Last week, many of you saw a Reading Response Notebook in your studen’t book bag. This notebook will stay in there and travel to and from school daily with your child’s books. Inside of it you will find small tasks to be completed that relate to the book we worked on that day in our strategy groups.
I will always put a “due date” along with the assignment directions so you know when I will be checking for completion. Please note that there will not be a task with every book I give them, but please check it daily to see if your child does have an assignment. Currently, the tasks are very simple and should be completed independently by your child. As time goes on and we advance in our reading, the tasks will be more involved and some adult support may be needed.
These reponse assignments are meant to increase comprehension of a book and make connections (text to self, text to text and text to world). Reading is so much more than decoding and just reading words. We want students to understand what they are reading and become aware of the author’s purpose (what is the author trying to tell us?). This is just one way to help our students become great readers!
Thank you for all of your help and support in teaching a love for reading to your child 🙂
