Each morning students focus on various word parts (prefixes, Greek/Latin root words) as bell work. The meaning of each word part is discussed and students must use a word containing the word part in the context of a sentence.
QUIZ
THIS FRIDAY, students will have a quiz on the prefixes and root words we’ve been discussing. Students were given a list of root words to use as a study guide. Additionally, the quiz will include some prefixes and vocabulary from ALL SUMMER IN A DAY listed below:

quad-four
All Summer in a Day Vocabulary
slacken- to slow or lessen
resilient- flexible, bendable or someone who doesn’t give up
frail- weak or delicate
apparatus- a device or equipment used for a specific purpose

tumultuously- in a wild, disorderly way

ZOO FIELD TRIP PERMISSION SLIPS DUE
This week students received permission slips to attend a field trip to the Detroit Zoo next Monday, September 23rd. Sixth graders will be joined by their eighth-grade W.E.B. leaders on this trip. The cost is $3.00 and should be returned with a signed permission slip by THIS Friday. Students will also need a disposable lunch on the day of the trip.
OPEN HOUSE THIS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th, 2019
BOOK TALKS DUE MONDAY SEPTEMBER 9th, 2019
At the end of last year, all 5th grade (Dearborn) students were instructed to read at least 3 books over the summer in order to complete a ‘book talk’ upon entering 6th grade. Today students were given an example of the 7 elements that they must include in their informal ‘book talk’. Students will deliver their mini presentation to their table groups of 3-5 students next Monday. The elements that must be included are:
Title, author, character description, setting, recommendation, quote from the book to share aloud and a student drawn illustration representing a favorite part from the book.
The only element that will be turned in, will be the illustration. Students can plan their book talk using any format with which they are comfortable.
Some ideas discussed today (but not required) included:
note cards, a piece of paper with bullet points, a poster board, printed slides etc….Again, these items are just to help the student remember what to say during the presentation and will not be turned in.
