Dear First Grade Families,                                                 3-26-18

Unit 7 Math lessons include learning about shapes; addition; subtraction; telling time; counting money; and number stories.

Reading and Writing lessons focus on the informational genre.  After reading informational books, students will write facts about a topic.

Our Social Studies Unit is called, “How Do We Learn About the Past?”  Students will learn about a variety of ways we can study the past and learn about history.

Science lessons include learning about animals and plants.

On Thursday, March 29, we have our PBIS reward for good behavior choices during March and it is a game day.  Students may bring a board game or puzzles for our game day.

Spring vacation begins Friday, March 30 – April 8, 2018.   The March reading log is due  Monday, April 9.  Please make sure your child reaches the reading goal of reading 20 minutes daily during vacation.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.  Return library books on Monday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                        3-12-18

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign your child’s booklet and return it to school.

Our March reading goal is 20 minutes of daily reading for homework.  Please make sure your child is reading daily and recording minutes on the reading log.  Students will earn a reward for completing the March is reading month reading log and reaching the goal of 20 minutes of daily reading.

On Wednesday, March 14, we have a late start.

Reminders: Return library books on Monday.  Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                               3-5-18

Students will visit the Scholastic Book Fair at school today.  If students would like to purchase books, I can send them to the book fair on any day this week.

The Unit 6 Math Test will be on Tuesday.  Please review the study guides with your child.

Please return the February reading log by Wednesday.  The new March reading log is included in the March Is Reading Month packet.  The reading goal for all students should be 20 minutes or more daily reading homework.

The February Reading Log is due on Friday.  Reading homework continues to include reading for 20 minutes each day and recording minutes read on the reading log.

Dear First Grade Families,                                            1-29-18

The third report card marking period begins today.  Students will be receiving their report cards soon.

Students will be taking the Unit 5 Math Test on Friday.  I will send home a study guide tomorrow.  Please help your child review for the test.

Reading and writing lessons will focus on the informational genre.  Students will read about a variety of nonfiction topics.  Students will write an informational piece in which they write a topic sentence, supporting facts, and a concluding sentence.

Science lessons will involve learning about the sun, moon, stars, and space systems and patterns as students study the solar system.

Social Studies lessons will focus on geography.  Our unit of study is How So We Learn About Places?

Please return the January reading log by Friday.

Reminders: Return library books on Monday.  Read 15 minutes or more daily for homework.  Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                     1-22-18

On Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26, students will be taking the NWEA Reading Test on the computer.   Please talk to your child about taking their time and trying their best when they take the test.   Again, please make sure your child gets a lot of rest and eats a healthy breakfast.

The second report card marking period ends on Friday, January 26.  It is a half day of school.

Many students could use more school supplies.  Our whole class needs more glue sticks.  Please talk to your child to see if he or she needs crayons, pencils, glue sticks, markers or dry erase markers.  If possible, please send the supplies to school with your child.

Reminders:  Return library book on Monday.  Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                   1-16-18

On Thursday, January 18, students will be taking the Math NWEA test on the computer.  Please talk to your child about taking their time and trying their best.  Also, please make sure your child gets a lot of rest and has a healthy breakfast.  The following week students will take the Reading NWEA test.

The Unit 5 Math lessons include learning about place value; less than, greater than, and equal to symbols; number stories; addition; subtraction; telling time; and counting money.

Reading lessons focus on using the story map to practice retelling stories.

We are learning about opinion writing again and students are currently writing about their favorite season.

Social Studies lessons include the study of economics.  Students are learning about needs, wants, goods, services, producers and consumers.  Students will make products to sell at the first grade  market day at the end of our unit.

Science lessons continue to focus on the study of light and sound waves.

The second report card marking period will end on Friday, January 26.  That Friday is a half day for students.

Reminders:  Read 15 minutes or more for homework and record minutes on reading log.  Return library books on Monday.  Wear gym shoes on Wednesday.  We have a late start on Wednesday, January 17.

I hope everyone had a wonderful vacation!  I am looking forward to another great year of learning for all of the students.

Please have your child return the reading and math review packets by Wednesday.

Also, please have your child return the December reading log by Wednesday.  Homework will continue to include 15 minutes or more of reading daily.  Please have your child record minutes read on the January reading log.
