***5th Grade Mall!!!***

5th Grade MALL!

May 21, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The fifth grade classes are participating in a token economy.  Students earn “mall money” by completing homework, exhibiting great behavior, and demonstrating leadership qualities here at Snow School.  We make it more exciting by having the students buy and sell goods and services.  We call this event “The Mall” and ask that each student think of something to sell at the mall.

All the goods or services sold must be hand created.  In addition, students are not permitted to sell food or drinks.  We have challenged the students to create a good or service in an original way.  We want to eliminate the purchasing of goods at a real store to sell at the mall.  Students from other grades, who qualify to attend the mall, based on their behavior for the month of May, will be purchasing items from the 5th graders.  Only5th graders will create an original good or service.

Our mall will take place on Friday, June 7th , 2019  from 2:00-3:15 in the school cafeteria.

In Social Studies class, the students are developing a business plan and will be working on a script for a 30 second commercial to advertise their good or service.  We will broadcast commercials, to the school, a few days before the mall activity.

Please help us make this activity a success by assisting your child with selecting/developing a good or service to sell at our mall.  We ask that you do not spend any “real” money on your student’s product.  However, if you must, we ask that you greatly limit the amount.

The use of a classroom token economy has been proven to be effective in teaching economic principles to students.  Thank you for your support with this endeavor.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Here is a list of some, but not all, previous goods/services sold at the mall:

Services: Skill games, photography booth, play an instrument, and more!

Goods/Crafts: Bead jewelry, hand drawn pictures, string jewelry, ornaments, distorted photos (student took pictures and distorted them to create funny images), origami (paper folding), original stories, hand paintings, how-to books, decorations made from recycled goods, hand-made picture frames, original games, original poetry, etc.

These are just a few ideas…get creative!

ALL GOODS AND/OR SERVICES MUST BE APPROVED BY A TEACHER BEFORE SELLING.

DO NOT SELL: SLIME, PUTTY, Play-Doh, FOOD, LIVE ANIMALS, lava lamps, hair coloring, nail painting, face painting, hair-braiding, and stress-balls.

Sincerely,

Mr. DeSantis

Ms. Sherlock
