Today we began planning for our Argumentative Essay. We picked our topic, wrote our thesis statement plan, and began to plan our body paragraphs.  If you did not finish in class, all body paragraphs need to be complete by Thursday BEFORE class begins!

We did reading and writing workshop stations today. If your “Fast Food” Annotations, Quiz, and CER are not done, they are due no later than Sunday evening. I will not reset any quizzes past 7pm on Sunday and will check several times to reset every day starting tonight.   Your Video Game opinion CER is also due on Monday.

Today we had small group discussions about the Video Game articles we read and made a pro/con list on. We did this using the Socratic Seminar model.

Today we had an assembly with the Detroit Pistons so our schedule was cut short.   We used our shortened class time to begin our Story Elements Project Presentations. We will finish these tomorrow.

We went to the library and continued our Story Elements Project. Students were given an hour yesterday and an hour + today to complete this with their group. If this is was not completed by the end of class it is now homework over break. I told students to divvy out jobs or exchange numbers to figure out when this is going to get done. It is due NO LATER than the Monday we return from Thanksgiving break.

We used our Double Journal Entries to lead a group discussion. We also shared our quotes as a class and discussed our thinking around them as a whole group.  During writer’s workshop we worked with our table group to collaboratively write a C.E.R. response about one of the conflicts in the story “Tuesday of the Other June”. Each student showed their participation by choosing a different marker color and writing their part in this color (Rainbow Write). We will present these in class tomorrow.

Last day of conferences are tonight! 3:30-6:30pm. Please allow an hour to be able to visit all your classes. Conferences are student-led in 6th grade! Bring your student with you so they can show off their work!

Today we talked to the text with our story “Tuesday of the Other June” on a Double Entry Journal. Students were given half of class to work on this and many finished. If you did not, this is homework that is due tomorrow. We need this for tomorrow’s discussion!

We also began our Argumentative Writing Unit with discussing the different between facts and opinions. We practiced differentiating between the two with examples as well.

Possessive noun notes were taken at the end of class. We will finish these tomorrow in blocks 1 and 3.

We went to the Book Fair today to preview what was there or purchase something we wanted. The book fair will be open during conferences as well but we are not visiting again this week as a class.

When we returned, we previewed our Article of the Week.  As a class we discussed what we think the article will be about and the author’s purpose for writing it. We then independently read and talked to the text using our metacognition strategies to help us prepare for a group discussion about the article.

 

Conferences are:   

  • Monday (today) 4:00-7:00pm
  • Wednesday 3:30-6:30pm

Conferences are student led in 6th grade. Please bring your student with you so they can show you what we have been learning in language arts!

Today we finished reading “Tuesday of the Other June” and discussed the other types of conflicts we could identify in the story with our partner. We also reviewed the rules of plural nouns and practiced writing them correctly and identifying which rule they fell under. Students were given 45 minutes this week to finish their Read Theory in class. If they did not complete this it is now homework!

One pager #3 is in your hands now! The sooner you get this started the less stressed you will feel at the end of the card marking!

Today we previewed and made predictions about our new story “Tuesday of the Other June” and then listened to the first half of it. We discussed the “man vs. man” conflict found in the story with our groups. We then continued our Student Led Conferences reflection sheets and practiced using them with a partner.  One pager #3 was passed out today as well! The sooner you get this started the less stressed you will feel at the end of the card marking!

Today we finished our vocabulary workshop from Monday and presented them to the class. We then began our Student Led Conferences reflection sheet where students evaluated their performance and behavior so far this year. This will be shared at conferences next week!
