Update – After Spring Break

Posted on

Hello! I hope everyone is doing well!

This week’s assignments are already up and posted on Google Classroom. It is labeled March 30th-April 3rd – click the assignment to open the instructions.  This week you have another Newsela (please follow the directions exactly), 10 more Read Theory (should have 65 since Jan. 18th for full credit), and your last 4 IXL lessons, along with reading your chapter book. (I sent an email to students about how I graded IXL – please read your email). There is not work next week due to Spring Break.

After Spring Break, we will be starting a novel study on the book The Giver by Lois Lowry. I realize libraries are closed and getting access to a book may be difficult. I have a PDF copy of the book I will upload to iLearn for those of you that can’t get access to ebooks or purchase a copy of your own. I strongly encourage you to have your own hard copy that you can highlight and annotate in – and can be used for quizzes. The PDF version is a little more difficult to manage and there isn’t an opportunity to annotate with it – but you will still be able to use it on quizzes as well.

Target and Amazon have the best price for the book right now but I also included a link to Barnes and Noble. I also support going online to your locally owned bookstores too!

Stay safe and I will be updating you again later in the week or next week when I have more information!

PLEASE READ!! – School Closure Assignments

Posted on

Due to closing school, the Sixth Grade Language Arts teachers have come up with a learning plan for students. Please do your best to complete the following assignments before returning to school on April 13th. We will be using IXL, Read Theory, NewsELA, and your good fit book to help support your learning. Each assignment is explained below.

A list of the weekly assignments will also be posted to my Google Classroom to help you manage your weeks. (Click on “Classwork” and it’s listed under “School Closure Resources”)

Read Theory

You are expected to complete 10 Read Theory Quizzes per week. The start date for Marking Period 3 is January 18th. At this point, you should have 35 quizzes completed to receive full credit. Since you are being expected to complete 10 quizzes each week, you should have 65 quizzes passed with a start date of January 18th and an end date of April 12th.

NewsELA

You are expected to complete 3 NewsELA articles while you are out of school. All three of them have been added to our classroom page on NewsELA. You are expected to complete one article each week. The directions for the assignment have been posted with the articles. They are the directions we have been following all year.

Week One (March 16th): “How this Busy Animal Rescue Gets by with Four Full-Time Employees”

Week Two (March 23rd): “Opinion: With or Without Trophies, Youth Sports Need to be Fun”

Week Three (March 30th): “In a “Bizzare” Biological Twist, a Mother Lion Adopts a Leopard Cub in India”

IXL

You are expected to complete four IXL lessons each week. The following lessons are required. We recommend you complete them in order to help you be successful:

K. 1-4 Writing Strategies

A.1-Main Idea

D. 1-4 Text Structure

KK. 1-2 Capitalization

LL. 4 Formatting

These are already starred for you on IXL. For help with IXL, there are links to videos posted to my Google Classroom.

The IXL that was due on March 13th is still due by midnight tonight. I will un-star them after today. Please look at my previous blog post for the letter & number assigned.

Good Fit Books

Continue to read your good fit book for 100 minutes each week (5 nights per week for 20 minutes). You should be half way through your seventh good fit book by the time you return to school on April 13th. Please utilize the public library. Many libraries have online services to borrow e-books – please take advantage of these!

Our media specialist compiled a list of resources where you can get access to free ebooks here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/178sD8ktpFoX6my0FO-bSR-nw1wMqjneyYrul-8EDRyU/edit?usp=sharing

One-Pagers

One-Pagers Five and Six will be due when you return on April 13th. Directions are posted on Google Classroom if you need them. For those who want to get started, the directions for One-Pager Number 7 will be posted to Google Classroom soon.

We will be monitoring your progress as the weeks progress! Check your teacher’s blogs DAILY for updates!
