January 27th

This week we will be taking the Module 3 Assessment for math. Students will begin/complete the review tomorrow, check it together on Wednesday and take the assessment on Thursday. Lots of adding and subtracting fractions in story problems.

Students also have a Jamestown Quiz tomorrow with a review tonight. Also, a spelling test tomorrow.

We are finishing up NWEA testing this week with the math. Overall, the students have been doing very well and working diligently! Most scores have gone up, up, up! Ask your child how he/she did on the reading and language parts so far.

Pennies for Patients Fundraiser: DuVall is raising money to help beat cancer. Today, your child will bring home a box. Please place any money collected in this box. You can also set up an online donation page or donate electronically. The link below will take you to our class page. https://events.lls.org/pages/mi/DuvallElementarySchool-2020/cranka

Reminder: I’ve noticed lots of sleepiness from the kids lately. Literally, eyes closing during the day while working. Please set and enforce that bedtime, 9:00 or before with no electronics and have your child eat breakfast. Those 2 things really do make a difference. Thanks in advance!!

Carnival Games and Report Cards

With the excitement of our first carnival games building day, I completely forgot to pass out report cards. I sincerely apologize for this mistake. If I wasn’t able to catch your child before they left school, I will give them out Monday. Again, I am so very sorry.

Tutoring Permission Slips

Several students receivedĀ permission slips to attend before school tutoring in either math, reading or both.Ā  Pls. ask your child if he/she received one so that you may sign the permission slip and have it returned by Friday.Ā  Tutoring begins next week!

January 13th

Reminder: We have 1/2 day this Friday, no school next Monday and another 1/2 day on Tuesday. Also, Pancake Dinner is this Wednesday from 5:30-7 and Book Bingo is this Friday starting at 6:00.

Students will take a quiz tomorrow in math over lessons 1-7 which is basically adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and story problems related to that.

We will be taking one of the NWEA assessments this week. Most likely, we will begin it Tuesday and it will be Reading.

Have a great week!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone was able to spend some well-deserved family time together.

I understand that its hard to transition back to school after being off, but many of the students seemed tired today. Please help your child be more successful by setting and enforcing a bedtime (10-12 hours of sleep per night for 10 year olds). No electronics (or even remotes) in the bedroom at bedtime. They are not old enough to have the self control and need YOU to make sure they are getting enough sleep on a regular basis. It does have a huge impact on their ability to focus in school and regulate their emotions as well. Thanks in advance for your help!

This week we begin Module 3 in math (Fractions). This can be difficult so pls. take a look at the homework to see if your child is understanding conceptually what we are doing.

For your planning purposes: The card marking ends a week from this Friday with a 1/2 day on the 17th and no school on the 20th (MLK observed holiday). We will begin NWEA midyear testing in the next couple weeks also.

Hope you have a great week!

Thank you!

Good Morning! I hope that everyone is enjoying their first day of winter break. I have been catching up on the many things I haven’t gotten to recently. I want to take a minute to thank all the parents and students who gave me such thoughtful gifts and/or helped out or donated items the past few weeks. We were super busy but had a ton of fun leading to vacation.

It is my hope that all of you have time to spend together as a nuclear family and hopefully get to see family and friends that you don’t see often. Please take the time to play a game together, bundle up and go for a family walk or watch a family movie together. These experiences and are so important for our children to thrive, and in our busy lives, it is sometimes hard to find time to do these things. Today, is sunny and beautiful so send those kiddos out for awhile, they need the fresh air and the experience of playing outdoors. I, for one, am hoping for snow, but may have to wait until we go to northern Michigan skiing after Christmas. If you plan to be up there, I will be at Boyne mountain, contact me.

I wish everyone a happy and safe winter vacation and I look forward to seeing all of my wonderful, caring and thoughtful students in 2020!

Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Ranka

Last Minute Help Needed

I know its last minute, but I am thinking of making 3-D snowflakes with the class. In order to do this, I would need at least 4 helpers tomorrow, Friday, afternoon at 1:00. Please let me know if you are available to help. I have a backup plan if I can’t get enough volunteers.
