A GIANT thanks to the PTA for donating books to our classroom- we ALL love that!
This week we have a 1/2 day on Friday.
We are finishing up the next section of Math Module 4 and will have a quiz on multiplying fractions/decimals and story problems on Friday.
Spring fever is here and the 5th grade “unease” is beginning to happen, currently, especially with the boys. Please help me help your child stay successful by reminding them to stay focussed and on task while doing their best work. Many are starting to slip and we still have a long way to go until June. Thanks in advance for your help!
As many of you know, the Edsel Ford High School Performing Arts Department will be presenting our production of Disney’s “Freaky Friday – A New Musical” in May 8-9 and 15-16. Mr. Doyle will be opening up our ensemble to students from grades 5-8 who attend one of our Feeder Schools or have siblings at EFHS. There is also one principal role for the younger brother, Fletcher. (Actor to play 7-10 yr old) He must be able to sing and use two different hand puppets. Auditions will be held on Thursday 5 March from 4-6 pm. Interested students who can not attend during that time need to contact me directly (doyler@dearbornschools.org). Audition materials will be taught at the audition. Students should be prepared to read from the script, sing, and dance.Students do NOT need to have previous experience, only a willingness to commit to working on the show and learn.
Mid Module Math tests are coming home today. Please look them over and sign that you saw them. Also, behavior cards need to be signed also.
The Scholastic book fair is all week this week. Students got a paper to show you how to easily help them get the books on their list without having to send in cash. It will also be open during Literacy Night which is this Thursday 5:30-6:30.
I hope that everyone had a wonderful vacation from school and was able to recharge and spend some time together as a family. Below are a few things to note.
Math– Mid Module Assessment is tomorrow and Wednesday. I broke it into 2 parts because it was quite long. Students have part 1 review today and part 2 tomorrow. Pls. take a look at what your child is working on.
Social Studies:
We have completed our unit on colonization. The Unit 3 Assessment, Colonization and Settlement, will be Friday, February 28th. Today, we finished the review. Your child should be using it and their notebook to help them prepare. The assessment will be 24 multiple-choice questions and 1 essay.
Essay: Explain how life in the colonies would have been different if the colonists had not written the Mayflower Compact? Provide at least two examples.
The students will also be doing a colonial project this week. I anticipate that the students will be able to complete the project in class but if not, they will need to complete it over the weekend. The project will be an advertisement to advertise a colony. The end product will be a Tri-fold Pamphlet, Radio Ad or TV Commercial. The assignment and rubric is posted on Google Classroom SS.
Popcorn: We are in charge of popping popcorn on Friday, February 24th. Please let me know if you are able to pop and bag popcorn asap.
Valentine fun will be Friday, at 9:40 in the morning. Students are welcome to bring unnamed Valentines and treats to pass out if they would like to.
Pls. continue to “encourage” your child to work on Zearn each night for 15-25 minutes to keep up with our pace in class. Students who ARE practicing at least 3 times a week are caught up and doing better than those who are doing nothing!
No school February 17-21, see you on February 24th.
Everyone truly enjoyed the Carnival Fair yesterday, thank you to all the parents who supported us by sending in supplies, the games were a big hit and lots of learning took place!
I am looking for a parent to make 28 eight page books by by February 24th. I will send the paper home with your child and you can return the book when they are done. The books are easy to make, you just count out 4 pieces of paper, stagger them and staple at the top. I have included a picture of the finished product below. Please let me know if you are able to help out.
This Wednesday is a late start day. Math tutoring (if your child has it) is Friday this week instead.
Math tests will be coming home on Tuesday. Behavior cards will be coming home today to be signed for our reward. Pls. take a look at your child’s card and the back with details. Questions: Feel free to ask me!
Valentine’s Fun will be Friday, Feb. 14 sometime in the morning. If you would like to send your child with valentines or treats, feel free to. We will be passing them out and playing a couple games, very low key. I do not give a list of names usually due to the fact that it triples our pass out time.
Math Night is tonight from 5:30-6:30!
The students have built carnival games. We will be having a Carnival Game Fair for the 3rd and 4th graders on Thursday, February 6th. It will be in the cafeteria from 2:50-3:15, if you would like to stop by.
Today, we celebrated all the hard work that the students put into the NWEA and John!
John completed Bloom’s Ladder and we are so proud of him! Bloom’s Ladder is a teaching tool that I use to deepen students’ reading comprehension. Each level has 6 reading strategies and there are 6 levels. Each level increases in difficulty and thinking ability. I know there are a couple of student’s right behind John, who will be next?
FYI: I only require 2 reading strategies per week so racing to the top is NOT the objective; high quality, high level thinking and comprehension are. All of the students have been working hard and should be proud of their progress because I am proud of them and each one of them continues to grow as a reader.
I received this information from a parent in our class, so I am passing it onto you. Her daughter, in our class this year, attended the GEE Day last year and really enjoyed it!
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Detroit Section is pleased to announce it’s twelfth annual Girls’ Engineering Exploration (GEE) Day on Saturday, March 21, 2020. This year’s event will be held at the Michigan Science Center from 9AM – 4PM. The free seminar, with lunch provided, is a part of SWE’s continuous effort to educate young women about the endless career opportunities that the engineering field has to offer.
In order to make this seminar a success we are asking 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers and parents/guardians throughout metro Detroit to pass along the information and document included in this email to girls that they believe display interest and enthusiasm in the STEAM subjects. We are striving to reach out and inspire girls that work hard and have the potential to become future engineers. Included in this email is a flyer (GEE Student Flyer 2020) that discusses the activities to be held at the event for the girls. The program is limited to 125 girls, so please encourage students and parents to respond as soon as possible.
Teachers and parents are also invited to attend an informational and interactive session at the same time as the student events. They will be provided with resources and opportunities to further engage their child/student in engineering activities. If teachers and/or parents are interested in attending they can register in the same link provided on the flyer. Lunch is provided and seating is limited.
Registration instructions are included on the flyer. The last date to register for the students, teachers, and parents is Monday, March 2, 2020, but seating is limited so please sign up as soon as possible.
Please pass out the GEE Student Flyer 2020 document to the students you suggest.
