Food Schedule Change

March 27, 2020 by Zeina Jebril

On Monday, March 30, Dearborn Public Schools is changing the format of its free student meal distributions.

Meals will now be distributed three times a week, instead of five.

Meals will generally be distributed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. However, the week of April 6 to 10, meals will be handed out on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Friday, April 10, is Good Friday and a holiday for District staff.

Fewer meal distributions should make it easier for families to get the food while reducing the risk of virus exposure for both our families and our staff. Each food bag will still contain both breakfast, lunch and milk for a child under 18, but now the bag will have food for each day until the next distribution.

The grab-and-go meals will continue to be handed out between 10 a.m. and noon at the same seven schools.  The Dearborn Schools student does not have to attend that school to be eligible for a meal. A designated person can pick up meals for multiple children.  The student does not need to be present.

The distribution sites are Fordson, Dearborn and Edsel Ford high schools; McCollough/Unis; Salina Intermediate; Smith Middle School; and Woodworth Middle School.

The program is allowing the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food. The meals are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s School Lunch Program. Dearborn Public Schools already used the federal program to offer all kindergarten to 12th grade students free lunch and breakfast on school days.

Meal distributions will continue through the state-ordered school closure.  Currently, schools are set to reopen on April 14.

Social-Emotional Support

Amid the recent shutdown of Dearborn Public Schools, we would like to ensure that the social and emotional supports for students are available. The emotional impact of an emergency on a child depends on a child’s characteristics, developmental ages, and experiences. Thus, not all children respond to a crisis in the same way. In addition to school social workers providing resources for families and students that they service, Dearborn Public Schools will make a hotline available for students and/or parents who are struggling in coping with COVID-19 issues that might cause anxiety, fear, and stress in our families. The hotline will be supported by 4-6 staff members daily. Counselors, Psychologists, and School Social Workers will be afforded the opportunity to sign up for a time and day of the week they would be available to support. Additional Information regarding the hotline:

  • Disclaimer and parental consent must be provided before speaking to student or family
  • The voice recording will state if it is an emergency, families must hang up and dial 911
  • Parents can call 313-827-8500 or email dss@dearbornschools.org if assistance is needed
  • If a follow-up session is necessary, it will be scheduled by the appropriate provider

We want to thank you for your dedication to our students and families.  Just as teachers are committed to the academic welfare of students, we are equally committed to their social-emotional welfare in order to feel safe and able to learn.

Breakfast and Lunch Distribution at Smith

Beginning March 23rd, the district will be adding an additional breakfast and lunch distribution site at O.L. Smith.

Also, please stay tuned for an announcement forthcoming regarding Chromebook distribution to our students who do not have access to technology. Once that plan is shared with us, we will post the information here.

Thank you to those students who have jumped right into their online learning and those who have picked up their packets. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are here to help!

Online Learning

Thank you for checking our ELA blog. Due to the recent school closure mandated by Governor Whitmer, teachers at Smith Middle School are working to provide weekly lessons to our students via online learning options. Students are asked to check their school email accounts and Google Classroom regularly for detailed information on class assignments and due dates.

Reading Article-Weekly Homework

Using the results of recent NWEA reading scores, many students are being assigned a weekly news article to target specific reading skills that were identified as a weakness on the NWEA. test These articles will be passed out on Mondays and are due at the end of the week on Friday. Students MUST annotate the text (show their thinking by writing in the margins) in order to get full credit and answer the 4 comprehension questions correctly.

Thank you for encouraging your child to complete these weekly reading assignments at home!
