Students will get a sight word packet to study today. Please help your child review the words at home. Knowing these words will really help your child with reading.
We will be having our Unit 1 Math Test soon. I will send home a study guide for the test this week. Please review the study guide with your child.

Dear First Grade Families, 9-28-15
Students will get a new list of spelling words to study today. On Friday, we will have our second spelling test.
Math lessons continue to include counting using a number grid and number line; number writing practice; counting using tally marks; and reading graphs.
Social Studies lessons will continue to focus on history and ways we learn about the past.
We are still studying matter and properties of objects during Science lessons.
Reminders: Mondays, wear gym shoes; Visit library on Fridays.

Dear First Grade Families, 9-14-15
Students are doing a great job learning our new school routines. They are working hard each day. Each week, I will send home a newsletter to let you know what we are learning. The newsletter is also posted in my blog on the Haigh website.
Every Monday, students will get a new spelling list of words to study for the week. I also include spelling homework. On Friday, students will have a spelling test. The tests are sent home for you to sign and return to school. Students will be tested on the list of words and also be tested on their ability to spell words that fit the spelling pattern, but are not listed. For example, if students have the -an word family on the list, the student may be asked to spell the word pan, even though it is not on the list. They are tested on their ability to apply the letter sound to the pattern and spell the word. If you help your child practice spelling words that rhyme with the pattern, that will be very helpful. I will also do this.
Students will also have reading homework each day. Please make sure your child is reading 15 minutes or more daily. I will send home a book bag of books to read at their level. The book bags will be sent home each day and returned to school.
Math lessons include counting using a number grid and number line; number writing practice; and counting using tally marks.
Social Studies lessons will include learning about the past, present and future. Students study history as they are learning how people lived in the past compared to the present.
Science lessons involve learning about properties of matter. Students will be able to identify a solid, liquid and gas.

We will have the Unit 8 Math test on Thursday. I will send home a Unit 8 study guide. Please help your child study for the test.

Students need dry erase markers. If possible, please send some dry erase markers to school with your child.

Dear First Grade Families, 4-20-15
The Unit 7 Math Test will be sent home today. Please sign and return the test. Also, please sign and return the spelling booklet.
Unit 8 Math lessons will include learning about counting money; place value; addition and subtraction; and telling time.
Science lessons involve the study of animals. Students are learning about needs of animals, animal habitats, and life cycles of animals.
Social Studies lessons focus on the study of how we get along with others. We are reviewing the importance of rules at home, school and society.
Writing lessons include informational writing. Students write paragraphs including a topic sentence, facts and closing sentence.
The shape robots are amazing! Students were so creative in this fun learning project! We learned a lot about shapes and helped our environment by reusing objects to make the robots. Thank you for your support in this project.

Dear First Grade Families, 3-30-15
Spelling booklets will be sent home today. Please sign and return. We will not have a new spelling list this week, since we do not have school on Friday.
Math lessons for Unit 7 include the study of shapes, polygons, addition, subtraction, telling time, and counting money.
Science lessons continue to include the study of sorting objects by property and the three states of matter. We will be studying animals after the spring vacation.
Writing lessons involve informational writing. Students learn how to write paragraphs with a topic sentence, supporting facts and a closing sentence.
The Spring Celebration is on Wednesday. from 2:00 – 3:15. Please join us, if you have time.
Reminders: Gym on Tuesday; Spring vacation begins Friday, April 3. Return to school Monday, April 13.

Dear First Grade Families, 3-16-15
The Social Studies test is Tuesday. Please review the study guide with your child. Students will also take the same test using the computer on Wednesday. They do not get to look at the hand written test in the computer lab. I will read the questions and choices aloud to all students. This is required.
The Unit 6 Math test will be on Thursday. Please continue to review the study guide with your child.
The third report card marking ends on Friday, March 20. Report cards will be sent home soon.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be on March 26, 4:00 – 7:00. I will send information about conferences tomorrow.
Upcoming Events: Spring Celebration – April 1. All first graders will celebrate Spring together with a variety of fun activities. I will send more information soon.
Field trip to the Detroit Zoo – May 19. If you would like to chaperone, you must complete a background check in the office. This will need to be done soon.
End of the school year picnic- June 5.
