Reading: We had a small group and whole class discussion about “The Jacket” by Gary Soto.  We also practiced identifying figurative language in a short story to review for tomorrow’s quiz.
Writing:  We practiced with Adverbs. We also continued the Peer Editing process. We will finish Peer Editing tomorrow and provide our partners with our feedback.

Figurative Language Quiz TOMORROW – study ISN pgs 49-51, there’s some practice on Quizlet but your notes and the practice we did in class today will help you the most!

Today we reread “The Jacket” by Gary Soto with the purpose of analyzing the figurative language used. We focused mainly on similes, metaphors, and personification. 
We also began taking notes on Adverbs and did some practice with them. 
Personal Narrative Rough Drafts were due today. We began the Peer Editing process at the end of class, which will continue through Thursday.

Today we took a Mid-Year CER writing prompt assessment. This is used to assess where students are in terms of the writing process and skills.  Students that have been absent and needed to finish the NWEA did so in class during this time and will complete the writing prompt when they are finished. 
When students finished, they were asked to read “The Jacket” by Gary Soto so we can begin an activity with it tomorrow. If you didn’t read it, it is to be read at home. You can read the story HERE.

NWEA Testing (Reading and Language) continued today. Most students are finished now and we will be moving on on Monday. Those that are not finished will continue in the library and are expected to make up what they missed on their own time.

Writing:  We worked on brainstorming obstacles we’ve had to overcome or life’s challenges for a possible personal narrative story idea.  Your storyboards for “Overcoming Obstacles” and “My Greatest Memory” are due on Tuesday! (January 22nd)

We practiced identifying figurative language in context using a short story today. They were given up to 2 more stories to complete for extra credit (due Wednesday, January 23rd).

We then were given time to work on our Figurative Language Projects. These are due on Friday. Remember – pick ONE type of figurative language from the list and ONE box to complete on the directions page.   There are 7 points extra credit on this if you choose TWO boxes and present to the class on Friday!

During Writer’s Workshop we began to plan our personal narratives on a storyboard. We will continue this tomorrow.

Today was library day. After going to the library we reviewed figurative language and did a small group Gallery Walk with identifying examples in context and explaining what the author is trying to say literally.  We practiced with comparative and superlative adjectives as well.

“My Greatest Memory” Brainstorming page is homework if you did not finish this yesterday or today. Please bring it completed with you to class tomorrow so we can plan our personal narratives.

We finished our figurative language notes today by discussing and practicing with allusions and idioms. Students have practice on MobyMax that is due by February 1st. The remaining time in class was writer’s workshop time. Students were given choices for what they wanted to work on during this time.

We continued reviewing figurative language with alliterations and symbolism. We also did adjective practice in our ISN. Writer’s workshop time was used to brainstorm things about ourselves we could incorporate in an “I Am” poem.

All One-Pagers are due TOMORROW – I will NOT accept these late. Students were given these MONTHS in advance to be prepared for their due date!

Today we reviewed figurative language and took notes on onomatopoeia and personification. During Writer’s workshop we developed our story plans into a rough draft. This is homework if it wasn’t finished during this time. Please bring tomorrow to put in your working folders for credit.

Today we reviewed classroom expectations and reflected on our own behavior moving into the 2nd half of the year. We began our figurative language unit with reviewing what we remembered and taking notes on examples and definitions of similes and metaphors. During writer’s workshop we reviewed the writing process and began brainstorming ideas for an upcoming narrative.
