Dear First Grade Families, 9-16-19

Spelling booklets will be sent home today. Please sign your child’s spelling test and return the booklet.

For the first report card marking period, students will be learning about the following:

Reading lessons will include reading a variety of stories and practicing retelling the sequence of events. Students will also be reading informational text and identifying facts about topics.

Writing lessons will include writing personal narrative experience stories. Students will also write informational facts about various topics.

Math lessons focus on addition, subtraction, number bonds, and number stories. We are using the Eureka math program.

The Social Studies unit of study is “How To Get Along With Others.” Students are learning about the importance of rules, fairness, and responsibility.

Science lessons will include the study of light waves and sound waves.

On Friday, September 20, 2019, students have a half day of school. Dismissal will be at 11:45 a.m.

Reminders: Read 15 minutes or more for homework and record minutes read on the September reading log. Wear gym shoes and return library books on Friday.

September 9, 2019

Dear First Grade Families, 9-9-19

Students did a great job learning new routines in our first grade classroom. I am looking forward to another great year of learning.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today. Please sign and return the booklet. Each Monday, students will receive a new list of spelling words and we will take the spelling test on Friday. Homework will include studying spelling words.

Homework will also include reading 15 minutes or more daily and recording minutes read on the September reading log. I will collect the reading log at the end of the month. Please have your child return their book bag to class each day.

I am also sending home reading and math homework for the week today. Students should complete homework for each day and return it on Friday.

Open House will be on Thursday, September 12, 2019, from 6:00 – 7;30 p.m. Please visit our classroom with your child so you can tour our classroom.

Students have gym on Friday. Please have your child wear gym shoes to school.

First Grade Picnic

Dear First Grade Families,                                                        5-13-19

Students will be taking the NWEA tests on the computer this week.  Please talk to your child about taking their time during the test and trying their best.   Also, please make sure your child gets a lot of rest and eats a healthy breakfast.

Haigh students will be marching in the City Beautiful Clean Up Parade today at 1:30 p.m.   Students may wear green shirts or Haigh school shirts to celebrate being a “green school.”  If possible, please come watch students march in the parade around the school as we celebrate the importance of keeping our community clean.

Students have a late start on Wednesday, May 15, and school will start at 9:35 a.m.

Reading homework continues to include reading 20 minutes or more daily and writing minutes read on the May Reading Log.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                              5-6-19

Students will be taking the NWEA Reading and Math Tests soon.  I will let you know the dates for testing when they are scheduled.

Haigh Elementary School is marching in a City Beautiful Parade around the school on Monday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m.  Please come watch students march in the parade, if you have time.

Please turn in the April Reading Log, if you have not already done so.  Reading homework will continue to include reading 20 minutes or more daily and recording minutes read on the May reading log.

Dear First Grade Families,                                           3-25-19

The March Reading Log is due when we return from vacation.  Please have your child return it so that they can earn a patch tag.

Students will be on Spring Vacation from March 30 – April 7, 2019.  I am posting the NWEA practice cards on my blog if you would like your child to have some extra practice to prepare for the test.  The Spring NWEA math and reading tests will be given on the computer during May.

Students will visit the Haigh Scholastic Book Fair today.  I can send  students to the book fair this week, if they did not bring money to buy books today.  Also, The book fair will be open Wednesday, March 20, until 7:00 p.m. so that families can visit the book fair.

Dear First Grade Families,                                            3-11-19

Students will be visiting the Haigh Scholastic Book Fair next Monday, March 18.  Students may bring money to buy books on that day.  There is also a book fair family night on Wednesday, March 20.  The book fair will be open until 7:00 p.m. on March 20.

The March Read-A-Thon is today after school from 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. for students who turned in permission slips.

Please make sure your child is reading 20 minutes or more daily and recording minutes read on the reading log.  If students reach their reading goal, they can earn a patch tag.  Our goal is to have 100% of students in the class reach their reading goal and turn in the reading log.

On Wednesday, March 13, students have a late start.
