Inquiry Project–Hurricanes!

Hello boys and girls!! We have been talking a lot about weather lately, haven’t we? You learned how to find the weather conditions, how to track the weather, and you also learned about snow and tornadoes! Now, we are going to look at hurricanes. You may not know a lot about them because we don’t have them in Michigan. However, many places in the world experience them.

Also, at the beginning of The Wild Robot, we read about a hurricane! It caused Roz and the other robots to come to the island.

You will be doing some research on your own to learn more about hurricanes. The video below will show you how to access many different resources on the mel.org website. The links to those resources are below. A note-taking guide is also below for you to use as you are learning and researching. You can choose to print it out and take notes as you are learning, or you can just write down your notes on a piece of paper.

As you are taking notes, think about these questions: How does a hurricane form? Where do hurricanes form? Why are hurricanes so dangerous? What are things that people need to do to stay safe in a hurricane?

http://getepic.com–if you do not have a class code from your teacher already, comment or send me an email and I will put you on my account.

http://www.mel.org–Click eResources, click K-12 Schools, click K-5. Scroll down to see and click on “Explora for Elementary Schools,” “World Book Kids,” and “Britannica School Elementary.”

http://libraries.resa.net–click Dearborn Public Schools, then click the name of your school. You can search your school’s catalog for books about hurricanes.

Sora–if you forgot how to access Sora, see the video below from my last post. There are not a ton of hurricane resources on there, but you may find something interesting!

https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/hurricane–National Geographic Kids has some great information about hurricanes!

When you are finished researching and are experts on hurricanes, take the facts that you wrote down and create a paragraph (or two) that tells me all about hurricanes. I cannot wait to read your information!

Promoting Literacy and Reading during Remote Learning!

Welcome! This post contains some excellent resources for you to use so you can continue to read every day! I know how difficult it can be to get new books while we are learning online, but there are great options available to you on the Internet! You will learn how to search our school’s library catalog and place books on hold, how to use a new tool called Sora, a great way to get more time on Epic!, and how to access a list of new, diverse books about lots of different people and experiences! Happy Reading!

You can comment on this blog post or email me at cwiekr@dearbornschools.org with any questions you may have 🙂
