Dear First Grade Families, 11-5-18
Students will receive their report card during Parent Teacher Conferences. Please return the conference confirmation sheet as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. As we begin the second report card marking period, students will be learning many new things in the various subjects.
Math lessons will include learning how to solve number stories using addition and subtraction. Students will also learn how to count up and back as they add and subtract using a number line or number path. Students will also be learning about place value as they identify numbers in the ones, tens and hundreds place.
Our Social Studies unit of study is called, What Is A Family? Students will learn about the different ways families work together and ways in which families are alike and different.
Science lessons will focus on learning about light waves. Students will learn about sources of light as they explore a variety of science activities.
Reading lessons will include narrative and informational reading. Students will learn more about retelling stories as they advance to higher reading levels. Please make sure your child is reading 20 minutes or more daily for homework and recording minutes read on the November reading log. I will collect the reading log at the end of the month.
Writing lessons involve informational writing as students read about topics and write facts about the topic. Students will also be learning about opinion writing in which students state their opinion about a topic and write reasons to support their opinion.
On Wednesday, November 7, 2018, students will visit the Haigh Scholastic Book Fair. Students may bring money to buy books.
Reminders: Students do not have school on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Picture Re-Take day is Friday, November 9, 2018. Wear gym shoes on Monday.
Have a great week!
