Dear First Grade Families,                                                                                    3-2-15

March is Reading Month.  We have a lot of great reading activities planned at school to motivate and encourage your child to read even more this month.  If you would like to read to our class during March, please send me a note listing the day and time you would like to read.  The best time of day to read to our class is 9:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. with our busy schedule.  However, if there is a time that works better for you, I will try to accommodate your schedule.  I can supply a book for you to read or you may bring your own.  Please let me know if you are interested.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

Reminders:  Gym on Tuesday; Return library book on Friday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                        2-23-15

We are working hard to achieve our learning goals.  Please continue to make sure your child reads for homework 15 minutes or more each day.  The February reading log calendar is due next week.  Also, please make sure your child continues to do the spelling homework.

On Wednesday, February 25, we will celebrate the 100th day of school.  Your child may bring in a collection of 100 items any day this week.  This is not required, but your child may enjoy this activity.

The Unit 5 Math test will be sent home today.  Spelling booklets will also be sent home.  Please sign the spelling booklet and return.

Unit 6 Math lessons will include addition, subtraction, fact families, fact triangles, measurement, shapes, and telling time.

Social Studies lessons will include the study of how we learn about places.  Students will learn how to read a map.  They will also learn about absolute location or the specific address for a location.  Please help your child review his or her home address.

Science lessons will continue to involve the study of matter, solids, liquids, and gas.  Students are also learning about properties of objects.

Writing lessons will concentrate on the personal narrative or experience story.

Reminders:  Gym on Tuesday; Return library book on Friday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                             2-9-15

We will have the Unit 5 Math test on Friday.  I will send home a study guide soon.  Please help your child study for the Math test.

Our classroom Valentine’s Day party will be on Friday.  Again, students may bring a game to play during the party.  They may also bring a Valentine card for students in class as I mentioned in the note about the party.

Reminders:  Read for homework.  Please keep track of time spent reading by using the calendar.  Gym on Tuesday; Return library books on Friday.  Late Start on Wednesday. No School February 14-22, 2015.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                             2-2-15

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.

I am sending home a reading log for the month of February.  Please have your child read for homework 15 minutes or more at least five days each week.  It is a reading challenge and if your child reads at least 400 minutes or more during the month of February, he or she will earn a prize.  Reading really helps students reach high academic levels of success.

Unit 5 Math lessons include addition; subtraction; counting coins; place value; telling time; number stories (story problems); and use of less than, greater than and equal to symbols.

Science lessons will continue to include study of properties of objects.  Students are studying the three states of matter, solid, liquid and gas.

Writing lessons involve informational writing in which students learn to write facts about various topics.

Reminders:  Gym on Tuesday; Return library books on Friday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                               1-26-15

Report cards will be sent home soon.

Students will take the NWEA test using the computer during the next couple of weeks.  They will be tested in reading and math.  The NWEA test  will be given to students three times during the school year.  They will take the test again in May.  This is the first year Dearborn Public Schools has used the NWEA test.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                                     1-12-15

We will have the Unit 4 Math Test on Thursday.  I am sending home a study guide today.  Please help your child study.

I will send home a study guide for the Social Studies unit about Economics soon.  I will let you know the test date when it has been determined.

Science lessons continue to include study of the sky and weather.

Students often have indoor lunch recess.  They may bring a coloring book or small building block set to use during that time.

The second report card marking period ends on Friday, January 22, 2015.  Students will receive their report card including academic and behavior grades.  Please continue  to encourage your child to read, do homework, and listen carefully during lessons.  It has a huge impact on their success in school.  Thank you for all of your support.

Reminders:  No school Monday, January 19, Martin Luther King ,Jr. Day;

1/2 Day Thursday, January 22; No school Friday, January 23.  Gym on Tuesday;

Return library books on Friday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                    12-15-14

The December Reading Challenge log is due Thursday.  Please write the total number of minutes your child has read for the month and sign and return the form.  Time spent reading really helps your child increase his or her reading level.  Please make sure your child is reading at home for homework.

Unit 4 Math lessons include addition, subtraction, reading a thermometer, measurement, timelines and telling time on the quarter hour.

Social Studies lessons continue to focus on study of economics.  Students are learning about needs, wants, goods, services, producers and consumers.

Thursday, December 18, we will have our PBIS good behavior reward celebration.  Students can wear pajamas to school that day.  Students can bring a favorite book to share.  We will read books and enjoy cookies and milk.

Friday, December 19, we will have our holiday party at the end of the day.  Students may bring a game to play.  Please write your child’s name on the game.  We will play games, make crafts and enjoy a snack.

The Unit 3 Math test will be sent home today.   Please sign your child’s math test and return to school.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return.  Please make sure your child is doing the spelling homework.  This will really help your child learn the words.

On Wednesday, December 10, students will visit the Haigh Holiday Gift Shop.  Students may bring money to purchase gifts.

We will be having the Unit 3 Math Test soon.  I will send home a study guide at the end of the week.  Please review with your child.  The test will be Tuesday, November 25.

Social Studies lessons focus on Economics.  Students are learning about needs, wants, goods and services, producers and consumers.

Science lessons continue to focus on the sky, weather, and seasons.

We will begin Student of the Week this week.  Each week one student will be selected.  I will send home an “All About Me” poster.  The poster will help us learn more about each other.  When it is your child’s turn, please help him or her with the project.

Reminders:  Parent Teacher Conferences will be held November 19 and 20.  Read for homework 15 minutes or more daily.  Gym on Tuesday.
