Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

Unit 3 Math lessons include addition, subtraction, even and odd numbers, patterns, counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, tally marks, and counting money.

Social Studies lessons focus on Economics.  Students are learning about needs, wants, goods, services, producers and consumers.

Science lessons will continue to focus on the sky, weather and seasons.

Reminders:  Parent Teacher Conferences will be held November 13, 19 and 20.  Late Start  Wednesday.  Read for homework 15 minutes or more daily.  Gym on Tuesday.  Return library books on Friday.

Students really enjoyed making crafts and playing games at our Halloween party.  Thank you to everyone who donated goods and time to help make our party a success.

I will review the Social Studies test with parents at conferences.  Our new unit of study will focus on economics.  Students will learn about wants, needs, goods, services, producers, and consumers.

Unit 2 Math tests will be sent home today.  Please sign your child’s test and have him or her return it to school.

A Social Studies review packet will be sent home today.  We will have our Social Studies test on Thursday.  Please review the packet to help your child study for the test.

On Thursday Haigh school will have our PBIS celebration to recognize good behavior.  Students will be able to watch a movie in the afternoon to reward good behavior.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 14, 2014 is Picture Day.  Please return order forms if you are planning to buy school pictures.

Unit 2 Math lessons include addition; subtraction; tally marks; counting by 2s and 5s; telling time; and counting pennies and nickels.

Social Studies lessons include study of family, needs and wants, rules and responsibilities. Students took the History Social Studies test.  I will review the test with parents during the November parent conferences.  The common assessment is not supposed to be sent home.

Science lessons continue to include study of the sun, sky weather and seasons.

We will be having a Social Studies test this week on history and learning about the past.

Elementary school students in Dearborn will be taking a reading and math test in the next couple weeks.  It is Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) testing.  The tests will be given three times each year to measure academic progress.  The test is taken on a computer.

Reminders:  Wednesday, October 1, is a Late Start Day;

No School – Vacation – Friday, October 3 and Monday, October 6.

Your child will continue to take home a book bag each day .  Please have your child read 15 minutes or more daily for homework.  Some days will include writing a response about what was read.

We are finishing the Unit 1 Math lessons this week. A Unit 1 Math Review will be sent home this week.  Please review with your child as we prepare to take the Unit 1 Math test.

We will also be finishing the Social Studies unit on history and learning about the past.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                                 9-15-14

Open House is Thursday, September 18, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.  I hope everyone can visit our classroom in Room 34 and the rest of Haigh.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign your child’s booklet and have him or her return it to school on Tuesday.  Each Monday students will get a new list of words to study.  Every Friday we will have our spelling test.

Reading homework will begin this week.  Please have your child read for homework for at least 15 minutes each day.  Some days, students will write a response about what they read.  To begin, students can write about their favorite part of the story.

Math lessons include counting practice, addition and using a number line to count.

Social Studies lessons focus on learning history.  We have been discussing ways in which students can learn about the past.

Science lessons include study of the sun, sky and weather.

Each Friday, students visit the library.  Please have your child return  his or her book to school by Friday.

Reminder:  Gym on Tuesday, wear or bring gym shoes.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                     6-2-14

We are finishing all units of study in the various subject areas.

This Wednesday, June 4, 2014, we will be going on the field trip to Greenfield Village.  Please remember to have your child bring a bag lunch with his or her name on it.

On Tuesday, June 10, we will be having a picnic at Levagood Park.  Students will eat lunch at the park and participate in a variety of games.  Lunch will be provided for your child.  We will be having cheese pizza, chips, cookies and other snack items.

Thursday, June 12, 2014 is the last day of school.  It is a half day and students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.

I have had an excellent school year teaching your children.  They are all wonderful individuals.

On Thursday, May 22, we will be celebrating Earth Day.  Please have your child bring a bag lunch, blanket or towel to sit on during activities, and a potted flower to plant in the garden.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

The Unit 8 Math test will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

Unit 9 Math lessons will include counting by 1s and 10s using a number grid; adding and subtracting tens; adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers; and fractions.

Writing lessons will focus on writing a personal narrative in which students write a story about a significant event in their life.

Science lessons continue to focus on the three states of matter.

Social Studies lessons involve ways to get along with others.

Reminders:  Read for homework 15 minutes or more.  Students do not have school Friday, May 23 and Monday, May 26, 2014.
