ReadingWe worked on reading and talking to the text with our Article of the Week on Newsela. This will be due no later than March 8th and is homework if not finished in class.

WritingWe practiced with conjunctions. Then, were introduced to our Theme Project at the end of class. This is a group project centered around the story of the group’s choosing. Students will get time on Friday, Monday and Tuesday to work on this in class. All absent students have been placed in a group willing to include them when they return. This project is due on March 6th. We will be presenting in class on this day.

Reading:  We read the poem “Message From a Caterpillar” and discussed it’s theme with our groups and as a class.  

 

Writing:  We helped Mrs. Dailing write a theme CER paragraph about “Message From a Caterpillar”. After discussing this, we read “The Ant and the Grasshopper” and wrote our own theme CER paragraph about it. This was due at the end of class or it was homework. Today was library day.
Reading:  We practiced with poetry rhyme schemes and then took notes about theme. We discussed possible themes of “The Good Deed” and supported it with evidence with our groups.

Reading:  Today we reviewed what we learned so far about types of poetry and the different kinds of structure. We then took notes on rhyme scheme and practiced with several poems.

 

Writing:  One of the poems we practiced with connected to our story “The Good Deed”. We wrote a CER on the type of connection and how we know.

Reading:  We continued our Poetry unit today. We took notes on the last 4 types of poems as well as the 3 terms we use to identify a poem’s structure.

Reading:  We worked on making inferences about a character by completing a media activity where we analyzed a video clip with the character Clark Kent from the show “Smallville”. 

 

Writing: Today we began to learn about the different types of pronouns and took notes on them. I will be adding lessons to MobyMax today which are still due March 15th. Personal narratives were also due today and are subject to a 10% loss of points if not printed and turned in to me today.

Reading: We had a small group and whole class discussion about “The Jacket” by Gary Soto.  We also practiced identifying figurative language in a short story to review for tomorrow’s quiz.
Writing:  We practiced with Adverbs. We also continued the Peer Editing process. We will finish Peer Editing tomorrow and provide our partners with our feedback.

Today we reread “The Jacket” by Gary Soto with the purpose of analyzing the figurative language used. We focused mainly on similes, metaphors, and personification. 
We also began taking notes on Adverbs and did some practice with them. 
Personal Narrative Rough Drafts were due today. We began the Peer Editing process at the end of class, which will continue through Thursday.

Today we took a Mid-Year CER writing prompt assessment. This is used to assess where students are in terms of the writing process and skills.  Students that have been absent and needed to finish the NWEA did so in class during this time and will complete the writing prompt when they are finished. 
When students finished, they were asked to read “The Jacket” by Gary Soto so we can begin an activity with it tomorrow. If you didn’t read it, it is to be read at home. You can read the story HERE.
