Math with Flashcards

Hello!!

Today’s post is about working on math skills with flashcards. Flashcards and manipulatives (physical tools of teaching, engaging students visually and physically with objects) are used daily in our math centers. *If you need help on how to make easy flashcards, please see my Letters and Sounds post on March 18th.* For our math centers, we always have three groups: a group working on number identification and counting, a group working on IEP goal work, and a group working on our monthly theme. For the month of March, we are learning about shapes.

Ways to use flashcards:

  • Trace the number
  • Sort
  • Memory/concentration game
  • Spread the cards all over the floor.  Call out a number and have your child find it
  • Work together to arrange the cards in numerical order
  • Work on identifying numbers and shapes
  • Play “What’s Missing?” (line up the flashcards and take one card away, have your child figure out which item is missing)
  • Give your child a shape card and have them look around the house or outside to find an object that matches the shape

Example of flashcards we use in the classroom:

Give your child a number card and have them find and match the correct number of dots. For students who have mastered counting and identiying their numbers up to 30, take two different dot or number cards and turn it into a simple addition problem.

Helps with number identification and counting.

For kids who are working on addition skills:

Extra visual support:

Lastly, flashcards can be used to identify shapes. The shapes we have been going over in class are: squares, rectangles, circles, ovals, triangles, diamonds, stars, moons, and hearts.

Here are some videos we have used in the classroom for references:
