Dear First Grade Families,                                                     2-24-14

Spelling test booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

Unit 5 Math lessons will include comparing numbers using <, >, and = symbols; counting coins; reading a thermometer; telling time; addition and subtraction.  Each Friday we will continue to have a computation timed math test.  Practice pages will be sent home today.

Social Studies lessons continue to focus on the study of Economics.  Students are learning to identify needs, wants, goods, services, producers and consumers.

Earth Science lessons focus on the study of the sky and weather.

Writing lessons focus on opinion writing.

Reminders:  Read for homework 15 minutes or more;  On Friday we will have our Spelling test, gym and return library books.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                       2-10-14

On Friday, February 14, 2014, we will be having our classroom Valentine’s Day party.  Students can bring a valentine card for each student in the class, if you wish to participate.  We have a total of 19 students.  There are 12 girls and 7 boys in our class.  Students can bring a game to play for the party.

Hello First Grade Families,                                                       1-27-14

I am sending home a new reading log this week.  Please make sure your child is reading 15 or more minutes daily for homework.

I am also sending home Spelling homework this week.  Please help your child to complete three activities listed on the homework page.  All of the Spelling homework is due by Thursday.

A common sight word list will be sent home today.  Please review the list with your child from time to time for extra practice.  A great way to help your child at home is to make flash cards.  The students continue to learn the common sight words.

Writing lessons focus on writing a personal narrative in which students write about a significant event in their lives.

Math lessons include telling time to the quarter-hour; counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s; measuring; addition and subtraction.

Social Studies lessons will involve the study of economics.  Students will learn to identify needs, wants, goods, services, producers and consumers.

Science lessons will include the study of weather and the four seasons.

Hello First Grade Families,                                                     1/21/14

The Unit 3 Social Studies test will be sent home today.  Please sign the test and have your child return it.

Thursday is a half day of school.  Students do not have school Friday, January 24, 2014.  Friday is the last day of the second report card marking.  You will be receiving your child’s report card soon after.

For homework, please make sure your child is reading 15 – 20 minutes daily.   I will be sending home a new reading response log next week.

Hello First Grade Families,                                                         1/13/14

I am sending home a Scholastic book order today.  If you would like to order books, all orders are due Friday, January 17, 2014.  Cash payment only.

A new spelling list will be sent home today.  Please help your child study the words so they are prepared for the spelling test on Friday.

Unit 4 Math lessons will include studying measurement; telling time on the quarter-hour; counting practice; identifying even and odd numbers; and counting coins.

During writing lessons, students are learning to form their opinion about topics and write reasons explaining their opinion.

On Thursday, we will be having a Social Studies test .  The test will include questions about how people learn about places.  I will send home a review of the unit.

Science lessons continue to include study of animals.

Reminders:   Read 15 – 20 minutes daily; Gym on Friday; Return library book Friday.

On Wednesday, December 11, 2013, our class will be visiting the school Holiday Gift Shop.  Students have the opportunity to buy gifts during this time.

Reading and writing lessons continue to focus on realistic fiction.  Students will plan and write their own realistic fiction story.

During Math, we will be reviewing Unit 3 lessons.  I will send home a review page for the test this week.  We will be reviewing counting pennies, nickels and dimes; frames and arrows; finding sums of ten; and telling time.

Social Studies lessons will continue to include learning about places and reading maps.

Science lessons continue to include the study of animals.

Hello First Grade Families,                                                               12/2/13

This week during reading and writing lessons, students will learn about realistic fiction.  We will read a variety of realistic fiction stories and students will begin to write their own realistic fiction story.

During Math, students will learn to count pennies, nickels and dimes.  We will also practice counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and10’s.  Lessons will also include telling time and addition and subtraction practice.

Social Studies lessons continue to include learning about places and reading maps.

Science lessons will include the study of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects.

Reminders:  Read for homework 15 – 20 minutes daily; Gym on Friday; Return library books Friday.

On Tuesday, students can bring a board game to play at the end of the day.  We will have a small treat and play board games .  We will be on vacation beginning Wednesday, November 27 and return to school Monday, December 2, 2013.

Reading homework will continue to include 15 – 20 minutes reading daily.

During Social Studies, students are learning about places.  Please have your child practice writing his or her address.

Parent / Teacher Conferences will be on Wednesday, November 20 and Thursday, November 21.  You will receive your child’s report card at conferences.

Reminders:  Thursday – wear gym shoes.  Friday – Return library book.
