Today we Peer Edited our Character Analysis Essays and began revising/editing them. Students will be given class time tomorrow and Thursday to finish their final copies. They must be typed and printed out before class on Friday.

We took our Grammar quiz today. The retake was built into the quiz so students were given multiple chances to fix their mistakes.   The end of the card marking is today and grades are due. Any late or missing work past this point is a zero in the grade book. Don’t forget, the “Prince and the Pauper” character analysis essay is due the day we return so we can begin peer editing!

We finished our rough drafts today after going over introductions and conclusions again. Students will get some time in class tomorrow to finish their writing if they did not finish in class. Below are the sentence starters provided in class as well as the example I wrote to model a body, introduction, and conclusion paragraph. Please do not copy my examples but use them to help you follow the correct format!

We continued writing our Character Analysis Essay by expanding on our topic sentences to create body paragraphs. Students will get some time in class tomorrow to continue writing these but I encourage you to finish this for homework since you have so much due in two days. Below are the sentence starters provided in class as well as the example I wrote to model a body paragraph. Please do not copy my example but use it as a guide! We also went to the library and learned about the Greek and Latin root “Meter”.

We began our Character Analysis Essay by writing our thesis statement and creating topic sentences for our body paragraphs. We will complete these body paragraphs tomorrow after going to the library. We also went over our quotation marks practice page.

We did an activity with the theme of “The Prince and the Pauper” today where we brainstormed possible themes with our table groups then passed our poster to the the next table and found evidence and reasoning to support other groups theme choices. It was challenging but we persevered! We also took notes on the rules of using quotation marks.

We continued acting out the play “The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain and continued filling out our notes with the character traits. We then chose a character we would like to focus on for an in-depth analysis and made our claim about them.  We also took notes about the rules of apostrophes.

We also continued acting out the play “The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain and began filling out our notes with the character traits the major and minor characters are displaying so far.  We also took notes about the rules of commas and practiced with them.

Unit 4 Test Retake:   TOMORROW ONLY @ 7:20 am and 3:00pm

To be eligible for this retake you MUST:

  • Have a 79% overall grade or LOWER
  • Have parent signature on original test  – parent signature on anything else will not be accepted

We reviewed Characterization and how to identify character traits. We also continued acting out the play “The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain. All students will get the opportunity to play a part at some point during this unit.

We continued acting out the play “The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain. All students will get the opportunity to play a part at some point during this unit. We began class with some Word Work to explore the challenging vocabulary students will need to understand the events in our play. Then, we began acting out the play “The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain. All students will get the opportunity to play a part at some point during this unit. This is being performed during class over the course of the next 5-6 school days.

Students were given more time to type up their final copies for their Compare and Contrast essays and some even went to the library to print theirs. This is now homework due tomorrow. If you are not able to print at home you MUST print in the library BEFORE my class begins (before school, advisory time, lunchtime – just ask your teacher or me to write you a pass!).

Today we were introduced to the American author Mark Twain and discussed interesting facts we learned from our Newsela article. We also were introduced to “The Prince and the Pauper” drama we will begin acting out tomorrow. At the end of class we learned the Greek/Latin roots “Geo” and “Graph” and wrote our notes in our notebook.

Students were given over 30 minutes to type up their final copies for their Compare and Contrast essays. They will get some time tomorrow but not as much as today. Please make sure you finish this at home and print it out in time for class Friday!

We took our open book Unit 4 Comprehension Test today which took majority of class. Any time that was left was Daily 5 time.

Introduction:

  1. Introduce the topic of theme in an interesting way
  2. Give background information about your story AND your chosen poem
  3. Make your claim

 

Conclusion:

  1. Restate your claim in a new way
  2. Remind the reader about the similar theme and the different themes you talked about
  3. Explain why these themes are important to learn
