Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

 

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

Dear First Grade Families,                                                        11-7-16

Today is the first day of the second report card marking period.  Report cards for the first card marking will be given to parents during conferences.  Conferences will be held November 10, 16 and 17.

The Unit 2 math test will be sent home today.  Please sign and return the test.  Unit 3 math lessons will include addition, subtraction, patterns, even and odd numbers, telling time, counting money and story problems.

Reading lessons will continue to include Daily 5 and CAFE reading strategies.  Please continue to make sure your child is reading at home 15 minutes or more for homework each day.

Writing lessons will focus on informational writing.  Students will write facts about various topics.

Science lessons will include study of weather and seasons.  Students will also learn about tools used to analyze weather conditions.

The Social Studies unit of study is What Is A Family?  Students will learn about how families are alike and different.

We will visit the Haigh Scholastic Book Fair on Monday, November 14.  Students may bring money to school to buy books on that day.

Reminders:  Students do not have school on Tuesday, November 8.  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                          10-31-16

I will give the Unit 2 Math Test on Thursday.  I am sending home another study guide so students have more time to study.  Please review the study guide with your child.

Parent Teacher conferences will be held November 10, 16 and 17.  I am sending home a conference time slip.  Students will receive their first report card during the conference time.

October reading logs are due on Wednesday.  I will send home another reading log for November.  Please continue to make sure your child reads 15 minutes or more daily.

There is a 1/2 day of school on Friday.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.

Reminders: Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                               10-24-16

Our classroom Halloween party is on Friday, October 28 from 10:30-11:45 a.m.  The Haigh  School costume parade begins at 9:30 a.m.  Please have your child wear his or her costume to school that day.  Please join us, if you have time.

The Unit 2 Math Test Study Guide will be sent home on Thursday.  The Unit 2 Math Test will be given on Wednesday, November 2.  Please help your child study for the test.  We will continue practicing the Add 3 math computation page.

I am sending home a new sight word book.  Please help your child study the words.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.  Read for homework 15 minutes or more.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                     10-17-16

Our field trip to the Detroit Zoo is this Friday, October 21.  Please have your child bring a lunch and drink in a paper bag with his or her name written on the bag.  Also, please have your child wear comfortable walking shoes.

I will send home the adding 3 math computation page.  Students will practice for a couple of weeks and then take the math computation test.  I will let you know when the test will be scheduled.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return your child’s booklet.

Reminders:  Read 15 minutes or more for homework and record minutes on the reading log.  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                 10-10-16

Our First Grade Parent Meeting is on this Wednesday from 7:50 – 8:30 a.m.  We will discuss first grade curriculum and various ways to help your child with homework.  Please join us, if you have time.

Our field trip to the Detroit Zoo is on Friday, October 21.  Please turn in the permission slip and money for the zoo, if you haven’t already done so.

We are starting Unit 2 Math lessons.  Students will be learning more about counting using a number grid; addition; subtraction; telling time; counting money; and number stories.

This Friday, students will take the adding 2 math computation test.  Please encourage your child to try their best.  All students work at a different pace.  Ten minutes of practice for homework on math computation is enough practice at this point in time.

Students will be receiving a new reading book bag to use for the school year.  They will be using a canvas book bag, instead of the plastic bags.  Please talk to your child about taking good care of the new book bags.

Students will be getting a new sight word list.  Please help your child practice reading the words for homework along with reading 15 minutes or more daily.

Reminders:  This Friday, October 14, is a half day of school.  Dismissal time is 11:45 a.m.  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return your child’s booklet.

Students will take the Unit 1 Math test on Wednesday.  Please continue to review the study guide with your child.  I will give the Add 2 Math Computation test next week, since we are having a Unit 1 test this week.

I am sending home a reading log for the month of October.  Students should be reading 15 minutes or more daily.  Please record the number of minutes read daily and sign and return the reading log by Tuesday, November 4.

We are having a First Grade Parent Meeting on Wednesday, October 12, 7:50 – 8:30 a.m.  The meeting will be before school and will be held in the library.  We will be discussing curriculum for the year.

Students will be having their school pictures taken this Friday, October 7.

Dear First Grade Families,                                                                     9-26-16

Spelling booklets will be sent home today.  Please sign and return your child’s booklet.

I am sending home a sight word booklet.  Please help your child study the words as a part of reading homework.  Reading homework includes reading 15 minutes or more daily.  This really helps to improve your child’s reading level.

Math lessons include addition; counting using tally marks, a number grid and number line; and using graphs.  For math computation practice, students will focus on adding 2 to various numbers.  I will not be giving the adding 2 math test this week.  Students will take the test next week.

Writing lessons will focus on writing personal narratives.

Science lessons involve study of the three states of matter.   Students will learn how to identify a solid, liquid and gas.

Our Social Studies unit of study is “How To Get Along With Others.”  Students are learning about ways to get along with others as they work in cooperative learning groups.  The importance of following school rules is also included in the unit.

Reminders:  Wear gym shoes and return library books on Monday.
