Dear First Grade Families,                                                       2-13-17

Students will begin Unit 6 Math lessons.  The lessons will include learning about fact families; fact triangles; addition; subtraction; measurement; pattern blocks; counting money; and telling time.

Wednesday, February 15, is a late start.

Students will be on mid-winter vacation from February 18 – 26.  Please encourage your child to read during vacation.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.

Report cards for the second report card marking period will be sent home today.  Please sign the envelope and return it to school.

Students will take the Unit 5 Math Test on Tuesday.  Please review the study guide with your child.

I am sending home a study guide for our Social Studies unit on needs and wants.  Please review the study guide with your child.  Students will take the test on Friday.

Our class won the lunchroom behavior challenge.  Students earned a pizza party because they made good behavior choices in the lunchroom.  At lunch on Thursday, February, 9, students will be allowed to have cheese pizza at lunch, if you want your child to participate.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                              1-30-17

I am sending home a study guide for the Unit 5 Math test today.  Students will take the Unit 5 Math Test on Friday.  Please help your child study for the test.

Report cards will be sent home soon.  The NWEA Reading and Math Assessment  scores will also be sent home soon.

I am sending home a reading log for February.  Please make sure your child reads 15 minutes or more daily for homework.  The reading log will be due March 1.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return the booklet.

Students will take the NWEA Reading Test on Thursday.  Again, please make sure your child gets a lot of rest and eats a healthy breakfast.

Friday is a half day of school.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.  It is also the last day of the second report card marking period.  Students will receive their second report card soon and the NWEA Reading and Math test scores will be included.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.  Read 15 minutes or more daily for homework.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                         1-9-17

Happy 2017!  I am looking forward to another great year of learning for students.  I hope everyone had a relaxing vacation.

Please return the reading and math review packets.  We will use them to review for the NWEA reading and math tests that students will take on the computer soon.  Also, please return the reading log.

We are starting Unit 5 math lessons.  The lessons include learning about less than, greater than, and equal to symbols.  Students will also learn about place value; number stories; telling time; counting money; shapes; addition and subtraction.

Reading lessons include folktales, fables, and informational text.  Students retell stories using story maps.

Writing lessons include opinion writing.  Students write their opinion about a topic, write reasons for their opinion and include a closing sentence.

Social Studies lessons are about the study of Economics.  Students learn about consumer needs and wants; goods and services; producers and consumers.

Science lessons continue to focus on weather.  Students learn about different weather conditions and tools used to measure weather.

Reminders:   Read 15 minutes or more daily for homework.  Wear gym shoes on Monday.  Return library books on Friday.

Students will take the Unit 4 Math Test on Tuesday.  Please review the study guide with your child.

On Friday, the last day before vacation, we will have our holiday breakfast.  At the end of the day, we will have time to play games.  Students may bring a game to play.  Please write his or her name on the game.

Wednesday is a late start.

Please make sure your child continues to read 15 minutes or more daily for homework.  Minutes read should be written on the December reading log.  After reading, please have your child use the story map to practice retelling the story.

The Unit 3 Math Test will be sent home today.  Unit 4 lessons will include learning how to read a thermometer; measurement; telling time; shapes; addition; subtraction and counting base ten blocks.

Please make sure your child is recording minutes read daily on the December reading log for homework.  Also, please encourage your child to practice retelling the story aloud after reading by using the story map chart.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                          11-14-16

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

I am sending home a story retelling card that can be used as a part of reading homework.  After reading for homework, students can practice  retelling the story aloud.  They can also describe their favorite part of the story.

Conferences will be held this Wednesday and Thursday.  Students will receive their report cards at this time.  The school book fair will be open Thursday evening.

We have a late start on Wednesday, November 16.

Picture retakes are this Friday, November 18.
