Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return the booklet.

Unit 4 Math lessons will include measurement; shapes; place value; telling time; counting money; story problems; addition and subtraction.

Please continue to make sure your child is reading 15 minutes or more for homework and recording minutes read on the December Reading Log.  Also, please help your child retell the story aloud using the story map chart.

Reminders: Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.  Return library books on Monday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                      11-27-17

The November reading log is due Friday, December 4.  Please make sure your child is reading 15 minutes or more daily for homework and recording minutes read on the log.  I am sending home a story retelling card with students.  Please help your child practice retelling a story as part of reading homework.

I am also sending home a new sight word book for students.  Please help your child review sight words.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.  Return library books on Monday.

Students will visit the book fair at school today.  If students do not bring money to buy books today, they may visit the book fair on Tuesday or Wednesday to buy books.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return your child’s booklet.

Parent and Teacher Conferences will be on Wednesday and Thursday evening.  Report cards will be sent home at this time.

Wednesday, November 15, is a late start and school will begin at 9:35 a.m.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                     11-6-17

This is the first day of the second report card marking period.  Students will receive their first report card during Parent and Teacher Conferences.

Math lessons will now focus on learning about patterns; counting up and back using a number line and number grid; even and odd numbers; telling time; counting money; place value; addition; subtraction and story problems.

Reading lessons will include an emphasis on informational text as students learn about text features.

Students are learning about opinion writing in which they state their opinion about a topic, write reasons to support their opinion, and provide a closing sentence.

Our next Social Studies unit of study is What Is A Family?  Students will learn ways families are alike and different.  Students will learn how families have rules, responsibilities, and work together to help each other.

Science lessons will focus on learning about light waves.  Students will learn about how different sources of light illuminate objects so we can see them.

Students will visit the Haigh Scholastic Book Fair on Monday, November 13.  They may bring money to purchase books at school on that day.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                     10-30-17

The October reading log is due on Wednesday, November 1.  Please sign the reading log and have your child return it to school.

The first report card marking period ends this Friday, November 3.  Students will receive report cards during conferences.  I am sending home a note about Parent and Teacher Conferences today.  Please let me know if you can attend the conference date.

This Friday, November 3, is a half day of school.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.

Students do not have school on Tuesday, November 7.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                           10-23-17

Students will be taking the Unit 2 Math Test on Friday, October 27.  I will send home a study guide today.  Please help your child study for the test.

Our field trip to the Detroit Zoo is on Thursday, October 26.  Please make sure your child brings a lunch in a bag with their name written on the bag and something to drink.  Also, please make sure they wear comfortable walking shoes.

I am giving students a new sight word book to practice as a part of our reading homework.  Please review the sight words with your child.  I will test them on the words in the book soon.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return the booklet.

Students will now be able to use the Front Row website for extra Reading and Math homework practice.  Practicing on this website will really help students for when we take the NWEA Reading and Math tests on the computer in January.  Students take a pretest for the various skills and work at their own level.  Students log in to frontrowed.com using their name and our classroom code.  I will send the code home today.

Wednesday is a late start and students will begin school at 9:35 a.m.

Unit 2 Math lessons will include number grid and number line counting; counting using a ten frame;  measurement;  counting money; addition; subtraction; and number stories.

The First Grade Parent Meeting is on this Thursday, October 12, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m.   We will discuss curriculum and expectations for first grade.

The field trip money is due this Friday.

Friday, October 13, is a half day of school.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.

Students will be taking the Unit 1 Math Test on Thursday, October 5.  I am sending home a study guide today.  Please review the study guide with your child.

We are having a First Grade Parent Meeting on Thursday, October 12, 2017.  The meeting will be held in the library after school,  starting at 3:45 p.m.  The first grade teachers will discuss curriculum and expectations for the school year.

The First Grade will be going on a field trip to the Detroit Zoo on Thursday, October 26.  If you would like to volunteer to chaperone for the field trip, please complete a background check in the office as soon as possible.  The background checks take time to process.
